The 'jays had a three-point lead going into the final five minutes, but then the Titans found another gear while the EC engine went into a stall.

John Baines takes the early lead in coaching disqualifications, as he was ushered out of the gym in the final minute.

Elmhurst put up a helluva battle in B'town, even leading 71-68 late.  Then Brady Rose and company went on a 16-0 run (10 of them by Brady).  Coach Baines totally lost it late, getting 2 Ts and heading to the lockerroom early.  Titans win it with a deceptively 'easy-looking' 87-75 win.  Brady Rose finished with 35 pts; Colin Bonnett added 23.

OT final from Keating:

Illinois Tech 86
Carthage 80

I had a feeling that this was going to be the best game of the night, and it was.

Too bad that Millikin faded late out of what had been a competitive game in Rock Island, as a win for the Big Blue would've given IIT head coach Todd Kelly (a Millikin alumnus and former North Central assistant) the rare CCIW trifecta.

* Brady Rose: 35 pts, 10-17 FG, 5-8 3-point, 10-11 FT
* Colin Bonnett: 23 pts, 8-12 FG, 5-6 3-point, 2-2 FT
* Jaylen Beasley: 10 pts, 7 reb
* Jason Gregoire: 6 pts, 5 reb, 4 assists

* Jeremy Ireland: 22 pts, 8 reb
* Justin Fox: 11 pts
* Jake Rhode: 10 pts, 2 reb, 8 assists

This game was a real grind. The Titans were carried down the stretch by Colin Bonnett and Brady Rose. Elmhurst is very talented and will give a lot of teams trouble.

Brady Rose is as complete of a guard as you will find in Division III.  He's developed into a 1st Team All-American candidate.

Augustana 66
Millikin 49

Millikin led 31-30 early in the 2nd half after a couple Juwan Stewart baskets.  Stewart, one of Millikin's JC transfers, had only played briefly in a blowout earlier, now seeing major PT at NPU and starting at Augie tonight.  The Big Blue offense just went off the rails from that point-strange player combos-all 3 available big men at one point, all 3 point guards at another; the right people just weren't taking the right shots, and that's compounded against an experienced defense.  Why, Augustana's defense was SO good, only one Millikin player shot any foul shots (6) until 5 minutes remained in the game; then ONE other Blue player joined him.  Millikin outrebounded Augie 36-26, but, in the spirit of cultural exchange were apparently observing Greek Orthodox Christmas or something, with 23 gifts/turnovers.  Augie was hot from 3 @ 50% (Sortillo 5-5) and not at FT, also 50%.  Another quirk-a LOT of moving screen-type calls made in the top-of-the-key neighborhood, both teams.  North Central visits Decatur Wednesday.

Augustana missed 12 of 25 free throws.  That's the story.    ;)

Wheaton made more shots than NPU attempted tonight. That covers this one tonight from King Arena. Aston made some threes from Glen Ellyn, Luke Peters made a three tonight (!), and Kobe with another solid game to continue his tear as of late. NPU almost seemed as if they didn't want to play tonight. Lake is a heckuva player, but I couldn't find a single guy that could legitimately support him tonight. Large win is good going into next week's matchup in Rock Island, hoping for my Thunder to come out with the upset, but we'll need a game on par with how we played against Whitworth, which is definitely possible and we'll see soon enough if the squad is ready to play with the defending National Runner-Up.

Final from Waukesha:

North Central 73
Carroll 54

This was not as close as the final score seems to indicate. Todd Raridon had his bench in for a good long time at the end of the game. Carroll didn't hit its first trey until the final three minutes.

NCC led by 34 with around 8 minutes left, at which time Raridon began substituting liberally. Every player who traveled over the state line saw PT.
Carroll scored only 17 points in the first half.

Erwin Henry led the Cardinals, and was the game high scorer, with 16 points. He hit 7 of 8 incl 4 of 4 from three.
Alex Sorenson had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Mike Pollack had 13 points.
Connor Raridon with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, ZERO TOs

NCC shot 49.1% compared to Carroll's 32.6%

Carroll Coach Combs, who was an absolute wild man when CU played at NCC last year, was a model of decorum tonight. Perhaps a year + in the CCIW has mellowed him? 😉

* With his 16 points tonight, Erwin Henry now has 1,002 for his career. He becomes the 26th North Central player to score at least 1,000 points. CONGRATS E!

Tough loss for Elmhurst. They were 0-11 from downtown in the first half and finished 4-19 on the night. Wesleyan were very successful from beyond the arc, 13-21.

Elmhurst played very well for the first 15 minutes of the second half, and put themselves in a position to win, but as mentioned, faltered down the stretch. Still plenty of positive takeaways for Elmhurst and despite the loss I feel better about their ability to be competitive in this league.

And well you should be!  For much of the game my only reason for thinking IWU was the better team was "because, of course, they should be".  Elmhurst put up a helluva fight until Brady Rose donned his Superman cape (and Coach Baines suffered a total meltdown, though that just exaggerated the final margin; he didn't 'lose it' until the game was already over).

Good summary Q.  I couldn't watch tonight -- had to be in a conference here.

When the Titans shoot 62% from three, you know it's likely to be a pretty good night.  The Titans would be hard to beat.  Sounds like a great run, with key plays, key leadership down the stretch by Rose and Bonnett.

That big win over Augie is going to loom larger and larger.

Congrats to Brady Rose on CCIW Player of the Week honors.  Well-deserved after two great performances this last week in the wins over #2 Augie and EC.

Keep it rolling, TITANS.
