Nice to see the Shirk family generosity again and the extension of the Shirk.  Seems to be mostly for new locker rooms and expanded area for fitness, lifting, workout rooms etc., for athletes and the broader student population and community.  Parking will be moved further East I would bet.

Hope all goes well for all the chatsters -- I'm on an extended road trip, just in Boston for my son's law school graduation, now in NW New Jersey in the beautiful Delaware River water gap area.  This is one complicated, beautiful, and interesting country.

Happy June to all . . . 25th anniversary of the June 4th Beijing Massacre in a few days.  Remembering all those lost and all the families of the lost still suffering.

Whitewater won the 2013/14 athletic Triple Crown in men's sports, winning the D3 National Championships in football, basketball and baseball. And now the WIAC is now in the newly named Central Region along with the CCIW. One subdued complaint: How many D3 private colleges have a separate arena for volleyball like Whitewater does? Kind of hard to compete against that, especially considering the WIAC schools offer what amounts to in-state tuition to IL high school students. But I will give Whitewater coaches credit for recognizing athletic talent, developing it and winning. Winning D3 championships is incredibly difficult, the understatement of the year on this site.

Pat Coleman

I would consider Hope to have a separate volleyball arena.

In the absence both of sports such as rowing, ice hockey, field hockey, squash, and skiing, and single school multiple championships in the "major" sports, no CCIW teams are going to seriously challenge for a top finish in the annual Learfield Directors' Cup standings.
However, among CCIW teams, North Central finished highest in the final 2013-2014 Cup standings, coming in 21st from among over 400 NCAA Division III schools.
Other conference teams finishing in the top 50 included IWU in 26th, Carthage tied for 47th, and Wheaton in 49th.

SUMMER "LEAGUE"

For several years, up to 6 CCIW teams have participated in the Deerfield/Joy Of The Game Summer League. Wheaton and Millikin have always been the exceptions, and a couple of teams were absent a year or two intermittently.
However, my understanding is that this summer North Central, Elmhurst, and Wesleyan have "dropped out" of the Deerfield league in favor of a less structured summer format, more closely resembling an open gym/scrimmage concept. They have been joined by teams from Aurora U, Benedictine, and Judson Univ.
Games are played round-robin style beginning at 5:45 at either Benedictine or Elmhurst on Wednesdays, and also sometimes one other day during the week which I believe is usually (maybe always?) Monday.
There are no referees. As in open gym, its call your own fouls. There are also no fees thus saving the teams/kids $900.00, and no drives as long as the sometimes 90 minute drive (from Naperville) to Deerfield depending on game time.

From what I heard from several teams/players, parents, and coaches over the last couple years, I believe the major factors leading to the formation of this arrangement were the $900.00 team fees, and especially, the level of officiating which has existed in Deerfield for the last 2-3 years. The Joy Of The Game facility which is very nice indeed, was sold about 3 years ago. The first thing I was told that the new owners did was raise the team fee from $800.00 to $900.00. Additionally, the refs, which were never that good under the original owners, gradually got even worse over the last couple years. The incompetence was said to reach its zenith last summer when the refs would often stand at midcourt and take only 2 or 3 steps to the right or left depending on which end of the court play was in. Many correct calls were impossible due to this lackadaisical positioning, and consistency was totally absent as a player could basically be tackled on one play with no foul called, and the next play could find an infraction being whistled for nothing more than a defender being within a foot of his man.

Not a very strong IWU schedule upcoming ?  . . . or it just me?  Thanks for posting all the schedules, now available.

Hope all the CCIW friends and chatsters are having a great summer.  Loved the Spurs winning it all . . . as I normally cheer for the old guys.  Also good to see team play defeat superstars.  Gotta love that US win over Ghana yesterday.  All good.

Looking forward to the fall on the IWU campus -- football and early basketball.

Warm greetings to all the CCIW chatsters, from sunny warm Asheville, NC.  The bluehighways here are gorgeous, the Smokies truly smoky and the bluehighways truly blue.  Such a gorgeous area.  Heading truly south soon, to Scottsboro, on to AL. GA. and Florida, to see my middle bro.  Alabama later in the month for a China speaking event.

