If NPU makes the CCIW tourney, they are going to really earn it.  They have the toughest schedule for the final three games of the CCIW season.

That's one way of looking at it. The other way of looking at it is that the Vikings can do themselves the most good of any team in the league by dint of their own efforts.

The game at the Shirk last night was a good old fashioned dismantling.  I picked up the feed with four and change left in the first half, and left it at halftime.  When Overstreet hit the running three from somewhere around Owensboro as time expired, it was clear that things weren't going to go the Cards' way last night.

Tough opponent and tough place to play, even if the Cards had been at full strength.  But if you had said a week ago that North Central would split road games at Augie and Bloomington and still control their own fate, most of Cardinal Nation would have taken it.

5 of the top 19 D3 Hoops teams lost tonight and Wash. U. was pounded last night (not midnight yet in IL) by Carnegie Mellon, a team now only 2-6 in UAA. Wash. U. now 15-4 and has to play at Case Western Reserve tomorrow, a team that beat the Bears in St. Louis on Feb. 1.

Not that it matters, but it may be a bit much to suggest that Carnegie Mellon pounded Washington University.  The Tartans lead by 10 with a few minutes.

Washington does lead Case Western Reserve at the half, playing much like they did when the, uh, er pounded Illinois Wesleyan.

The Bears may play themselves out of contention for the conference and even for an at-large bid, but it is too early to get excited either way.

Incidentally, the 2-6 Carnegie Mellon which actually only lost two games in non-conference play is pounding Chicago, 44-26 early in the second half.  You might even say impaling.

EDIT: Carnegie Mellon continues to impale the Chicago that everyone loves 71-48 with a minute left.

* Dylan Overstreet: 12 pts (2-3 3-point), 3 reb
* Andy Stempel: 11 pts (4-4 FG), 4 reb
* Jordan Nelson: 9 pts (3-6 3-point)
* Alec Bausch: 8 pts (4-5 FG), 5 reb
* Mike Marietti: 8 pts (4-6 FG), 4 reb

* Charles Rosenberg: 9 pts, 2 reb

It was nice to see another IWU game in person...great to be out of video stream land for a couple games.

IWU trailed by 1 with about 13:00 to play in the 1st half, and by halftime was up 16 and the game felt over.  The Titans were outstanding on both ends off the floor.

IWU has a truly elite group of perimeter players, led by Dylan Overstreet, Pat Sodemann, and Jordan Nelson.  But the frontcourt has really come on and is playing extremely well.  Last night, Trevor Seibring, Mike Marietti, and Alec Bausch were very good.

The Titans play incredibly unselfishly and just have a great team chemistry going - guys truly playing for each other.  This is a fun group to watch.

IWU can clinch a share of the CCIW title with a win at home Wednesday vs Augie.  Should be another physical, grind-it-out type IWU/Augie game as always.

IWU wasn't a great team earlier in the year, but they are playing like a great team now.  Things have really come together.

Sorry AO, that was pretty much a stomp'n.  Sure didn't expect that.

IWU70

You are being too kind 70. You would have been entirely correct if you had left out the "pretty much," and just stated that was a total stomp'n.

I could say the Cardinals were hurt by Jayme Moten being hurt and unable to play, and I would be 100% correct. I'd also be making an excuse because the truth is NCC could have had two Jayme Motens last night and it would't have made an ounce of difference.

Its difficult to comprehend that the team that beat #6 Augie Wed night is the same one that got off the bus last night.

44 point NCC plays 29 point Carthage at home on Wed night. On paper it would appear the Cardinals have a timely opportunity to get their nest back in order. If they want to hold off fast charging NPU, they need to take advanage of that opportunity.

WUPHF

Not to put too fine a point on it, Washington University is pounding Case Western Reserve.

LOL

I am impressed with Jordan Nelson's production.  His continued scoring makes it tough to double on Overstreet, which in turn opens up many other scoring avenues.

Actually, USee and I are probably the only real Maroons fans who ever post here, and both of our primary allegiances lie elsewhere -- his with Wheaton, mine with NPU. I won't speak for USee, but I'd say that I'm more fond of John D. Rockefeller's citadel of brainpower than in love with it.

A lot of people who post on CCIW Chat root for the Maroons, but that's because the U of C plays anywhere from two to four CCIW teams every year -- so the fortunes of the Maroons affect ours. I know that, personally, I'm more keen on seeing the Maroons succeed this year than I usually am (although I always like to see them do well) because of that overtime game that the Maroons and my Vikings played in December at Ratner.

I was speaking in general, Greg, assuming that the CCIW thread is one of the most read threads on D3boards.com

WUH: Maybe I should have used a better past tense verb than "pounded." Can I take it back and subsitute "lost?' Regarding Wash. U. Their recent play is what has been happening in the CCIW all year. Wash. U. goes on road to play Carnegie Melon and Case Western Reserve. You, as a knowledgeable Bears fan expect what? A fairly routine victory against the former and a very tough game against the latter I'm guessing.  And the exact opposite happens. Wash. U. plays a bad game Friday and loses and routs CWR, a team that on paper is better than CM. Join the unpredictable roller coaster CCIW fans have endured, enjoyed, been mystified by (take your pick) since Jan. 3. I stated before that I thought Whitewater, Augustana & Wash. U. were probably the 3 best D3 teams as of mid-December. Now I have no idea which D3 teams are the 3 best. My guess is that Whitewater is probably one of them though Badgerhawk tells us the WIAC is down this year and that Stevens Point is not that good. The way IWU has performed since the road loss to Elmhurst may even vault IWU into that conversation. But like Dennie Bridges often said, You are only as good as your next game.  And for IWU, that's Augustana at Shirk on Wednesday.

I have to admit, I have watched more CCIW conference games this season than I have in the other 9-10 years I have been following the UAA.  This has been an awesome year for sure.

As topsy-turvy as the CCIW has been this season, it's got nothing on the UAA. As of the end of today's games, six of the eight teams in that league are now within a game of first place. I know that you look down upon Chicago for playing sparsely-attended Sunday games, Lanny, but the fact of the matter is that that league's sparsely-attended Sunday games are a big part of what makes the UAA so funky and interesting. As WUH quoted Wash U coach Mark Edwards as saying, "UAA championships are won on Sundays."

Congrats to Wheaton on their 8 point win over Elmhurst last night!  They deserved it.  They got off to a 22-9 lead and the Bluejays cut it down to 4 by halftime.  Elmhurst actually grabbed a 3 point lead with about 8 minutes to go but went cold for about 3 minutes.  The Thunder made them pay.  Wheaton hit 37 of 40 from the free-throw line and held off the 'Jays for the win.  I thought the officials called everything but they were consistent.

Hats off to the Thunder!

The Elmhurst loss could really prove costly when the D3 tourney bids come out.
