Yes, this thought has occurred to me as well. I didn't think that it was a coincidence that the first wave of schools that announced that they were closing down their campuses were state universities and well-endowed private institutions. Those are the schools with the resources to absorb this kind of financial shock.

I think that is exactly right.  The schools with less cushion are certainly holding out hope that they are small enough, or in some cases, isolated enough, that they can keep going.

Indeed, this comes at the worst possible time for some institutions already struggling with decreased enrollment and and growing budget deficits.

As long as you finish out the instruction on line and grant the academic credits then there's no need to refund tuition.  Your non-academic auxiliaries on the other hand could cost quite a bit if you need to refund room and board for 1/2 a semester.  That could be a big time nut to cover, several $$M potentially.  And not to be ignored is relied upon summer conference and camp revenue for many campus facilities.  Lots of uncertainty on that.

WUPHF

That is so true.  For a lot of institutions, the on-campus housing operations are a money-maker.  But I did not think about the summer housing and conference season.

Kansas (merely the #1 team in the country) has suspended all home/away contests and all athletics related travel.  Duke basically same thing.

Not that it will ultimately matter, but the KU statement specifically says "this statement does not mean KU has withdrawn from the NCAA Tournament, if it is played."

Fine by me.  To make it this far and not even get the chance...At least they got to play their season 90% out, unlike the baseball and softball teams.

And with that, the 2019-20 seasons have come to a sudden end.

What a week it has been in college basketball. Exactly a week ago, as we hit the air, the first signs that COVID-19 was going to impact the NCAA Tournaments was seen. Since then, it has been a whirlwind.

Tonight on Hoopsville, we try and make sense of one of the stranger finishes in history for NCAA events. What started with isolated closings of gyms for games ends a week later in all games being called off through the rest of the academic year.

We will chat with those who were preparing for games on Friday and hear their reactions to the seasons coming to a close so quickly.

Guests Schedule (order subject to change):
- Michelle Ferenze, No. 10 Whitman women's coach
- John Krikorian, Christopher Newport men's coach

Elmhurst to go online starting Monday.

Congratulations to Elmhurst and North Central for tremendous seasons.   Wish they would have been able to play it out, but oh well.

Feel very badly for both the Blue Jays and Cardinals.  Both hosting this weekend also with great chances to get to FF.  Especially NCC with lots of seniors graduating.

voxelmhurst

Well, this was one of Elmhurst's greatest seasons of all-time. Impressed they could turn their fortunes around after that rough stretch in Feb, and win their first ever CCIW Tournament championship.

Saturday's game vs Pomona-Pitzer would have been the biggest ever game in the history of RA Faganel Hall. I feel bad for the seniors who have to see their careers end like this.

Stay healthy everyone!

Yep. It's truly a shame.

But the people for whom I feel the worst are the senior student-athletes who play spring sports. As disappointing as it is for the EC and NCC senior basketball players, at least they got in a full final season, even though they didn't get the ultimate resolution to it that they'd wanted. The spring-season seniors only got a fraction's worth of their final seasons.

At least the spring season players will almost certainly be given the OPTION of a 5th season (though at CCIW-school prices I'm not sure anyone will be interested).

I haven't heard anything like that being bandied about. It would be an equitable thing to do, but that doesn't mean that it's a fait accompli.
