Wonder why Miller didn't take Young off of Hill until the final few minutes of overtime.  Not taking anything away from Hill, he was special last night and made huge plays , but UWW didn't make it tough for him to catch the ball and there was no trapping on ball screens.  Hill hit a long 3 to tie the game I believe at 92, and Patten, guarding the screener, was attached to his man.  Can't figure that out.

Havej---

I believe the answer to your question is speed. Young is the quickest Warhawk, and Miller thought he would have the best chance to stay with Hill when he ran around the screens and/or use his combination of quickness and strength to fight through the screens and stay with Hill.
Miller likely felt the other defensive possibility of putting a bigger/taller defender on him to present more of an obstacle to shoot over, had a less likely probability of success as Hill would be quicker than a bigger defender, and could both get to his desired spot more easily and/or create his shot off the dribble more easily against a taller/bigger but slower defender.
But with Hill being "in the zone" last night, it didn't appear any form of defensive strategy would have been effective.

Yes, but the point about trapping brought up by havej and Gordon remains pertinent. The example cited by havej in which Ron Patten stayed with his man on the perimeter instead of helping to trap Hill is just one instance. If I was a reporter talking to Pat Miller after the game last night, I, too, would've asked him why he didn't try to trap Hill in order to take the ball out of his hands. I would've been a lot more comfortable giving the Augie big setting the screen an open shot from the perimeter than I would've been with Hill running loose with the ball like a sawed-off Pete Maravich.

Agree.  When one player is lighting you up, and the other 4 players on the floor look uncomfortable to shoot (and aren't great scorers in general), you have to find a way to take the ball out of that player's hands somehow.  I was really surprised at how Whitewater chose to defend Hill towards the end of that game.

Unrelated, but I thought UWW got a really bad shot at the end of regulation - the 3-pointer by Q Young.  Young has the handles and quickness to get into the lane and get a great look (or get fouled) whenever he wants.  I couldn't believe he didn't get into the lane.

I only saw a portion of the video broadcast but I was impressed with the size of the crowd.  The place looked packed.

The capacity at Augustana is listed as 3,200 on D3Hoops. Last night's attendance was 2603. From the video (which I also lost with AC ahead 74-71), it looked like fans were shoe-horned in there. It's pretty hard to believe the Carver Center could accommodate another 600 bodies. Wishful thinking by Augie?
Well, somebody is fudging somewhere.  As Greg noted above, Carver's capacity was reduced when it was renovated in 2008 --- from 3200 to 1900 per Augustana's website facility description of Carver.  Hum, maybe the over capacity was put in the pool area seats which holds approximately 800 per the website!  But I could just be "all wet" :(

Had Hill not made that really tough shot with 0:21 left in regulation to send the game to OT, we'd be talking about the stretch where Augustana went from up 11 at 7:40 to down 3 at 2:33.  It was a 17-3 UW-Whitewater run during which the Vikings really couldn't score at all.

The odd thing is that he didn't even try. He had plenty of time. He just stood there dribbling in place at the top of the key while staring at Hill crouched down in front of him in a defensive stance, and then he let fly with the trey attempt. Was this a case of "that kid is gonna strip me if I try to drive on him"? Only Quardell Young knows for sure, and my guess is that he ain't saying. ;)

Trivia Break....I see  Grey Giovanine is still the coach at Augustana. I'm a LINFIELD guy.

In 1971, two brothers played basketball at LINFIELD, Pat and Mike Smithey. Their younger days were spent in east Texas. (Mike's Little League team won the World Series. His 1971 LINFIELD baseball team would win the NAIA) ANYWAY, one day in spring, childhood acquaintance, David Salinas, showed up on the LINFIELD campus and looked up Mike. Mike had a wry sense of humor and introduced Salinas around campus. Because he was a  member of Theta Chi at Stephen F. Austin the Thetas made Salinas welcome for awhile.  I should have known something was amiss when Pat greeted Chicky Baby with, "What the (bleep) are you doing here?"

On my way from McMinnville to Orlando in August 1971 I looked up Salinas at Stephen F. Austin and stayed at the Theta Chi house overnight.

In 1974 Chicky Baby showed up at my house in San Juan Capistrano,CA. My parents made him welcome. He spent a week and then produced a sob story about wanting to get back to Texas to see his mother. My parents gave him airfare and I took him to the airport. The same afternoon I got a call from a friend in McMinnville asking if I'd heard from Chicky. Chicky had gone back to LINFIELD even though we were all gone. Salinas had ripped some Theta Chis off for $1400.

Thankfully,no word from Chicky Baby until an episode of American Greed.  I post here because Giovanine was amuch bigger loser than us LINFIELD guys.

I'm guessing it had nothing to do with lack of confidence. If he can run the length of the floor in 3 seconds in the championship game, I'm sure he has the confidence to do whatever he wants. But like you said, not sure about the shot selection at the end there.

Good luck to North Central for their big game vs. Dickinson.  Should be a good one.  I think NCC wins this one.  We'll see.

IWU vs. Wash U Saturday.  The team that limits TOs, rebounds the ball better, wins the game.  Good game to have Marietti back.

As Pat & Greg have indicated, this subject was previously discussed here a couple years ago in a fairly detailed manner. Unfortunately, I guess that makes your information old  news. It was reported at the time that Grey Giovanine lost $533,000 in the scam.
And yes, Giovanine, the most thought provoking and posted about coach in the CCIW by a wide margin, certainly IS still the head man at Augustana.  ::)

Recognizing that this was a minor aside in your breaking news  ::), but in the interest of accuracy, Mike Smithey's team *reached* the Little League World Series.  They didn't win it.
