I've also heard, especially for d3, the closure of campuses leaves those teams with no real support for the remaining weeks.  I still think they should've played the games this weekend, and that empty arenas would've been sufficient precautions, but there was no practical way to support remaining teams going forward.

I think that became untenable the moment an NBA player tested positive.

We're all going to get it.  Most of the players already have it.  Our extreme lack of testing is hampering our ability to deal with this.  One guy testing positive is freaking people out, but it's not actually a danger to other athletes.  We're way, way beyond containment at this point.  If they're in a closed system, they're not going to infect the general public.

The thing is, they're not in a closed system.  A team that plays a game in an empty gym is going to encounter people from the general public before, during, or after the game.  And the risk is that a symptomless carrier may interact with a fast food worker when the team stops on the way home, and she carries the virus home to the 79 year old mother she is caring for, not to mention anyone she comes in contact with in her job.  And that is where the risk of a fatality (the mother) or a faster spread of the virus gets really high.

So yes, it is unfortunate that the teams can't see through everything they've worked for this season.  But from a Kevin Bacon game standpoint, the social interactions of college students, particularly those who travel on behalf of the school, get you to a fairly broad swath of the population very quickly.  Limiting those interactions is important in slowing the rate at which the virus spreads.

But that's containment thinking.  From everything I've read, we needed to do containment measures (basically what we've been doing the last two days) weeks and weeks ago.  All the doctors seems to believe we're well beyond those things having any real effect.  It seems like we should be on an Italy-style lockdown if we really want to slow anything down and it doesn't seem like our society is ready for it just yet.

All of this, of course, is just speculation because we have no testing data.  That's the real crux.  I checked today - we have testing available locally, but only for people who have symptoms right now.  If we actually knew who was infected and where they are, we could make better decisions.

Again, it's not like what we've done is bad or unhelpful, but it's not likely to be super effective either.  The difference between playing games in empty arenas and not playing them (without other large scale quarantines) isn't much.  That's all I was trying to say.

My last contribution to the Great Coronavirus Debate of 2020, I swear...

On a macro-level, the too late to do something thesis holds water.

The Coronavirus is here and more than one poster will get it.

On a micro-level, the 79-year old grandmother example is unquestionably still the case according to Nicholas Christakas, MD, PhD, Professor at Yale and one world's foremost experts on networks, communities and human behavior still recommends social distancing.

I agree.  I was just trying to say the difference between playing the game without fans and not playing is pretty microscopic.

I was doing the math this morning for my area.  Delaware has about a third of one percent of the US population, although we do skew pretty heavily on the elderly side of things.  Even the most conservative estimates I've seen say about a million US deaths over the next year.  That translates to 3000-4000 deaths, largely among people over 70, in my tiny state.  That's a real number that's pretty shocking.

To think there's very little we can do to change that is quite sobering.  We're not used to that perspective; we're very accustomed to having options.

Here in Chicago I was geared today to attend the Waco Brothers concert at a very small venue, but it got cancelled.  Gigs through next Wednesday are "postponed" at The Hideout.  I guess I will be hunting for toilet paper for the less abled in the interim.

Good luck with that!  At our local generally well-stocked Kroger's (2 of them), today they were not only out of hand sanitizer and tp (as expected - they have been for at least a week), they were also out of eggs and ground beef.  MANY of their shelves looked awfully depleted.

Has there been a good reason all the NCAA tourneys couldn't just be postponed and played on college campuses?

I get the NCAA division 1 tourney is held at massive arenas and the Mercedes Area won't be available on x date.

But, Kansas's Gym will be available and can host for a weekend. Just let the highest seed host each weekend just like in D3 ball.

And D3 ball, why can we pick this tourney up in 2mo and let a D3 school host it.

What am I missing??

It sounds good in theory, but these athletes would need ample time to get back to game readiness after a layoff of a couple of months with no practice or strong competition.  Also, many campuses are closed to everyone but essential staff, so there is no place for the teams to practice.  A lot of athletes come from out of state and have probably gone home during the hiatus.

Gove em 2 weeks to practice and then play. Players will stay in shape on their own.
