Unfortunately, Spencer Peterson tore an ACL. His college athletics career is over.

That sucks.

Horrible news... Having been to both the IWU game and the game today against NCC, Spencer's intensity and leadership on the sidelines couldn't have gone unnoticed. He plays with such passion and goes all out every snap he's on the field. He also provided much needed size on the court, and a much improved jumper. His athleticism and competitive spirit will be missed on the gridiron and the hardwood. A torn UCL ended my athletics career, so I know exactly how Spencer Peterson feels right now... and you are right. It really sucks...

Wow – that's truly terrible news for Spencer Peterson who won't quite get the senior year that I'm sure he was greatly anticipating.  He had to be very disappointed that injury forced him out of the Augie game, missed Marietta, and only 3 or 4 mins vs UWO in the FF.  And now this while playing a key part of the FB team.  I feel for him.

Any truth to the rumor that after yesterday's game Mike Schauer was seen coaching Luke Anthony on how to slide . . .? ::)

As the first team All Conference squad is composed of 8 players, you need to make another selection.

He left that last spot out on purpose in homage to Spencer Peterson.  8-)

By the way, how is Connor Raridon still playing. Isn't he like 30 yrs old by now?

The "way" that Connor is still playing stems from the fact that North Central has a graduate level business school. This affords him the opportunity to use his medical hardship year to complete his fourth and final year of eligibility. It's a shame that Wheaton lacks such a graduate business school program that Spencer could possibly take advantage of if he was so inclined.

In reality, the question becomes more of a mystery when players spend a fifth year at a school that doesn't offer grad classes in their major field.

Incidentally, Connor is only 29. He won't hit the 30 mark until next spring.  8-)

Why does the injury demon so often seem to strike just before or early in a young athlete's senior season? It really is a shame when a young guy loses the chance to enjoy what will almost be his last year of formal/school competition. Some guys are fortunate enough to be able to use a graduate level program to finish out their eligibility, and I can appreciate the added sting felt by students like Spencer who do not enjoy this possibility. With Wheaton football fortunes currently riding a high it's too bad Spencer can't complete the journey with his teammates. And, while the Orange may not enjoy the same degree of success on the hardwood this season as on the gridiron, I'm sure a guy who appears as competitive as Mr. Peterson was looking forward to being a part of the action. Hopefully he can find some solace in the success of his teammates in both sports. While not able to be an active participant in the rest of the football season or the basketball season, I'm sure he will remain part of both teams, and his continued presence will be be an asset to both squads.
Good luck to Spencer throughout his treatment, rehab, and hopeful full recovery.

With the graduation of Ebel & Orange, plus Benning,  the distinct possibility exists that the Augie attack will switch from being primarily outside orientated to being more focused on interior strength. If such is the case, Martin will be cast as the lead. Accordingly, it is quite likely we'll see a fairly dramatic upswing in his offensive output. Those additional points, plus his already imposing defensive presence, will no doubt draw both increased attention and likely additional support as far as possible All Conference recognition is concerned.

Additionally, should Augie finish second, tradition shows the second place team stands an excellent chance of garnering two spots on the first team.  :D

My prediction for this year's All-CCIW 1st Team...

- Kienan Baltimore (F/Carthage), 6-5/223 Sr.

- Matt Cappelletti (F/North Central), 6-5/210 Sr.

- Calvin Fisher (G/Millikin), 6-6/200 So.

- Micah Martin (C/Augustana), 6-11/240 Sr.

- Connor Raridon (F/North Central), 6-6/215 Sr. (Most Outstanding Player)

- Jake Rhode (G/Elmhurst), 5-10/165 Jr.

- Doug Wallen (F/Illinois Wesleyan), 6-5/210 Jr.

- Pierson Wofford (F/Augustana), 6-4/202 Sr.

I respectfully submit that the one glaring omission from this list is North Central's 6-4/180 Jr., Blaise Meredith. Blaise was 2nd Team All-Conference last year, and I can assure anyone reading this that he hasn't gotten worse since last year. Should he not achieve first team status this season, I think the only reason will be an aversion by the coaches to place 3 players from the same school on the first team. However, they weren't adverse to naming 3 Augie players last year.
Millikin's Fisher is a fast rising star. But no way does he match Meredith's combination of athleticism and skill. Also, if MU finishes near the bottom of the pack, I think this makes it far less likely they place a player on the first team.

Another player who I believe is worthy of first team status is Elmhurst's 6-3 220 pound Derek Dotlich.
Last year he hit 48% of his shots including 45% from three. He was 11th in FG%, 8th in 3 point percentage, 14th in scoring at 12.8 PPG, and 17th in rebounding. The problem, of course, is who you take off to open a spot for Dotlich. There is no obvious choice.

Other players meriting consideration are Carroll's Nick Perry, also a second team choice last year, and the Carthage duo of Jason Kedrowski, and 6'10" Sean Johnson who finished first last season in both FG%, and blocked shots, and who is the conference's leading defensive player.

Please pardon the short interruption in our usual sports centered discussion....................

While it will probably cost me a ding or two, I, as other posters in the same situation in the past have been, am unable to contain myself. Accordingly, I'm overjoyed to report that my better half and I became grandparents just after 10:00 this morning when our DIL Nealy and son Mike welcomed a beautiful granddaughter. Scarlett Everly Anderson arrived at 7 lbs + 13 ozs., and measuring 19 1/2 inches.  8-)

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.  :)

Mr. Ypsi

Mark, I offered congrats on the fb board, in case you've been too busy to check in again.

BTW, Mrs. Y and I met all four grandkids when they were less than 24 hours old - have you met Scarlet yet?

AndOne

Yes sir. We were in the family waiting area when she was born (C-Section) then got to go up and hold her about 2 hours later after DIL was transferred from Recovery up to her room. 😊

augie77
