IWU over EC 82-80

Rose 26
Wolfe 20 -- the difference in the game
Bair 9 and 7

EC:
Rhode 28
Dotlich 21
Ireland 15

Rhode is a ton.

Titans almost found another way to lose another one in the last minute, but luckily not.  A good win on the road.  We need every win we can get at this point.

IWU held on for dear life over Elmhurst, 82-80.  Titans were once up 70-58.

IWU now 11-6, back to .500 in the CCIW at 4-4.  One game at a time . . .

EC makes 12 treys, a perfect 20-20 from the charity stripe, still loses the game.  Amazing.  Rhode is top-flight, impossible to guard.

IWU lucky to get the road win, get out of town.

I thought IWU played very well tonight...especially considering it was a road game vs a good team.

Grant Wolfe was awesome for IWU.  Scored 16 points in the final 13 minutes of the game, made 6-6 FTs down the stretch in tight moments, and just made so many big plays.

Brady Rose had a great game too and made the biggest shot of the game for IWU.  Tied at 76 with 40 seconds to play, he made a very difficult 19 foot jumpshot to put IWU up 2.

IWU's season could completely turn around with a win Saturday at home vs #2-Augustana.

Rounding out tonight's action:

Red Birds 67, Red Men 63 at the Airplane Hangar.

We are now making the turn as we have reached the halfway point of the conference schedule.

Augie 77 Wheaton 73 Final.

As mentioned, Wheaton needed to play well, near flawless, in all facets to pull off the upset.  Looking at the box this morning(missed the game, traveling), 14-5 Augie advantage on offensive glass, and 17 turnovers for the Thunder leading to 25 second chance AC points.  17 more shot attempts (71 vs 54) for the blue team while free throws were even with 24 each.  Tough to score more points if you let your opponent shoot 30% more shots.  Not flawless.

Looks like Francis struggled some in the 1st h but had a better 2nd h which mirrored the contribution from the others- solid 1st, very little 2nd.

One thing that stood out to my was Augie shot 36% from the floor. It was a combination of tough D, 8 blocked shots, and a bunch of in the paint shots missed by Augie. Martin and Ferguson went a combined 4-15.  Augie only had 1 blocked shot in the stats, but in the 2nd half there was an instance where Benning had blocked / impacted a couple of shots in a 3 minute stretch that doesn't appear in the box score.

With Wheaton down 1 they elected to foul with 21 seconds left in the game even though Augie couldn't run out the clock. The possession started with 34 seconds left. Orange hit 1 of 2 free throws to push the lead back to 2.  It wasn't surprising who was going to take the last shot for Wheaton, but to take a contested corner 3 that was a tough shot even for superman with 13 seconds left seemed surprising.  Even if he makes it, that leaves more than enough time for Augie to come back down the floor (aka against Carthage in the previous game) to win the game.

Overall very entertaining game, and scary when it's a 1 possession game and #1 has the ball in his hands.

Bummer for Elmhurst. They clawed back to tie it up late after being down 12 minutes earlier. Titans out rebounded Elmhurst significantly, 39-22, creating a sizeable difference in second chance points. Great efforts from Rhode, Ireland, Dotlich, and Perry, but Wesleyan too balanced and experienced on the other end.

Elmhurst on a 4 game losing streak. Yesterday was probably the best 40 minutes they played within the losing streak.  However, at 4-4 in CCIW they're still very much in the race for Top 6.

Fwiw, with Wheaton trailing by 2 in the final seconds, Francis appeared to be fouled on a 3-point attempt. No call. Augie secured the rebound, got fouled, and made both free throws.

Greek Tragedy

Doesn't look like a foul. They're just holding hands.

I think Augie fans could probably make some screen shots too from last night's game though.  I watched a good portion of the game out of the corner of my eye (while watching IWU/EC) and just kept thinking, "Wow they are really letting them play at Wheaton."  There were a few plays on Augie's end with a lot of contact with no whistle.

Obviously natural to zero in on that one huge shot attempt...but you also have to look at the context of the entire game.

With just under 2 minutes to go, there was a similar situation where Francis got the call shooting a 3, and converted the 4 point play to cut the lead from 6 down to 2.

Augie does have a tendency to foul jump shooters, it happened at least 4 times during the Elmhurst game.

Hand's part of the ball.

... except that there's no ball. Francis has already released it.

That "really letting them play" scenario almost always works in Augie's favor, though, because more often than not Augie is the most physical team in the league.

OK, Augie fans, time to see your screen shots. We've got two more days until the next set of games, and that's a lot of time to kill. ;)
