I was going to wait until Saturday morning to do the Massey stuff, WUH, since contests between now and then (especially the Central @ Augie game tomorrow night) might affect Massey's ratings, including those of the Bears and the Titans.

Agreed with the possibility of a change in Massey, I was going to make a point about the game being a toss-up, but then the students started showing up so I hit post...

Even if Augustana loses, the game Bears-Titans game will still be a toss-up according to Ken Massey.

Crucial for rankings (and probably Pool C); not necessarily crucial for the season.  NEVER forget the 2010 IWU baseball team!

A losing record with a week to go in the regular season, they snuck into the conference tourney, won that, won the regional, and won the Walnut-and-Bronze in Appleton.

Even if it is 1,000 to 1, or 1,000,000 to 1, as long as you still have A chance at success, it ain't yet crucial! ;)

Crucial is when you reach the point that a loss mathematically eliminates you.

How can we, when we can practically set our watches by how often you bring it up, especially in the CCIW baseball room? ::)

Your watch will get you in big trouble. ::)  I admit to bragging about it occasionally on the basketball or football forums (usually in some appropriate, at least to me! context), but the baseball thread is probably the LEAST likely place for me to post that - I assume they are already well aware.

Ypsi, I'll stick with "crucial" and hope our Titans win all or most of these important upcoming games. I'd love to go into the rest of the conference season play at 10-2.  CCIW season will be a war . . . Raridon's injury notwithstanding.  Titans surely need to steal a few tough road games and protect the Dennie Bridges floor for sure.   Winning at NPU will be tough.

Greek Tragedy

Wisconsin is supposed to get blitzed with a huge snowstorm starting today through tomorrow night. Any news down there on how much snow south of Wisconsin? Any anticipated game cancelations because of the impending weather?

Chuck, you brag about it constantly over on the baseball boards:

AHEM!!  With due respect to Coach Schmidt, perhaps he can get Coach Martel to show him what a national championship trophy looks like! ;D

(BP, I thought I'd start the trash-talkin' real early this year! ;))

As a Titan who followed that season closely, this is nearly correct, but not quite.  They started their run with a week left in the regular season, finishing just barely over .500, then rolled thru the conference tourney, the regional, and the world series with only two losses total!  In the final game (after Cortland had eliminated Linfield), IWU had 3 in the third to go up 4-2, then 4 in the fourth, then blew the game to smithereens with 9 in the fifth.  Both coaches showed good sportsmanship and soon emptied the benches and bullpens - everyone deserves a chance to play in a tournament game which is clearly over.  (BTW, that game also proved there is no run rule in the postseason, as it went full length despite the Titans being up by 15.)

Close (though not necessarily well-played) first game in Bloomington.  After three innings, NPU has 6 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and two Titan errors; IWU has 4 runs (all earned) on 6 hits, an error, and two wild pitches.  A very important DH for both teams if they want to contend. (Yeah, I'm aware it is VERY early, but you don't want to dig TOO deep a hole - runs like IWU had in 2010 are EXTREMELY rare.)

IF their pitching could just step up, their offense could take them to Appleton, but I'm not holding my breath.  I don't see a Pankau on the staff, but I didn't see a 'Pankau' in 2010 until he suddenly destroyed Cortland in the title game.

I confess that I am not that much into D3 baseball (I follow only the west and central boards).  And I never followed it at all until the post-season in 2010, when the final word was "They will 'Remember the Titans' in Appleton".  The performance by Jason Pankau that day, against a Cortland team that had pounded the crap out of all other pitching, made me a fan.  (During the crucial innings, when IWU went from down 1-2, to up 17-2, he yielded ZERO base runners!)  That both coaches cleared the benches when the game was obviously over (give those guys a taste of the WS!) solidified my fanship.

And this is just last spring's selection ... and they're the ones that I was able to find with a few minutes' worth of hunting for them.

Mr. B and I joke about printing out your comments about 2010 someday and presenting them to you in book form. ;)

I'm wondering the same thing. The snow is going to start falling here in the city late this afternoon, and it isn't supposed to stop until early Sunday morning ... at which point the temperature will drop faster than Conair stock after the Cuisinart recall.

The question is whether the games that are called off (if they are called off) will be postponements or cancellations. They're all non-conference affairs, which means that they don't necessarily have to be rescheduled, but basketball coaches usually try pretty hard to get a game postponed to a later date rather than cancelled, as long as there's a mutually available date open on the calendar.

Just one game on tap for tonight, weather permitting:

Central (7-1) @ Augustana (7-3)

If you're not doing any beat-the-snowstorm Christmas shopping tonight, watching this one will probably be worth your time. This is how Massey sees it:

@ Augustana 80, Central 75 (AC 67%, Central 33%)

The Central at Augustana game has been moved up an hour due to the impending storm.  Tipoff is now at 6:00 pm.
