Whitworth 75
#12-North Central 72

The Cardinals got just 5 points off the bench...and just one bench player scored.

NCC is now 1-2.

This Whitworth team is more athletic and slightly smaller than in years past. They have been very good defensively (albeit until yesterday against bad competition), and so far look better overall than last year's team. D3hoops whiffed, they are and they were always going to be a top 25 team. I'm glad the Pirates got to face a team like NCC before getting Whitman twice in conference.

Keep in mind, North Central lost to Heidelberg (11-15, 7-11 last year) and had a tough time with Benedictine.  So right now, a win over NCC is not really validation for the Top 25.

The win over NCC wasn't needed to validate the opinion that this Whitworth team is better than last year's top 25 team. Since the d3hoops pollsters whiffed on NCC too (according to Titan), Cardinals fans can be happy that they kept this one close and didn't let Whitworth run away with it after going up by 12 late in the 1st.

I think the pollsters had NCC just about right in the preseason (#12).  But obviously the Cardinals don't have things put together very well yet.  They're not playing at a Top 25 level.

I don't know anything about Whitworth this year - wouldn't surprise me at all if they're a Top 25-caliber team.

Greek Tragedy

The pollsters hardly whiffed on Whitworth, in my opinion. I know the voters are supposed to get something like a preseason packet on the team's and just looking at last year's roster to this year's team, they lost 4 senior starters. You can talk about transfers all you want, and Lester looks like a good one, but it's all speculation until they get on the court.

I mean it makes sense that a program like Rochester can lose it's top 3 scorers from last years team, still be ranked 16th, but losing that 4th senior would have been the nail in the coffin for their pre-season poll hopes. Whitewater lost 4 starters...

Traditionally strong programs not from the west coast have lost a majority of their scoring and or players and not been dropped off the face of the d3 earth, from a polls standpoint. I would have thought Whitworth would be afforded the same luxury. They were not. That's all.

Greek Tragedy

Actually, they are 32nd, 31 points out of the Top 25...hardly dropped off the face of the D3 earth.

yes, but lives stats free and gets the job done for this retired guy!  Titans win.  My free live stats froze at 80-59 with about 1:09 to go (live stats guy did you go home?). Titans had only 3 turnovers for the game.

Three turnovers are going to win you a lot of games.  Nicely done!

Wheaton over Franklin, 83-70

Francis 25 pts, 9/15 FG, 3/8 3pt
Eichelberger, 17 pts, 13 rebs
Samuelson 15 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asst
Gunter 8 pts, 8rebs
Peters, 6 rebs, 7 assts

Beinecke 17 pts
Gutierrez, 15 pts

Francis picked up his second foul 2 mins into the game and sat the rest of the first half having taken no shots.   But it didn't matter as the Thunder came out red hot and shot 65% from the field in the first 20 mins.  Wheaton took the lead after 7 or 8 mins and the Grizzlies never really threatened the rest of the way.  All of Samuelson's points were in the first half while all of Francis' were in the second.  Zack Kvam did a great job with Francis on the bench and Eichelberger's athleticism afforded him lots of opportunities for the double/double.  Wheaton +14 on the boards.

IWU 80
Millsaps 59

http://www.iwusports.com/boxscore.aspx?id=5201&path=

* Brady Rose: 20 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assists
* Alex O'Neill: 12 pts, 2 reb
* Jaylen Beasley: 11 pts, 9 reb
* Zach Knobloch: 10 pts, 2 reb
* Colin Bonnett: 8 pts, 3 reb, 3 assists

Not a particularly pretty game, but a win nonetheless. Millsaps had the IWU lead down to 3 at the 9:02 mark of the 2nd half but Brady Rose scored 8 in a row to push it back to 11.

The Titans play against "The System" tomorrow afternoon.  Rhodes (3-1) won 141-107 today vs Howard Payne.  They are averaging 127.8 per game.

IWU last faced the Grinnell System early in the non-conference in 2015-16, when the defeated Greenville 150-117. http://www.iwusports.com/boxscore.aspx?id=3474&path=

Buckle up.

If I remember correctly --- that was the first game that Greenville switched to the system. IWU didn't know they would be playing that style until the JV game immediately preceding the varsity game.
