Unbelievably entertaining game.

In regulation chrishawn Orange takes it full court with 3 seconds on the clock to tie game in regulation.

Stats to come.

The difference in the game was fouls and free throws.

Augustana was whistled for 33 fouls giving Oshkosh a 45-28 advantage at the line.  Although Oshkosh didn't shoot a great percentage from the line (69%), it was enough to give them an 11 pt advantage from the stripe, which IMO ultimately decided the game.  The Oshkosh bigs and backcourt were the aggressors from the start and Augustana looked to have a hangover from the week off and trailed from the start but were able to slowly climb back from a double digit deficit and actually take a lead late in the game before Oranges heroics at the buzzer.  Oshkosh was able to hit enough FTs at end of second OT to secure the win.

Augustana has been real sound defensively thus far this year, and that will continue with their size, athleticism and depth which will keep them in most games.  Even with the loss of Wofford, they are a very good team with good experienced back court and will continue to develop as the year progresses.

Back from trip to Bloomington,  as Q noted Carthage played well.  This was a sort of a coulda, woulda ,shoulda game for IWU.  you can point to one of three or four things that had the Titans been a little sharper you have W rather than an L.

Carthage earned the win. A hard fought game yet only 14 turnovers between the two teams.  A classic Bosko coaching job - just maybe one of his best.  He had his team ready, threw some curves defensively and did a super job managing the game - hit the brakes when he needed to slow the game down and stepped on the gas when he needed to speed things up.

I would add at least one more (big) difference.
Augie had 35 rebounds. Oshkosh had 48.
With a lineup that could be mistaken for the Sequoia National Forest, Augie should never get out-rebounded by 13. That certainly had play a role in the UWO win.

Not really unexpectedly, North Central downed NPU by a fairly sizable margin Sat night.
The Cardinals were led by Connor Raridon with 26 points, Alex Sorenson with a double-double of 22 pts and 15 boards, and Erwin Henry with 18 pts.
Perhaps the most noteworthy point with regard to this game was the assist to turnover ratios of several of the players.

For NCC;

Connor Raridon - 7 Assists, 1 TO
Mike Pollack - 5 Assists, 0 TOs
Erwin Henry - 5 Assists, 1 TO
Aiden Chang - 4 Assists, 0 TOs
Blaise Meredith - 4 Assists, O TOs

For NPU;

Jack Gurvey - 4 Assists, 0 TOs
Billy Kirby - 3 Assists, 0 TOs

The teams had only 15 TOs combined. 7 by NCC, 8 by NPU

The Cardinals will certainly need to limit their turnovers vs. Augie Wed night. In addition, they must rebound with Grey's guys.

Not that it means anything, but here's a vote for NPU's Colin Lake for all conference. I hope he gets enough votes that count. I think he deserves a spot.

Oshkosh goes big like 6'8" 6'u" and then 6'o" off the bench.

Yeah, no question.  As I mentioned, Oshkosh were the aggressors from the start which gave them advantage on the boards.  When I watched the game the rebound differential didn't stick out, it was the hand and reach fouls that really showed. It was about moving your feet hence my hangover comment.  All three of the Augustana guards got into foul trouble, along with the bigs.  You can see that they are really tinkering with their lineup with the loss of Wofford.  Ferguson started his first game last weekend and played pretty well and started again this weekend was a non factor and Martin off the bench played a great game.

Benning starting his second game at the four is still learning that role and five of his seven shots were in the paint and he struggled.  Those paint touches would have been Woffords who has the post moves to score.  Benning would try to score over his defender.  He needs to develop a few post moves as a lefty to get his defender moving.  That will be IMHO the challenge of the coaches.  He's too talented not to put up double digit points as a starter.  Benning who is 6'6 and long, did grab 5 boards which may have been a career high. Seems to be work in progress.

Aston Francis, this week's CCIW POW on 2 terrific performances.  Congratulations.

Regarding a topic which, between the CCIW football and basketball boards, we have seen quite a bit of discussion about recently..............

Heard from a friend who is both a graduate of, and former athlete at, frequent CCIW opponent Benedictine, that the BU Board will soon meet to discuss/decide on moving forward with the process of formally moving from D3 to D2.
If BU decides to move, I wonder how long the process takes. Could force several CCIW teams to begin finding another non-conference opponent. Especially for teams like NCC who plays BU in basketball each year. Not looking forward to giving up that nice quick 2.9 mile trip up Chicago/Maple Ave.  :(

They're not too much further from Aurora University.

You could also have just read what I posted on the soccer boards ... or the NACC basketball board. LOL

Yes, Benedictine Board is meeting this week and on the agenda is whether to file paperwork to transition to DII. Any school interested has to complete the paperwork by early January if they want to start the process the next academic year. Then DII/NCAA has to accept or decline the application. If accepted, the process is exactly the same as any program coming to DIII. It starts a four-year process and each year means something else. Screw one of those years up and you repeat the year.

From what I have been told, no one is sure what the Board is thinking. They have not given any hints as to which direction they are leaning. I think there are many within the department who do not want to leave DIII - but that is just my gut talking. Some have told me the president wants a feather in his cap. Others said that there are alums willing to help foot the significant additional to the athletic budget (including making sure facilities are up to snuff).

Several DIIIs have done this in our history. Some have failed miserably and come back to the fold. Others have just flat out disappeared.

I am not sure why but I am fascinated by the business of sports.

I am sure this has been mentioned before in the other forums, but the fact that the GLVC lost a member last year makes this an opportune time to make the move.

I was surprised when Maryville University (MO) left for Division II years ago (it seemed to make more sense for NAIA McKendree and Lindenwood), but Maryville has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade and they claim the move to Division II was key to their growth.

That story is not new, but the Maryville story was a big one over the last year or two because their admissions yield have been above the norm.

Benedictine could add a few of those sports without the move, but they could also follow the lead of McKendree who added water polo, power lifting, bass fishing...
