My father-in-law's brother was in town last weekend from Spokane.  He loves the Zags mens and womens hoops teams.  I've only met him three times, and we spent time talking basketball.  He grew up in Pasadena, CA, and stuck around to attend UCLA games during the Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton eras.  He could not decide if Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Bill Russell was the greatest to play in the NBA.  I asked him about Pete Maravich.  Uncle Mike never saw Maravich play live.

I came across this piece today.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk-JJX2SRHc  In this three minute clip, Bill Walton is astonished by LSU coach Dale Brown's research on Maravich's shots - in an era without the college trey at 19'9" - that Maravich would have averaged 13 treys made per game and had a career scoring average of 57PPG instead of the measly 44ppg.

Did anybody on this board see Pistol Pete perform in college (as opposed to some YouTube clips)?  If so, thoughts?

I saw The Pistol play in the pros against the Bucks in Milwaukee. He was with the Atlanta Hawks at the time. Every time he had the ball you had to watch because the chance that he would do something you had never seen before was pretty high. He had a line like 36 points, a dozen assists ( his passing was spectacular) several steals and rebounds. Very few players demanded your attention like him. You just didn't want to miss something.

Also saw Wilt Chamberlain in person a couple of times. The most imposing physical presence ever. Wilt also did things you hadn't seen because he was incredibly strong and athletic for his size.

Those are two that will never be duplicated.

kiko, one final word on CR7.  Since I have been declared way too old to know about CR7 (I was 40+ when my first son was born), I asked my soccer-crazy sons, 28 and 25, about it.  (They share my contempt for CR's sportsmanship, the older one being even more contemptuous than I am, but admire his awesome skills.)  Since they were both well aware of his jersey number, they both correctly guessed what CR7 was all about, but neither had ever heard the term.

BTW, I'm dying to know who was profiled in "Titans at Large".  Dawn Upshaw was never ANYONE's  understudy! ;D  Do we have another diva I wasn't familiar with?  (You're welcome, Mark! ;)  And keep looking for IWU's Xao Ming.)

The kid from Montenegro is a really intriguing recruit.  Sounds like a really good get for a DIII school.

Intriguing indeed!

In terms of population, Montenegro is seriously not much bigger than the greater Quad Cities area, so it is hard to know what participation on the national team means, but they love basketball in the former Yugoslav states.  In case anyone is curious, that name is pronounced KLA-yich.

Stefan apparently starred for his Montenegran U-18 team in 2014-2015, and then headed to California as an exchange student for his junior (and senior?) year in high school.  That begs the question of how old he is.  Perhaps he's a 20 year old hoops veteran with four years of eligibility, or he may have been a 15 year old on a U-18 national team.  Either scenario bodes well for basketball success with the Vikings.

+1 You are the voice of North Central basketball, huh?  That is awesome.

North Park's 2017-18 non-conference schedule is set:

date  opponent  2016-17 record
Fri., Nov. 17  BLACKBURN (North Park Classic)  12-13
Sat., Nov. 18  ILLINOIS TECH (North Park Classic)  22-6
Tue., Nov. 21  CHICAGO  16-9
Tue., Nov. 28  UW-OSHKOSH  17-11
Sat., Dec. 9  @ Coe  10-15
Sat., Dec. 16  @ Lake Forest  14-11
Wed., Dec. 20  vs. TBA (@ Transylvania tourney)  (Transy 17-10)
Thu., Dec. 21  vs. TBA (@ Transylvania tourney)
Wed., Feb. 7  EAST-WEST    ?

This will be the first time ever that North Park has hosted a tipoff tournament.

The fact that NPU will be playing Coe in Cedar Rapids on December 9 indicates that the Vikings have a CCIW bye that day, as the three December CCIW dates are Saturday, December 2; Wednesday, December 6; and Saturday, December 9. Naturally, their second bye is the Wednesday, February 7 date on which they'll be hosting East-West.

This will be the first time since 2008-09 that the Vikings haven't played Trine. In fact, the absence of any MIAA team at all on the sked is pretty conspicuous. In both of the past two seasons NPU played four MIAA teams, and the Vikings played three MIAA teams in each of the three seasons before that.

Transylvania hasn't posted its schedule yet, and I'm very curious to see who else is showing up for that tournament in Lexington.

Reminds me of the one time Pat asked me to do the play by play/commentary for D3hoops for the Oshkosh at Lawrence game about 10 years ago. Thankfully, the mic ended up not working and I saved embarrassment  (or could've gone the other way and I'd still be doing that now). Anyway, it was one of the 1st years that current head coach Joel DePagter was there and no one in the crowd prior to the game could tell me how to pronounce his name correctly.

In other words, he asked you to do the game without a partner? That's a pretty tall task for a novice.

The horror! ;)

(Actually, if you're one of the 10 percent of people who enjoy public speaking, and you're diligent about working at it, broadcasting games can be a lot of fun. I really miss it during the summer.)

The trick is to go over to the visiting team's bench during the shootaround and ask either the visiting head coach or one of his/her assistants how to pronounce the names of the players and the head coach. (That goes for the obvious-looking names as well as the difficult-looking ones, because sometimes the obvious-looking ones have a prounciation that you wouldn't expect.) This is what I do before every game, and then I pass along the pronunciations to the P.A. announcer.

I did a podcast with DePagter years ago. He told me it's pronounced Deh-POCK-ter as I recall. :)

Yeah, I have several parents of my son's friends with that last name, so I know how to pronounce it, 10 years later! It's a common name in the Sheboygan/Oostburg area.

Greg, the game was actually at Lawrence. I knew all the Oshkosh players' names! That's why I found it kind of odd that none of the HOME team's fans knew how to pronounce their own coach's name.

I'm not a public speaker by any means and I don't like standing up and doing speeches or the like. However, if I had practice, I'm confident I would like doing PBP and commentary.

Back when I actually played soccer, during the games we weren't involved in, but our friends were, we would do commentary in our worst British voices from the bleachers.

I know plenty of people who've done both, but I've found that most people prefer doing either one or the other. (I'd be interested in finding out Pat's, Gordon's, D-Mac's, and Bob's preferences.) The two tasks have some things in common, but each has its own required skill set and/or area of expertise.

As with previous years, dates can be cancelled without much warning, or your team might not have enough players for a full team on any given night. Players from those teams can still go and just mix in with other teams players. Check with players on your team or your coach if you have any questions about any given night.

* Interesting sidelights

> This is a no clocks, no refs/call your own fouls league. Part of the origin of the league stems from the fact that the last several years that the games were played at the Joy Of The Game facility in Deerfield, the refs were, no other way to say it, pure s**t. They would often just stand at mid court and take a couple steps right or left depending what end of the court the ball was in. Play more often resembled a football game than a basketball game. On top of this, the team fee had risen to $900 the last 2-3 years at JOG. The kids do a much better job themselves with the bonus being there are no fees involved thanks to the generosity of the host schools.

> Games are to 13 by 2s and 3s. Normally when a team hits or goes over 13, the player who made the last basket also has to make a free throw. If he misses, the game continues.

> Depending on how many players from each team are able to show up on any given night, there are games that have teams comprised of players from more than one team. One night last summer at Elmhurst there was a team made up of 5 guys from 5 different schools. I think they lost one, maybe 2 games all night.
