He had a decent career coaching the Mavericks -- 284-189 (.600) over 17 seasons -- but he never got anywhere near the heights that he achieved at North Park. He was perennially frustrated in his attempts to win the old Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which Minnesota-Duluth and Northern State absolutely locked down during the '80s and '90s; McCarrell's teams finished 3rd in the NSIC six times and 4th four times.

Mankato was actually a member of the North Central Conference during that time.  The North Central was one of the strongest Division II conferences at that time but folded in 2008 after five of its schools moved up to Division I: Northern Colorado left in 2003, North Dakota State and South Dakota State left in 2004 and North Dakota and South Dakota left in 2008. Four of its remaining members (Augustana, Mankato, St Cloud and Minnesota-Duluth) joined the Northern Sun Conference at that time.  Ironically for Minnesota-Duluth it was a return to the Northern Sun as they left that conference to join the stronger North Central Conference just four years earlier as a replacement for North Dakota State and South Dakota State.

Gregory Sager

Yeah, you're right. I mixed up the North Central and Northern Sun conferences. I don't know why I forgot that Mankato State / Minnesota State had been in that conference, since, as you said, it was one of the best leagues in all of D2 until the D1 aspirations of several of its larger schools caused it to implode.

Upon looking at the actual results for the Mavericks under Dan McCarrell, rather than just looking at his W-L totals, as well as at the website of the now-defunct NCC, I can see why his 17 years running the program in Mankato must've been more frustrating than I had thought. Seven different schools claimed the NCC title during McCarrell's tenure, and those seven included all five of the schools that eventually moved on to D1 before the league folded. (Another one of those seven, Nebraska-Omaha, has since moved on to D1 as well.) That's a lot of churn at the top without the Mavericks ever getting the chance to hoist the trophy themselves; considering how often they finished in the top three or four under McCarrell, there must've been a real "always the bridesmaid, never the bride" sense about the program during his time at the helm. They went 172-152 (.531) in the NCC during his 17 years there, but only 30-53 (.361) against teams that finished in the top two.

(Weird fact of the day: Although Bosko Djurickovic and his mentor Dan McCarrell never faced each other as opposing coaches, at least in an official game, the Mavericks did play Carthage in 1995-96, the season before Bosko took over in Kenosha. MSUM won, 108-86, in Mankato.)

Also meeting the above requirements, and included on the 2014-2015 NABC Honors Court, are Kevin Honn and Jayme Moten of North Central.
I believe IWU and NCC were the only 2 CCIW teams with representatives on the Court.

Congrats to all the Titan and Cardinal members.

Don't know if anyone else feels the same, but I'm kinda surprised that we haven't heard any more news on he recruiting front. Especially with regard to some possible NPU transfers, and any other additional bodies at all at Elmhurst. The NPU situation is surprising as, if I remember correctly, Mr. Sager previously seemed pretty sure that they would adding some transfers over the summer. While summer isn't over, its getting late.

The Elmhurst situation is puzzling because it would seem that their success last season would have translated to more than 2 additions. Add in that after next season the presumptive starter at every position will be gone, and the situation becomes even more difficult to understand.  :-\

Lastly, Bosko basically guaranteed a great Carthage recruiting class with the blurb "we have to have an exceptional recruiting class this year, and I have no doubt we will." While he may have some of those exceptional recruits hidden someplace, and may be waiting to unleash them on the unsuspecting competition, the four names revealed so far would not seem to serve as prima facie evidence that the Carthage class is, to date, "exceptional." However, unlike the NPU and Elmhurst situations, I don't find that too surprising.

IWU found a loophole in the NCAA eligibiity rules for NBA players.  Steph Curry, LeBron James, and six others I am not yet authorized to disclose, are expected in Bloomington this fall.  Ron Rose says they will be given a fair chance to try out for the team.

In the slow news department: All you Manito lovers, mark Sat. Sept. 5 (Sat B4 Labor Day) on your calendar for the hotly contested Popcorn Festival 3 on 3 b'ball tournament at 11:30 and stay for the BBQ chicken dinner. Wonder for which team(s) Ryan Knuppel and Michael Berg and will compete. If you want a full morning, run the 5K race at 8 and witness the parade at 10. Nothing like a central IL Labor Day weekend festival.

Chillax, Mark. When -- not if, when -- there's something to report from NPU vis-a-vis additional recruits, I'll report it.

As I've said before, you're presuming that we have access to all of the information and that our recruiting lists for each CCIW school are thus airtight. (I'm saying that because my read on your bit about "exceptional [Carthage] recruits hidden someplace" that Bosko is "waiting to unleash ... on the unsuspecting competition" is that you're being 100% sarcastic.) I don't see how such presumption is warranted, because: a) I'm not convinced that each CCIW coaching staff has one or more CCIW Chat posters with whom they share recruiting information; and b) I'm not sure that each CCIW coaching staff is even inclined to share said information. Remember, a lot of what Bob's picked up has been off of Twitter, and Twitter is most definitely a mixed blessing for college basketball coaches. On the one hand, it allows them to keep in touch with prospects. On the other hand, it means that there's now a whole array of things over which they have no control. ;) :D

Look at the example of hopefan over in the SLIAC room. He has assiduously cultivated good relationships with each SLIAC head coach over the years, and he's diligent about posting recruiting info -- and he still has huge gaps in that recruiting info every off-season, not because he's left any stone unturned but because there are coaches who simply choose not to be forthcoming with him.

Don't encourage him, BW. The only way Chuck will ever learn is if we ignore him when he acts out like that. ;)

Funny. Reminds me of when I convinced at least one WIACer a few years ago that the conference had a new rule where assistant coaches could play if they had been out of the league for at least 5 years. Stevens Point, at the time, had some kind of combination of Brant Bailey, Dane Seckar-Anderson and Jason Kalsow as their assistants. Not a bad front line.