Be well, all.

IWU70 -- on the road

Augie's 5 member class is puzzling as it includes 4 PGs. I know Augie guard play is a weak point but 4 PGS and no quality big men? A good thing Augie has a lot of returning talent, because this class at first blush is not impressive.

"Puzzling" is a word that is likewise applicable to this year's group of recruits at Elmhurst for exactly the same reason. Here (compliments of TQ) are EC's lists of recruits and returning players.

Elmhurst recruits

* Brandon Auker, 6-0 PG (Evansville Memorial H.S.) - 12.2 ppg, 4.5 apg, 2.4 rpg
* Matt Brachman, 6-3 SF/PF (Montini Catholic H.S.) - 17.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg
* Matt McLaughlin, 6-2 G (Xaver H.S., IA/D1 Drake U)
* Morton Mueller, 6-9 F/C (Cologne, Germany)
* Chris Parrilli, 6-2 SG (Geneva H.S.) - 11.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.1 apg
* Michael Plunk, 6-4 PG/SG (Blue Ridge H.S.) - 18.7 ppg, 5.0 apg
* Brandon Schwebke, 6-3 F (Belvedere North H.S./Rock Valley JC) - 16.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg at Rock Valley JC in 2012-13

Elmhurst (14-11, 6-8) returning players

G - Pat Coleman, 6-2/190 So Starter who averaged 21 minutes a game.
G - Kyle Wuest, 6-1/180 So Starter who averaged 27 minutes a game.
G - Taylor Baxter, 6-5/205 Sr
F - Nick Sanford, 6-5/210 Sr    3rd Team All-CCIW
F - Will Nixon, 6-7/210 So

F - Erick Crittenden, 6-7/200 So
G - Bryant Ackerman, 6-2/195 So Averaged 20 minutes a game in 25 games.
F - Kenny Payonk, 6-6/220 So
G - Nathan Rogers, 6-1/185 Fr Averaged 13 minutes a game in 20 games.
G - Peyton Wyatt, 5-11/195 So Averaged 7 minutes a game in 19 games.
G-Harlan Tucker, 6-2/190 Fr Averaged 15 minutes a game in 17 games. (Not originally listed. Returning?)

The Bluejay starting guards in 2013-14, Coleman and Weust, were both only sophomores. Soph Ackerman was a virtual starter, playing only 1 minute less than Coleman. Wyatt, another soph, averaged 7 minutes a game and freshmen Rogers and Tucker averaged 13 and 15 minutes respectively.

Given the number of players returning at the guard position for Elmhurst, the number of minutes they played, AND their relative youth, the prospect of much, if any, playing time for this year's recruits who play the guard position appears slim. Furthermore, 4 guards who played regularly, will be around for not just one more year, but 2 more years. This doesn't even include the 2 freshmen who saw PT this season.
Additionally, the 2 forward recruits are both listed as being 6'3" which is rather undersized for a forward in the CCIW. It may be that their best spot in college might be at a wing as opposed to a true forward position, or even at a 2 guard.

Elmhurst lost F Nick Sanford, a 3rd team all-conference player who played at a first team or minimally second team level, and was 3rd team only because of EC's 6th place conference finish. Rather than a large collection of guards, none of who might play much for at least 2 years, it seems EC's most pressing need this year was finding a capable replacement for Mr. Sanford.

As reported by sac, Elmhurst's latest recruit is James Pupillo, a 5'9" guard from Addison Trail. James is a good player and, in fact, was the best player on a pretty bad team. He is both a capable scorer and distributor and has the potential to be a good D3 level player. However, as delineated above, EC's starting guards this year were both only sophs, and 2 other sophs and 2 freshmen were in the regular rotation. Thats 6 guards that played last season. When you add in the 4 incoming guards that committed earlier, you're looking at looking at a virtual army of guards. As such, EC seems like a strange place for Pupillo to have finally landed. Big picture wise his addition does nothing to address EC's most pressing need which remains finding a capable replacement for the departed, multitalented, Nick Sanford.

And One  any detail on the Summer League, or would we need to call Elmhurst and Benedictine for specifics?
