Incidentally, for anyone wondering why IWU was so delayed in switching completely to D3, there were two main reasons.  First (and probably most crucially) it was respect for Jack Horenberger, who was a 'founding father' of the NAIA - if I remember the time-line correctly, they dropped the NAIA affiliation soon AFTER Coach Horenberger's death.  Secondly, Kansas City was one helluva great tourney - 16 teams all in town for a straight-thru party 'til only one team remained standing!  In 1970 we had the misfortune of playing eventual champion Kentucky State in the first game; we can take comfort that we gave them a closer game than anyone else!

My texters/e-mailers are also taking exception with Chuck.

The NAIA tournament was 32 teams...not 16.  Here is the 1969-70 bracket - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_NAIA_Men%27s_Basketball_Tournament#1970_NAIA_bracket.

Carry on.

IWU's mid 70's star Jack Sikma was a non-scholarship member! IMO one of the best ever in the CCIW!

I wish that the fact that the IWU posters and lurkers here have turned into a circular firing squad was an omen that tonight will bode well for NPU.

Alas, it isn't, and it won't.

F - Karl Polk Jr., 6-6/210 Jr.  11.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg

His name aside, Karl Polk, Jr. is a freshman, not a junior ... and a very pleasant surprise as one, I might add. He had some mid-December struggles, but since Tom Slyder has given him starter's minutes beginning with the Rockford game he has been very solid for the most part. The emergence of Polk is a bright spot in a dismal season for the Vikings.

Sure. He waited until the game when I'm picking against Carthage in the national pick'em league to suit up again.

I'm trying not to take it personally.

Well, let's see how much he plays!  Not in the starting lineup

Baltimore in at the 12 minute mark. First shot was blocked from three point range and next play he had a turnover.  Carthage playing well otherwise and up 21 to 14

You know,Q, when you are approaching your 50th reunion, the mind, the memory gets a bit fuzzy . . . so please have mercy on Ypsi and me.  We try to remember as best we can . . . and I sure some embellishment and wishful thinking memory comes into play.   What was your name again???   :)

Those trips to Kansas City were grand. That we can all remember clearly and happily.  KC first, Salem later . . .

And I never even made it to KC! :(

I think a part of me knew KC was 32 teams, but somehow I typed 16 - mea culpa.  Yes, the memory is not what it once was.

Mr. Ypsi

Greg, congrats to your Vikings - that was NOT a blow-out despite the final score!  I couldn't breathe comfortably until about 3 minutes left.

Final was IWU 70, NPU 56 - but it was a MUCH closer game than that.

Illinois Wesleyan 70
North Park 56

Karl Polk, Jr.: 19 pts, 6 rebs
Toby Marek: 12 pts
Matt Szuba: 11 rebs, 4:1 a:to

Doug Wallen: 16 pts, 9 rebs
Luke Yoder: 15 pts, 6 rebs, 4:2 a:to
Keondre Schumacher: 15 pts
Charlie Bair: 11 rebs
Matt Leritz: 6 rebs

Didn't get to watch this one, of course, but I kept glancing at the live stats tab while I called the NPU women's game, and it appeared that the Vikings were very competitive before fading late. Another impressive night for Karl Polk.
