North Central beat Wheaton, 68-58.

Considering what happened at the end of the game, the result of the game is not important.

Routine play 1:13 to go; NCC up 13.  Aiden Chang jumped to challenge an Aston Francis three, landed, and his leg just buckled - Gordon Hayward-style.  Really nasty.  Very sad to watch his reaction and that of his teammates and the opponents.  It took 10-15 minutes to get him treated and off the court, then the two teams just held the ball, trading shot clock violations until time expired.

Very sad to hear.  Hope he can be treated well, quickly, and recover fully.  Sending support to Aiden and his teammates and family.

North Central at Wheaton ended in a terrible way. With 1:19 to go Aiden Chang went down to the floor after trying to block an Aston Francis trey attempt, and his condition was serious enough that there was medical staff out on the floor working on him. The broadcast cut away to filler while he was attended to. I missed the re-commencement of the broadcast, which took place about ten minutes later, because I was watching CU @ IWU, but the North Central and Wheaton players weren't playing. They simply held the ball until the shot clock ran out, then handed it to the other team, which did the same. It really felt like the right thing to do for both teams, considering the seriousness of Chang's condition. A basketball game just isn't that important. The Cardinals, in particular, really looked shook up.

Up until that point, it had been a really compelling second half to watch. NCC had been torrid from beyond the arc in the opening stanza while the Schauerites couldn't hit a shot to save their lives. The Cards led by 31 at 47-16 with under two minutes to go in the first half.

Wheaton made one of the most spirited comeback attempts I've seen in a good long while, and the amazing thing is that they did it despite a poor shooting night from Aston Francis, and with Luke Peters saddled with four fouls. Wheaton whittled the NCC lead down to eight with 5:25 to go. But that's as close as WC could get, as they collectively ran out of gas and started missing all of their shots again, while the Cards clamped down on the boards.

The best player on the floor tonight wasn't Aston Francis. It was Connor Raridon.

I sure hope Chang's condition isn't as serious as it looked.

WOW - I did NOT see that one coming!  Anyone wanting to bet on Carroll (winless in the conference coming into the Shirk) I would have willingly spotted 12-15 points!  Defense was very porous tonight - especially against Tyler Ingebrigtsen, who according to the announcers averaged 7 points a game and finished with TWENTY-SEVEN. :o  (That matched Brady Rose for game scoring honors; have Tyler and Brady ever been mentioned in the same sentence before?!)  The Titans also got EXTREMELY sloppy late in the game, making unforced turnovers time after time.

A season which started VERY promising (as high as #8 in the national poll) is threatening to swirl down the toilet.  I am NOT throwing in the towel, but they had better regroup very quickly. :(

EDIT: Just saw the posts about Aiden Chang - somehow the Titan meltdown tonight seems far less important.  Get well soon, young man.

The arena had been at a full-throated roar to that point.  Wheaton's stream cut away to promos during the injury, and when it returned, the arena was deathly quiet.

Credit to the Wheaton broadcast team for tactfully handling the situation and not queuing up a barrage of replays of the injury.

I won't attempt to diagnose what happened, but it looked really bad.

Tyler Ingebrigtsen, your table is ready.
27 points 7 rebounds 4 assists 11-16 FGs not a bad night for Tyler Ingebritsen. Titans had no defensive answer for him.

It didn't look to me like the Titans had a defensive answer for anybody who was wearing an orange jersey.

The video is available on Wheaton's site now.  I won't recommend anyone watch it, but 1:23:39.  The injury itself isn't really that visible, but the reactions of everyone around it are tough to watch.

Fair observation!  With a significant height advantage, IWU should have been able to pound the ball inside and did not.  With Ingebrigtsen hot, the Titan guarding him should have never left him but did repeatedly.

It looks like it's been removed. In my experience with sites like Livestream, there's usually a couple minutes where it sits in a processing queue and you can't really do anything to it. I'm guessing that was the case there.

Pretty gruesome and severe ankle break I'm afraid, and let's just say everyone within 75 feet could tell.  Players on both sides were shaken - gym totally silent while the training staff did what they could waiting for an ambulance to arrive.  Schauer and Raridon did the right thing by just running out the clock under the circumstances.

Alot of Thunder fans are praying for Aiden Chang and his family who were all there.

A surreal and unfortunate ending to the NCC vs. Wheaton game. The injury to Aiden Chang was the worst I've ever seen in person. I was sitting behind the scorer's table and had a disturbingly clear view of the injury. The entire gym seemed to be rattled by what happened. It was silent for a long time while the training staff and medical personnel worked on him, waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Chang was in excruciating pain. Fortunately his parents were at his side as he was being worked on.

Players on both teams were visibly shaken by the injury. Several NCC players were in tears.

Credit to the athletic department at Wheaton and both coaching staffs for doing their best to take care of Chang. It seemed like it took forever for the ambulance to arrive. Players on both sides showed great sportsmanship and character tonight.

Very rough way to end a highly competitive game.

Thoughts and prayers for Aiden Chang and his family tonight. That's a terrible way to end your career. Hoping for a speedy and full recovery.
