I was surprised to read in that story that the MIAC does not allow grad students to play on its teams -- and that the MIAC is the only league in D3 that has that rule.

I'm pretty happy that we don't have the MIAC's big-bully-terrorizing-the-playground problem. Even back in the old days when Augustana annually won the most CCIW championships with numbing regularity, our friends in Rock Island weren't even close to having the kind of all-sports dominance in this league that UST currently has in the MIAC.

Good competitive balance is what makes a league interesting.

When Wheaton was 'invited' to leave in the late fifties, were they dominating in most or all sports, or just the big two of football and basketball?

They were caught shaking their hips to 'Rock Around The Clock'...  :P

+K! ;D

But, while that might have gotten them kicked out of Wheaton, I doubt it would've gotten them kicked out of the conference! ;)

I forget that the expression "the old days" means something different to you than it does to most of the rest of us. ;)

Back in the Paleozoic Era (i.e., the late 1950s), the CCIW sponsored far fewer sports than it does today. For example, no women's sports were sponsored by the league back then. The CCIW only sponsored eight men's sports: football, basketball, baseball, swimming, wrestling, track & field, golf, and tennis.

Wheaton was invincible in football and basketball. The other leg of the Big Three, baseball, was dominated by Illinois Wesleyan. Wheaton also dominated wrestling, which was a newly-sponsored sport for the league back in the late '50s, and track & field as well.

Swimming was totally North Central's preserve. Golf and tennis had multiple schools win the league title during the late '50s.

So, in other words, Wheaton dominated half of the league's sports. I think it's probably true that Wheaton's utter dominance in football and basketball was what got the orange-colored school the invitation from the league's other members to find another home, though, given the importance of those two sports.

(Yeah, I know, guys. I got ypsied on this one, since all of this info is easily accessible on cciw.org. But, in all fairness to Chuck, I was curious to find out this stuff myself.)

Thanks, Greg!  I was merely curious, but not nearly curious enough to search sport-by-sport - and the CCIW (as far as I know) has never had an 'all-sports' trophy (which would greatly simplify 'dominance'), so thanks for your sleuthing.

Yeah, the late fifties was less than a decade before I entered IWU. ;)  And my age showed up again yesterday, dammit, when another friend passed away.  She was in her late eighties and vigorous almost to the end.  Since we will all go sometime, she had one of the 'better' deaths - a form of cancer that is almost never detected until it has spread everywhere : she was diagnosed on Sunday and died on Wednesday.  Tina, RIP.

If it's any consolation... he's really good at luring his victims into his web.  ::)

It looks like the CCIW will add yet another new member.

North Central is merging with Shimer College, bringing the venerable Great Books institution to Naperville.  This was only a matter of time for Shimer, but it will likely have little to no impact on North Central athletics as Shimer does not sponsor varsity.  They do not even sponsor intramural athletics.

Gregory Sager

That's an interesting development. Speaking as someone who seriously contemplated enrolling at a Great Books school when I was looking at colleges as a high-school senior (St. John's College in Annapolis, to be specific), I appreciate what schools like Shimer offer, and I've followed Shimer's travails over the past couple of decades as it fought to stay alive. I'm certainly glad that it did. The Waukegan location was terrible, and, while Illinois Tech was a very convenient home for Shimer after it left Waukegan, it never really struck me that it would be a good match if tenant merged into landlord on an institutional basis. (Joe Hakes might differ with me on that assessment.)

North Central isn't the first name that comes to mind in terms of potential merger recipients of Shimer, but it's at least a congenial fit by virtue of being (mostly) a liberal-arts college. This is a real feather in NCC's cap from an academic viewpoint. Good for NCC, and I'm glad that Shimer will continue to survive.

(As for WUH's prediction that the addition of Shimer will have little to no impact on North Central athletics, truer words were never typed. From my experience with Great Books students and alumni, I can vouch that "Great Books students" and "jocks" are a Venn diagram with no intersection. ;) As far as NCC athletics is concerned, I predict that Shimer students will be seen on Cardinals athletic rosters about as frequently as iwu70 gets sincere requests in this room to discuss Illinois Wesleyan opera singers. :D)

Tyler Burdine isn't much of a scorer, but he is a legit 6-9 and moves well.  He should provide some nice post depth for the Titans the next two seasons.

It is quite rare for IWU hoops to accept at CC transfer, right?
