So with the new shot clock down to 30 I would think that turnovers and scoring to increase and FG% to go down.  So looks like we are slouching towards "Grinnell" ;D

I see it differently. I think there's as much of a chance we'll see more 45-28 scores like the Elite 8 game between UWSP and East Texas Baptist.

Why won't we see this?  Token full-court pressure back to an ever increasing number of zones... 2-3 one time, then 1-3-1, then 1-2-2...

Token pressure shaves off an extra few seconds and every time there's a switch in zones, the offense needs to take some time to adjust to the new zone.

With the increased turnovers and the lower field goal %, with less time to get a good shot, why would scoring go up?

BTW, I'm not saying this is what I'd do... but I could foresee it.

They experimented with these new rules at the NIT post-season tournament last year and despite the fact the teams were "number 69" and below... shooting percentages were equal or higher, turnovers did not increase, the number possessions increased significantly... and scoring was up as well. That was compared to the regular season AND the NCAA tournament last year.

The same fears about shooting percentages, turnovers, and scoring going down have been brought up with every major rule change like when the women added the 10-second back-court violation a few years ago. Those fears have never been realized.

Ignore the fact this link is deadspin for a second and read what Ken Pomeroy had to say about the 30 second shot clocks affect on the NIT Tournament.   http://regressing.deadspin.com/how-has-the-ncaas-new-30-sec-shot-clock-worked-this-pos-1695275647

Thanks Q.  Good stuff.  I agree that the key this year may be the defensive development and identity, esp. guarding the perimeter.  No doubt, this is potentially a very explosive offensive team.  I hope many players step up to leadership as Nelms and Marietti will not be on the floor much, at least initially.  Seems the guys that have not started that much (Rose, Stempel) have to settle in and play like veterans right away.  We'll know much much more after the first four home games.

Looking forward to the season.

Mr. Ypsi

Nice write-up, Bob.

2006: Final Four.  2008: well, nobody's perfect :P  2010: Elite Eight.  2012: Final Four.  2014: Final Four.  2016: ??

Watch out world, we like those even numbered years! ;D

[I kinda doubt they have the firepower to go far this year, but I also doubted them in both 2012 and 2014, so what does this glass-half-empty guy know? ::)

IWU will play a good Benedictine team Sat. IWU lost to BU last year in the opener at Lisle. The widely ridiculed (on this venue) Luke Johnson is a legitimate 6'9' force in the post and without Marietti, will pose matchup problems.  I expect IWU's depth to big a big factor. Look for a high scoring game with more possessions and the new softer Shirk rims allowing more shots rolling around and in. Crowd should be good, maybe close to 2,000 with more students involved. The Cubs made the Final 4 in MLB and the Titans, like the SF Giants, seem to excel in even-numbered years. IWU begins season with 6 Shirk games.

Millikin scheduled exhibition with MacMurray last night cancelled due to dangerous travel conditions (high winds)... won't be made up...

Buckle up....the Kenosha News came out with their article today on the Carthage basketball team.  Here are a few quotes from Bosko.

Based on Carthage getting picked last - "I don't think that I'll have those people invest my money or make my horse racing bets."

"I certainly think that we're not going to finish there.  In fact, I would like to think that we're going to be toward the top end of the league."   (Really !!)

"This will be a very interesting team, for three weeks this has been one of my favorite teams in recent years."   (I have to keep these articles from year to year...I think he recylces that comment pretty often).

"After Augustana, I really think it's going to be pretty wide open."   "We're very injured right now - more than any time in all my years, but we'll get through that and I think we'll have a good season."

Starters for tomorrow night include two freshmen, Justin Kedrowski and Drew Joiner.  They will be joined by Mike Stevenson, Myles Olsen and Scott McNellis.  Brad Kruse and Kiston Lee are two of the players he is referring to as being injured that would be potential starters.

North Park is not Ohio State, Mark. We don't stick the definite article in front of the school's name at all, let alone stress it. That whole "The Ohio State University" shtick is the most pretentious thing in college athletics this side of Miami (FL) players and fans referring to their school as "the U".
We Minnesotans also call the University of Minnesota "The U".   But that's more about it being the only division 1 school in the state rather than something to distinguish itself nationally.

Yeah, as an alumnus of a school that's always crawling with Minnesotans, I'm aware of that. But nobody would ever accuse Minnesotans of pretentiousness (aside from a few yuppie precincts in Minneapolis, perhaps). Pretentiousness doesn't fit in well with Minnesota Nice. ;)

Let the games begin!  Good luck to all the CCIW players and coaches for the 2015-16 season.  Play hard, travel well, travel safe.  Enjoy the journey.

AndOne

North Central roster is finally up. Lots of both non-returnees, and new faces.

The Cardinals seem to likely have one of the nation's more difficult schedules with nine games scheduled against D3Hoops Top 25 ranked pre-season teams including six against CCIW opponents, Augie, Elmhurst, and IWU. The season gets off to a challenging start when the Cards face #7 Mt. Union on opening night, and #17 Chicago in their 2nd game. They will also face last year's national champ and pre-season #9 Stevens Point as well as ORV Centre in the Eastern Univ. Holiday Tourney in Miami in Dec., and traditional local foes Benedictine and Aurora picked for 2nd and 3rd in the NACC.
