I wasn't the only person who was disappointed with it, either, as a North Park faculty member went out of his way to tell me last week that he wrote a letter to the president of Illinois Wesleyan University expressing his disgust with Knobloch's actions.

I am sorry, but I hate everything about this part of the post.

I'll say though that I am not all that surprised as this is where we are headed in higher education.  Oh, you didn't like something?  Offended?  Solution: appeal to the authorities for a resolution.

The professor could have just as easily e-mailed Knobloch directly to discuss (his e-mail is most certainly in a public directory) or written a letter to the basketball program with a c/o.  The professor passed on a teachable moment.

What on earth would the President of a University do about this anyway? Poor choice by that faculty member

What bothered me about how the officials responded was that they disregarded his obvious intent. It's one thing to commit a hard foul, and it's another thing altogether to knock a player to the floor and then stand over him for several seconds, glaring down at him with a macho, "Yeah, I've just put you on your ass. Whaddya gonna do about it?" look. The officials didn't respond to that at all, which disappointed me because it not only left open the potential for that provocation to turn into something worse, it also revealed the intent behind the foul itself. They didn't even come over right away to intervene (my initial worry was that this incident would bring somebody off of the NPU bench, as it took place right in front of that part of the sideline); they waited until Jason Hines had walked over and brushed past Knobloch as a bodyguard gesture before they scrambled over towards the NPU bench and separated the players. Given that context, the intent behind the hard foul by Knobloch on Lake under the west basket after Josh Washburn's steal at about the 5:00 mark of the second half should've been obvious.

Just watched that play. Starts at about 30:25...

Didn't Lake kick Knobloch? Isn't that what Knobloch stared at him for? Instead of "Yeah, I've just put you on your ass. Whaddya gonna do about it?" wasn't it more "Why TF did you just kick me?"

You 100% sure you are describing this accurately/fairly?

I can't believe that was the play we have had pedantic conversation about.

Two kids were a little heated during a game, bumped each other and gave each other the look. Knoblach didn't even stand over him. He walked around him and got away immediately, while giving him the look. So what, they are competitors. This isn't "Goon Ball" in my eyes. If it happened more frequently maybe I would be worried. Reading the quotes it sounds like their is no bad blood between the two players, they moved on...

"Bumped each other"? Watch it again. One tackled the other, albeit in the context of trying to steal the ball. And to see the full context of what's behind this, you need to see Knobloch's shove of Lake at the 1:14:22 mark in the second half.

CCIW must be a softer league  than it used to be.

Fake news.

Upset alert.  MU way up on WC with about 9 minutes to go, in Decatur.

Mr. Ypsi

No upset in Bloomington.  Titans up by 35; both benches have long since emptied.

Another surprise?  Carthage up by 4 w/ 65 seconds remaining in Rock Island.

iwu70

Well, some of us said MU had the talent if they could put it all together, play more together.  Looks like something came together tonight vs. WC.  Big time.

What 's with the Augie game?  A forfeit?

IWU over NPU in a blowout -- 87-47.  The Titans hitting on all cylinders, playing good D too.  No thugs to be seen.

Rose 22
Gregoire another strong game 11
Knobloch 10
Bonnett 8
Baker, strong off the bench, 8 and 6
Beasley rebounding well, struggling offensively.

For NPU:

Kirby 12
Lake 11, held out of the game for more minutes than usual?

Titans keep their lead in the CCIW race.  Big game Wednesday at Carver.

IWU 87, NPU 47

Billy Kirby: 12 pts, 3:0 a:to
Colin Lake: 11 pts
Matt Szuba: 7 rebs

Brady Rose: 22 pts, 3:1 a:to
Jason Gregoire: 11 pts
Zach Knobloch: 10 pts
Charlie Bair: 9 rebs
Jaylen Beasley: 6 rebs
Danny Baker: 6 rebs
Grant Wolfe: 3:0 a:to

When you have a small team and you play a five-out look, you're not going to get offensive rebounds. So the only way you can prevent a constant series of one-and-dones is to hit the open shots you get, and to force the action with dribble penetration. Unfortunately, NPU doesn't shoot well most nights, and tonight the dribble penetration either went nowhere, as there were no players open for kickouts (the Titans guards did a great job of staying home), or resulted in blown shots at the rim. That meant long scoring droughts tonight for NPU, one of them about five minutes long early in the second half, and once the Titans got hot from beyond the arc the game completely got away from NPU ... leading once again to Tom Slyder taking Colin Lake and Billy Kirby off the floor early and holding open tryouts for future playing time, which translated in about four or five of the less-experienced Vikings playing rec league ball and missing every shot they heaved up.

This was a classic illustration of why one of these teams is in first place and the other one is now all alone in the cellar.

No, this is the second straight game in which Lake and Kirby were yanked early while Tom Slyder held what I've called "open tryouts".

When's the last time that Augie was outrebounded by 11 by another CCIW team at Carver?

Carthage beats Augie at Carver.  Wheaton goes down in Decatur.

It's a great day to be a Titan.  :)
