Over this past weekend, the North Central Cardinals wrapped up the non-conference portion of their 2014-2015 season with victories over Olivet (MI) by a score of 76-54, and Albion (MI) by a final count of 75-69 at the Mt. Union (OH) tournament. The two wins pushed their record to a lofty 10-1 with their only loss to current #5 Dickinson, an Elite Eight member last year, by 7 points on the road in PA.

Against Olivet, Charlie Rosenberg led the way with a 22 point, 7 rebound performance. To top things off, Charlie added a team season high 9 assists. Jack Burchett also turned in a standout job with 19 points and a game high 8 rebounds.
The Adrian contest saw Jayme Moten pour in a game high 27 points, the highest total for any NCC player so far this season. He was ably supported by a 14 point, 6 rebound game by Kevin Honn who, with the game tied at 50, hit three pointers on 2 consecutive possessions to give the Cardinals a lead which was never surpassed. Freshman Erwin Henry also tossed in an important 10 points. Leading scorer Charlie Rosenberg, saddled with foul trouble, spent most of the opening half on the bench. While he finished with only 6 points, he was able to collect a game high 8 boards. The Cards sealed the win by converting on 13 of 16 from the line over the last 4:07, including 9 of 10 in the last 2 minutes.

Augie 71 Coe 66 Final. 21 for Hunter Hill and 20 for Ben Ryan. All in all a pretty uninspired effort by Augie. Sorry to say, but in way are they the #2 team in D III. Probably not even the #2 team in the CCIW.

Augiefan-

I assume you left out the word "no" in the next to last sentence of your post.
However, what do you feel is the problem(s)?
How much does the loss of Schlitter hurt?

The western Vikings have only one loss which as to a team that has won twice as many as they have lost. With everyone back from last year, and with another year of experience added in, they still certainly look, on paper anyway, as the team to beat in the CCIW. Add in the fact that they are directed by a coach who, despite his wild-man on court antics and persona, and generally being loathed by the majority of opposing fans, certainly is a top notch field commander. I think a lot of teams out there would love to have Augie's "problems."

North Park used a 14-0 run over a four-minute span of the second half to break open what had been a 65-65 tie at the 8:45 mark and cruise to victory. Juwan Henry scored a season-high 27 points and added five rebounds, while Colin Lake set a new career high with 23 points and also pilfered three steals. Along with T.J. Cobbs (13 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls), they made up for the absence of Jordan Robinson, while Michael Hutchinson led the way with seven rebounds, as once again NPU outboarded a much bigger team.

Elmhurst beat Kalamazoo at Faganel Hall, 90-72. Nathan Rogers led the way for the 'jays with 16, while Pat "the Guru" Coleman and Kyle Wuest had 13 apiece and Brandon Schwebke chipped in 10.

Erik Crittenden returned from his arm injury and saw a dozen minutes of action for EC tonight. I've been told that Jalen Loving tore his MCL before Christmas and is done for the year, though.

Titans down 10 at the half in California.  Playing pretty poorly so far.  CLU is quick and hungry so far.  Overstreet got dinged, not sure the nature of the injury, but sat out the last 2-3 minutes of the first half.  Titans better get with it or this one could be trouble.

Good video feed from CLU.

Cal Lutheran wins 67-61.  Titans had shutdown CL 3 times in a row down the stretch with around 2 minutes left, but did not score in response to any of those chances.  CL made just enough FTs to stay a step ahead to the end.

Titans can't come back, go down to CLU 67-61.  Basically got outplayed and outcoached, done in by CLU's quickness, some long treys at the end of shot clocks.  Titans not playing all that well, but I give credit to CLU with tenacity, good coaching and time management, good offensive schemes.  Made FTs when IWU had to foul down the stretch.  Shows some vulnerabilities on the part of the Titans to very quick guards.  Not a good outing for IWU.

Overstreet OK, played the second half.  IWU had too many TOs, did not dominate on the boards as perhaps they should have.

Titans finish the pre-conference phase at 8-3.  Opportunities lost vs. BU and CLU.

CCIW race, here we come.  Looks to me like NCC may be the team to beat -- AC and IWU, perhaps Wheaton chasing, with others having to prove themselves, but surely may -- EC and NPU.  CC and MU trailing behind.  Let the race begin.

Happy New Year all -- already New Year's eve here on the Far Side.

Coltrane Powdrill is the coolest basketball name I've heard in years.

The CCIW is now 62-22 (.738) in non-con play, with four games remaining. Carthage plays at UW-Oshkosh tomorrow afternoon, Millikin hosts UW-LaCrosse on New Year's Day, and the other two games will take place in the midst of the CCIW season.

* Ryan Coyle: 18 pts, 9 reb

* Coltrane Powdrill: 19 pts, 5 reb
* Arik Smith: 18 pts, 4 reb

The Titans were outplayed by CLU in just about every facet of the game.  CLU looked like a good team with a matchup nightmare perimeter player (Arik Smith) and a really active and talented forward in Coltrane Powdrill.  IWU certainly didn't play well, but a lot of that is because CLU played really well on both ends of the floor.

IWU (8-3) opens CCIW play Saturday at NCC.

Outcoached? How so?
I see the coach's freshman son got 14 minutes of PT. Has he surpassed all the other non starting guards besides Stempel and Pennington? Jordan Nelson hit 3 threes just last night. Where was he tonight? Is he injured?

When the Green Team arrives in Naperville Saturday night, the NCC Cardinals will have a "matchup nightmare perimeter player." and TWO "really active and talented" forwards waiting for them. Ron Rose underestimated the talent of one of those forwards previously. Will he make the same mistake again?

Despite the talent that awaits them, the Greenies are a talented bunch who have the ability to counter what the Cardinals may throw at them. Should the home team display an air of overconfidence, they are likely to have their lunch handed to them. Much like the North in the Civil War, the southern visitors will have a numbers advantage in the form of superior depth. It should be a battle royal.

AO, on the coaching, use of time outs, adjustments in the game, no answer for CLU quickness on the perimeter, and poor rotation IMHO.  Yes, Brady Rose played more, Nelson not a minute.  Marietti still finding his game, his fitness.  Coyle had a good game, but Overstreet was spotty, with 6 TOs.  Give CLU players and coach their due, they were more comfortable, quicker, and got the Titans to play the game in their way, at their pace, in their style.  Titans couldn't overcome the very poor first half, only scoring 24.  When the Titans only score in the 50s or low 60s, bad things happen, usually a loss.

Yes, first game with NCC should be a real beauty.  I'm sure both teams will be up for it.  Titans need to steal a few away games against top contenders.  Here's an initial chance.

Here we go . . . a great CCIW race in the offing.
