Elmhurst 75
North Park 50

Juwan Henry: 19 pts, 7 rebs, 5 blks, 5 stls
Jordan Robinson: 14 pts

Kyle Wuest: 14 pts, 12 rebs
Will Nixon: 14 pts, 9 rebs
Erik Crittenden: 13 pts, 10 rebs

The Vikings got crushed on the boards tonight, 59-22. That, combined with a horrific 26% FG percentage (NPU was 3-26 from downtown), explains the rout. The Bluejays played a very solid game in the halfcourt.

NPU did force 25 EC turnovers, 13 of them the result of steals. But if you can't make a basket, it all goes for naught.

Love it, what a great game at Carver.  Two very high quality teams punching it out, point for point.

IWU wins in a thriller, 89-84.  Who thought IWU could score 89 vs. the Augie D?  Not me.

Sodemann 20
Nelson 19
Marietta a big big game 16
Overstreet 12
Coyle 8

Rebounds about even.   The IWU bigs played their hearts out and held up pretty well against the #1 team in D3.

This game should get the Titans back into the Top 25 I would think.

My hat is off to both teams, both coaches -- a truly wonderful performance by both, great to watch.

Go TITANS -- keep it rolling.

(IWU women won tonight too, beating Augie at The Shirk).

Augie a very good team, with four players in double figures.

Mr. Ypsi

Marietta did not miss a shot the entire game - 6 for 6 from the field, 4 for 4 from the stripe! :o

And Sodemann was a perfect 4 for 4 from downtown (and that may have been downtown Davenport)! ;D

I was the slate maker for the national pickems this week.  I certainly considered this game on my list but decided against it for fear that ALL picks (probably even my own) would have been for Augie.  IWU @ Elmhurst DID make the slate.

There were 4 NBA scouts there to see the IWU vs. Augie game.   :o. I met them at the truck stop on the way back to Chicago.   Could not get them to comment details but I would guess Nelson is coveted for trick shooting halftime shows in his future.

Truly enjoyed the IWU-Augie game.  Very high-quality play, great coaching on both sides.

Hill and Ryan had 19 each for Augie.  IWU bigs came up big enough, especially Marietti tonight.  Neither team turned it over much, and the rebound battle went very slightly to AC.  As I said some weeks back about Pat Sodemann's slow start, I thought he would find his stroke and his fitness and make a significant contribution at some point latter in the season.  Tonight, Voila!  All my keys turned out pretty well, as Hunter Hill did not "go off," still having a good game at 19, slightly above his average, with 8 of his points coming from FTs.  To me, the difference was Overstreet, able to go pretty much where he wanted and not turn the ball over much, made some good passes and assists, scored his average against very tough on-ball pressure and defense.  Of course, the Titans shooting such a high percentage from 3 and overall doesn't hurt a bit.

Great game, Titans -- now keep this level, this intensity going for EC away.  Gotta finish out the first CCIW cycle strongly.  No let down.

Rounding out tonight's action:

North Central 87, Carthage 82 from beyond the Cheddar curtain.

Millikin 86, Wheaton 46 at the Griz.  Easily the most head-scratching result of the year so far.

-----

Moten with 20, Rosenberg with 19, and Birchett/Honn with 16 each for the Cards in Kenosha.  North Central shot 64% from the field, 62 from beyond the arc, and, weirdly, 55% from the line.  Moten was 5 of 5 from distance, 7 of 7 from the field... and 1 of 3 from the field.  Birchett was 8 of 10 from the field and oh-fer-three from the line.

North Central led by 13 with three-and-change to go before the Red. Men. made it close at the end.

Overstreet took over the game with about 7 minutes left. IWU in control all the way with the exception of the lone Augie lead of 64-63 with 9:47 left. Nelson and Sodemann hit huge 3s after that to increase IWU's lead to 8 with 3:08 left. Giovanine stuck on 299 wins. As a side note, Augie had 8 players on JV team that won by 40 including one senior, two juniors (including Griffin Pils who starred in both the JV and varsity games), and one sophomore. Those 4 JV players earned 7 varsity letters prior to the current season. It's an even trade. Augie and IWU each won a game tonight. ;D

iwu70

Why are those guys with varsity letters playing JV ball?  Strange.

