IWU 89
Illinois College 64

http://illinoiscollegeathletics.com/boxscore.aspx?path=mbball&id=1125

* Dylan Overstreet: 11 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists
* Bryce Dolan: 20 points (6-10 3-point)
* Trevor Seibring: 17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists
* Joel Pennington: 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists

Granted Illinois College it not a CCIW contender-caliber team, but IWU played great today.  The Titans had 21 assists to just 7 turnovers, out-rebounded IC 42-29, held IC to 37% FG, got 34 bench points, and made 19 of 22 FTs.

The Titans moved the ball really well today, always seeming to make that extra pass.  IWU played 10 guys in the 1st half, and all 10 scored.  The encouraging thing is how good the new players in the rotation looked.  After Ryan Coyle scored 24 last night, today Trevor Seibring, Joel Pennington, Andy Stempel, and Alec Bausch really looked good.  I'm a big fan of 6-8 Trevor Seibring, who has zero flashiness to his game but is just very fundamentally solid.  I also like what 6-6 Alec Bausch brings to the floor - high energy guy who can rebound and can score a little bit.

It seems like the Titans are starting to settle into their 2014-15 rotation and that individuals are starting to get comfortable with roles.  I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out the rest of the non-conference.

I watched most of the Wheaton/Wash U game - it was my first good look at both teams.

Wheaton has an extremely talented and skilled group of perimeter players.  The Thunder have a huge void though in that they just don't have anything remotely resembling a low post, back-to-the-basket presence.  The past couple years Wheaton has been thin in the low post, but they had Nate Haynes, who was really good on both ends of the floor.  (And who managed to keep himself out of foul trouble, and healthy, and on the floor.)  This year Wheaton is basically playing a collection of small forwards at the 4 and 5 spots.  For 40 minutes there is really never a possession where Wheaton gets the ball to a guy on the blocks who has to be doubled, or is a real threat to make a strong move and score.  (Michael Berg posts up some, and certainly can score down low, but it's just not his thing at all.)

The last few minutes of the game tonight really exposed Wheaton's lack of low post presence.  When the Thunder needed baskets, they took jumpshots.  That's a tough way to try to win games against good defensive teams.

Wheaton will win a lot of games this year because of how skilled they are, how well they'll shoot it, how well they move offensively, and use dribble drive to get to the basket.  As always, Wheaton will be a hard team to beat...especially at King Arena.  But I just think Wheaton's lack of any kind of back-to the basket low post presence is going to hurt them badly over the course of 14 CCIW games.

I'm interested to see how Wheaton defends Benedictine's size down low on 11/25, and then Chicago's on 12/3 -- Chicago's Nate Brooks is a load.  Both teams have bigger low post, back-to-the-basket threats than Wash U does.  (Wash U, in a lot of ways, is very similar to Wheaton -- the Bears really don't have anything close to a true 5 either.  But in Nick Burt they have more than the Thunder in that department.)

IWU"s depth wore down IC. Just a solid all-around game by Titans. Overstreet is a great D3 athlete. Dolan proved that his 97 3s in his senior HS season was a precursor of his college shooting excellence. He hardly ever rattles in a 3 pointer, 90% are NBN.  ;D Nice to see Seibring, Bausch, Pennington and Brady Rose have productive games. MSOE next at Shirk on Tuesday and they were picked second in the NACC.

Even more than the lack of a post-up game, I think that Wheaton is going to suffer from the lack of strong rebounding. I noted the other day that the Sonic Atmospheric Disturbance got hammered on the boards by Defiance, giving up 14 more caroms than they collected. Yesterday they lost the rebounding battle by 7, as both of Wash U's bigs collected 11 boards apiece.

The Cardinals starting front court tallied 51 points.

After leading the Cards with 25 points the previous evening, Charlie Rosenberg was again the top scorer with 23 last night. To top things off, Sir Charles dished out a game high 5 assists, and took home the Naperville Marriott Tip-Off Tourney MVP Award.

Jack Burchett registered his second double-double in 2 nights, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. The Chairman Of The Boards is averaging 12.5 rpg.

Kevin Honn played a great all-around game scoring 18 points on 5 of 7 shooting, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, and 4 of 5 from the line. Additionally, Kevin grabbed 6 rebounds, handed out 3 assists, and made 2 steals.

Freshman Erwin Henry played a strong supporting role with 3 of 4 from the field, and 4 of 5 from the line for 10 points in 18 minutes of play.

Guard Jayme Moten was the fifth Cardinal to reach double figures, banking 10 points (2 threes). Jayme also handed out 4 assists without committing any TOs.

NCC hosts western neighbor Aurora, picked to win the NACC, in non-conference action on Tuesday night. The annual tussle begins at 7:00.

Um, Mark, KC was a blast, but we never had much success there! :P  Perhaps it would be better in Salem ('97 MBB national title), Appleton ('10 baseball national title), or wherever the finals were held for the women's indoor and outdoor national titles for track and field (forget the years).

(Any national titles I've forgotten?)
