Congratulations to Juwan Henry upon winning his third CCIW Player of the Week award this season. The story makes mention of the fact that he's now the tenth-leading scorer in NPU men's basketball history. Here's where he sits on the school's all-time scoring leaderboard:

  1.  Michael Thomas (1978-81)  2085
  2.  Justyne Monegain (1982-85)  2039
  3.  Michael Harper (1977-80)  1880
  4.  Modzel Greer (1977-80)  1826
  5.  Greg Crawford (1967-70)  1690
  6.  Keith McDonald (1970-73)  1609
  7.  Rick Alspach (1997-00)  1562
  8.  Mike Barach (1986-88)  1507
  9.  Michael Starks (1986-88)  1499
10.  Juwan Henry (2014-)  1401

He's in some pretty serious company ... and he's only a junior.

Elmhurst 71
Wheaton 46

Will Nixon: 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks
Bryant Ackerman: 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists
Jalen Loving: 10 points, 3 rebounds
Brandon Schwebke: 3 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists

Jonathan Berntsen: 14 points
Trae Masten: 9 points, 2 rebounds
Michael Berg: 7 points, 10 rebounds

Ugly shooting night in Wheaton. . .  and Wheaton was just 21.3%.

It was hard to sit in King and watch that performance by Wheaton. No way to say it other than embarrassing. Equally surprising was that WC was only -9 rebounding and -2 offensive glass.  The whole 2nd half seemed like a gravy train of 2nd and 3rd chances for the BlueJays.  The only positives(and I'm scratching here) is that Trae Masten again tried to post up a couple times with a smaller defenders on him.  He wasn't too successful but trying to develop that game now with another 10 lbs of muscle, will make him that much more dangerous a couple seasons from now.

In preparing for this game, one of the primary points of the Cardinal's game plan was to take away as much of IWU's three point shot making ability as possible through forcing both poor shot selection, and trey attempts late in the 30 second shot clock limit. The other point was to let Wesleyan's Trevor Seibring go one-on-one as it was felt that the home team was capable of more damage from beyond the arc than within it's confines. Seibring, in my opinion one of the league's brightest stars, had an excellent game with 26 points and 10 boards. He scored 10 baskets, but those were 10 two point baskets as opposed to more possible IWU treys. The plan actually worked quite well as IWU, which had been hitting around 42% on threes, was held to just over 28% (6 of 21). In post game discussions among and with the NCC staff, it was felt that chief among the reasons for NCC's success was the degree of pressure the Cardinal guards were able to exert against the three point shot making ability of IWU's Dolan & Pennington. Particularly Jayme Moten's D against Dolan who was made to really work to get his long shots off, and who only hit two all night. Only 6 of Dolan's 15 points came against Moten. Its not the first time this year that Jayme has played a very important role in a NCC victory as much through his defense as his offense. While his offensive numbers are somewhat down compared to last season's, his defensive contributions have more than made up for the scoring differential.

I'm not sure this is a result where you can point to NCC's game plan going in as the reason for victory.  IWU led by 6 at halftime, 6 with 10:00 to play, and 14 with 5:56 to go (and 8 with 3:23 to play).  NCC decided to play Seibring one-on-one in the low post, and he was a dominant presence in the game...which is the biggest reason IWU was up 14 late.

The Cardinals won because of what happened in that final 5:56...a stretch where game plans were completely out the window.  Realistically, if the Titans don't, 1) turn it over 3 times, 2) miss FTs, and 3) make some awful decisions during that stretch, the Cards - as great as they played in the final minutes - would never have been able to make that amazing comeback.

The portion of the game that was played via game plans was controlled by IWU.

Well, you can make an argument that this approach kept them within 14 rather than being down more, and therefore made the comeback possible.  While you certainly can't count on that kind of late push on a regular basis, the Titans are tough in the blocks and from beyond the arc, and North Central's pick-your-poison approach was able to limit one of those two weapons just enough Saturday night.

Exactly, kiko.
Had specifically limiting the ability of IWU to make threes not been a major part of the game plan, NCC may very well have had to make up more than a 14 point deficit, the likelihood of which happening was zero.
Rather than the final outcome being dependent only on play during the final 5:56 of regulation, it was a function of the entire 45 minutes of play.
During the 2nd half and in OT, NCC limited IWU to 2 of 7 shooting from three, neither of which came from Dolan or Pennington, Wesleyan's primary weapons.
Lastly, remember that I'm only relaying the opinion of the NCC staff. Its really not realistic to suggest anyone other than the involved professionals would have a better handle on the primary reason(s) for the final outcome.  :)

Wow. Looks like to me that NCC -14 with 5:56 to go, had em right where they wanted em! Great game plan.

Obviously!
As the kids say, "Scoreboard, scoreboard."
Whatever works, USee. Whatever works.
In fact the ultimate result must be the reason Mike Schauer was on the phone with Todd Raridon first thing this morning requesting a copy for Wheaton's 1/27 game with IWU. As Coach Schauer said, the plan he used in their first meeting didn't work so well.  ;)

Coach Schauer is likely placing a lot of those calls this year.

Thanks sac.  My posting skills, which have always been suspect at best, have clearly eroded in the midst of this depressing SAD season!

Its a little hard to believe that any team would have a 79% chance of winning at The Shirk Center For Athletics and Recreation.
The IWU starters average more combined points than do the Augie starters.
There is currently a great deal of angst wafting through the air in the Shirk Center. Can the Green Team use that to enhance their chances?
It seems the stage may be set for that other 21% to seize victory from the jaws of defeat.
IWU 77-Augie 75?

Besides death, are there other reasons season ticket holders at Shirk are showing up at a decreasing rate?  Is the waiting list still in place?  What is the seat license fee?

I apologize to all of my fans for the delayed reaction since Saturday...

Huge one for NCC tonight who dearly need to get back on track and get off to far better starts than the past couple of games. Carthage may not be the best in the CCIW but if the Cards can put the hurt on em and gain some momentum here, I like them getting back on track for the home stretch.

Still "don't believe....what I just sawww" after that Saturday game at IWU but it felt so good to watch that collapse. Although a nice little win from them over Augie tonight would shake things up.. Only a matter of time in this league.

Hopefully number 32 for the Cardinals can keep up this dominating stretch for NCC and continues to make a play for some hardware at the end of the year. But Alex Sorenson should eat up multiple 6 foot 3 kids out there for the RedMen.
I like the Cardinals big tonight, unless Stevie D wants to suit up and show Young Raridon who's boss. Lol. But won't complain if we can get some OT or some type of thriller either..  :-X
