IWU and Olivet Naz always used to play a regular season non-con game - when did that drop to a scrimmage, or is this just a one year thing?

IWU hasn't played Olivet Nazarene in a real game in the last 7 years (since 2007-08).  Ron Rose ended IWU's series with his old boss/mentor Ralph Hodge simply due to Division III's focus on in-region NCAA D3 games -- much like Augie ended their series vs NAIA St. Ambrose.

Unfortunate, but that's why IWU doesn't play ONU any longer.  I think it was the right call.

Yes, Elmhurst won the CCIW title that year. It's still the only CCIW men's basketball title that Elmhurst has ever won in the 62 years that that school's been in our league.

It adds an interesting element to this coming season, because it could very well end with CCIW title #2 for the Bluejays. And that would put head coach John Baines on the same level as his mentor, 2000-01 EC head coach Mark Scherer.

Thanks for answering that question.

That must have been a fun season to follow the league.

that season probably featured the greatest group of front court players the league has ever seen.

Yes, I have. It ran for years and years every weekend at a theater in Rogers Park here on the North Side called the 400. That's where I saw it, back in the '80s when I was a North Park student. It still runs at midnight Saturday here on the North Side at the Music Box Theater in Lakeview, not too far from Wrigley Field.

It's actually not that good of a movie, but of course people don't really go to screenings in order to watch the film for itself. It's more of an event than a movie.

IWU's final scrimmage is today at 4:00pm vs Hanover (at the Shirk Center).  Probable starters:

G - Bryce Dolan, 6-1/165 Sr.
G - Brady Rose, 6-2/180 So.
F - Andy Stempel, 6-4/192 Jr.
F - Ryan Coyle, 6-6/210, Sr.
C - Trevor Seibring, 6-8/235 Jr.

(6-8 F/C Mike Marietti is still out.)

IWU won the two varsity periods vs Hanover by 10 points total today.

The Titans open at home a week from today vs Benedictine.

Red and black

Carthage played up at MSOE last night. They won the two varsity periods by 3 points.

Started and played two freshmen full time. They handled themselves pretty well from what I heard.

Looking forward to seeing them in action next weekend in their home tournament. Starting against Iowa Wesleyan then either Robert Morris or Adrian.

Any recap of the scrimmage from our faithful IWU posters? I'd be curious to find out why Hanover was able to stay with the Titans. While both were picked 3rd in their respective leagues ... I would think IWU would have been favored by more, especially how it sounds like they played against ONU. Hanover is traditionally a pretty good program so ... perhaps not unexpected? (Of course a 10pt game could be a close game that blew up at the end, or a blowout that ended up closer then the final score would indicate)

I watched the first section of the IWU-Hanover scrimmage.  The Titans looked pretty sharp, especially on defence.  Some good trey shooting from Dolan, Rose, Pennington, Stempel and Coyle.  This team could be more perimeter-oriented that we might first think.  Important to get Marietti back.  Trevor Seibring is just so solid, a big fundamental, tough when he gets the ball low on the block.  Very hard to stop. Shoots FTs well.  Titans got out to a big lead in that session, on pushing the ball, hitting 3s, rebounding well.  The normal energy off the bench from Pennington, Nelms and Bausch, some very good pieces to bring off the bench in rotations.  I think if this team works very very hard at being hard-nosed on D all year, they could be very good.  The offensive skills were better than I expected for this time of year, so we'll see if this team finds the scorers and find the normal formula for many Titan wins -- get to 78, win the game.  Time will tell.

Don't know the Hanover program or players well, so can't comment on that.  They looked long and quick, but not very impressive on getting good looks for shots.  Titan D had something to do with that in the session I observed.

Looking forward to the season -- IWU opening up vs. Benedictine 7 p.m. @The Shirk on Saturday, November 14th.  First four are home games, on 14th, 17th, 21st, and 22nd.

From what I heard after Benedictine's first scrimmage, He Who Shall Not Be Named looked absolutely dynamite for the Bennies. He's actually started using his size to his advantage and has become a solid presence underneath the basket.

What the heck is that? Is that like somebody's Indian name? Like Dances With Wolves?