What a truly strange result from the Griz.

New #1?  St. Thomas or Wash U?

Titans likely back in the top 25, if they continue on and beat EC this weekend.  Should be another very good game on Saturday.

* Pat Sodemann: 20 points (4-4 3-point)
* Jordan Nelson: 19 points (3-5 3-point)
* Mike Marietti: 16 points, 4 reb (6-6 FG)
* Dylan Overstreet: 12 points 4 assists

* Ben Ryan: 19 points, 6 rebounds
* Hunter Hill: 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists
* Griffin Pils: 15 points

On the road at a great team, it'd be hard for a team to play any better than IWU did last night for 40 minutes.  The Titans played poised and smart in controlling this game almost the entire way.  It's clear they had a great gameplan going in and executed the heck out of it.

IWU has the luxury of 3 really good starting senior guards -- Dylan Oversteet, Jordan Nelson, and Pat Sodemann.  Each was very good in Rock Island, with Pat Sodemann getting the Titans started, Jordan Nelson hitting a number of shots, and Dylan Overstreet playing great down the stretch to close out the game.

6-8 Mike Marietti had a huge game as well, making a number of tough baskets for IWU.

Last night was the third time in the last 5 years a Ron Rose team has beaten #1 on the road:
* March 2010, @ Wash U
* March 2012, @ Hope
* Jan 2015, @ Augustana

IWU looked liked the better team last night - I just don't see much separation in overall talent between IWU and Augie.  If the Titans play like that the rest of the way, they have a chance to win the league.

What a huge win for Ron Rose and the Titans.

IWU's 4 posts last night combined:

31 points, 12-17 FG (.706), 17 rebounds.

I take my hat off to the IWU bigs.   They really did the job last night against very tough opposition.

EC poses another big challenge on Saturday.

Congratulations to the Titans on a big win which gives them the midway leg up in the conference now.  Augie played a very good game but IWU played practically a flawless game with a terrific shooting night, home or road.  I'm wondering if there was any concerted effort on Rose's part to shoot less 3s (only 13 attempts- well below their average).  If so, I like that decision.

All I can say is wow!  Amazingly weak showing by the Thunder coming off of their effort at Augie.

Millikin lit it up early from 3 against the zone, and Wheaton just puked on offense through the first half.

Second half was no better, and Schauer gives up and clears the bench early.

Credit to Millikin on a blowout win.

Not even sure what to say to that result except WCs injury situation, lack of inside size, heavy starter minutes, playing freshman, etc does not explain this. 15 first half turnovers only partially does.  But even under all those conditions they are not 40 points worse than the Big Blue.  I'll leave it there

A few IWU/Augie notes: 1) IWU couldn't play better with 58.3% FG shooting and very consistent with 57.7% in 1st half and 59.1% in 2nd. And only 9 TOs and 18 As. One of the best games any IWU team has played in Rock Island. 2) Augustana played extremely well also with 50% FG% and only 7 TOs and 12As. Just a great D3 game as both coaches had teams well prepared and focused. 3) Attendance was less than I expected at 1,571, more than a thousand less than the Augie/Whitewater game in December.   4) I guess Grey thinks senior and co-captain Jurgutis should get more PT than sophomore Griffin Pils. He knows his players. Jurgutis in 22 min. had 6 points on 2/6 FG including 1/3 on 3s while Pils in only 12 min. had 15 points on 6/7 FG including 2/3 on 3s. Pils could not miss in the JV game and must have played at least 25 JV minutes. He kept Augie in the varsity game in the 2nd half. 5) Augustana has some serious talent other than the starters. I think 5'11" freshman guard Joe Ranallo, 6'5" soph. guard Jacob Johnston and soph. 6'7" Michael Hoekstra have a chance to be impact CCIW players.  6) Augie still has road games at Wheaton, IWU, Elmhurst, Millikin & NPU. 7) IWU's remaining road games are  Elmhurst (Sat.), Carthage, Millikin & NPU.
