Anyone recall CCIW basketball games getting called off before for temperature alone?  (If MIAA games are being postponed, I haven't heard it.)

This is a first since I've been around. Snow postponements? Sure, they're nothing new. Postponement due to frigid weather? Nope.

Greg.were you living in Burgh Hall in '84 during a cold snap that was actually worse than what is forecast for tomorrow?  I had a resident come down to the RD apartment to tell me his room was cold.  I asked him if that might be expected with a -80 wind chill factor. He said he wan't sure.  I don't remember his name, but he might not either any more.

I thought that was January 25, 1985, the current coldest day in Chicago History. -27 with -80 wind chill. I remember it well. It was Super Bowl Sunday and we had to watch the 49ers destroy Dan Marino's Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium. I went outside 1x that day and it was a mistake.

I lived in Burgh in '84. I do not remember the temp being so low though I was born and raised in MN.  Certainly did not miss class due to cold weather.  On business, I went to Bemidji MN years ago in February.  Without windchill, when I filled the car with gas en route to the airport; the temp was -40.  Uff da!!

A good friend of mine used to be a college coach in North Dakota near Fargo where traveling to away games in negative temps are not uncommon.  Up there, -5 is "puck drop" and -15 is "game time!".  He since came to his senses, took his wife's threats seriously, and took another position further south.

I think postponing 24 hrs was the right thing to do.  But how far does the caution go?  The forecast at Carroll in Waukesha at 7pm Wednesday -16.  Thursday at 7?  -8.

One thing that I definitely can say is that starting one's college coaching career with a side assignment as the RD in Burgh Hall, there was no way to go but up professionally!  You can all thank me for the moderating influence that I had on Greg when he was an impressionable young man. One of my prouder achievements.

Both of my parents grew up about an hour south of Fargo and moved to suburban Chicago in the mid-80's. I think my favorite story of their move here was one of them apartment hunting and asking where you plug in your car, prompting a ton of confusion. Given my bloodline, I try not to complain too much about winter in Chicago, because I know it can be worse. My dad has since said he wouldn't be able to handle the winters up there anymore, and considering the low there tonight is supposed to be -34... I don't blame him.

I don't know what the wind chill is supposed to be and if that plays any role. And I'm sure the schools don't want to push back any farther than they have to.

GoP,

What you're forgetting is the wind chill. 💨
7 PM Wed -16 with a wind chill of -36.
7 PM Thurs -7 with a wind chill of "only" -9!  ;)

I remember that weekend well. I was a junior at NCC and we were stuck indoors for for three days. Unfortunately my car was the only one that would start and I had to to make the harrowing trip to SavWay liquors with brakes too frozen to function. I'm glad NCC is attracting smarter students these days.

North Central will also be closed beginning at 7:00 tonight through at least early Thursday morning.

Naperville temps are expected to reach their lowest point tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM when the actual temperature is predicted to be -23 with a wind chill of -51. At 8:00 PM the numbers are expected to be -19, and -41.

Stay warm and remember, as Major Anya Amasova advised James Bond, shared bodily warmth. 😯

Stay safe over there everyone.  Brutal.  Just don't go outside.  Balmy 40s by the weekend.

Looking at -15 and wind chills -45 here in Ann Arbor area.  My vote would be to bag Thursday and find a way to reschedule. Or, bag Thursday, let regular season run out and have a play in game if CCIW needs one to determine six teams for tournament.

Remember, that can have an adverse affect on teams for at-large bids and bracketing. Augustana v NCC is a big game that really needs to be played. And more times than not, those games will be needed. The idea of not playing them isn't the greatest idea.

Reschedule, sure ... but it's probably going to take rescheduling another set of games so that you go Tue, Thur, Sat ... or through a Monday game in there. And teams have to deal with transportation changes, how this affects classes, etc. Might be best to stick with Thursday.

Not playing is an option with a playin game if needed for conference tournament.  Reschedule a preferred option.  Risking health of players and fans to play Thursday  - not an option from where I sit.
