Has there been a good reason all the NCAA tourneys couldn't just be postponed and played on college campuses?

I get the NCAA division 1 tourney is held at massive arenas and the Mercedes Area won't be available on x date.

But, Kansas's Gym will be available and can host for a weekend. Just let the highest seed host each weekend just like in D3 ball.

And D3 ball, why can we pick this tourney up in 2mo and let a D3 school host it.

What am I missing??

1. Campuses are, by and large, closed for the foreseeable future.

2. We have no idea when they will be re-opened, but I expect most will not for this academic year if we get back to more of a status quo with only a few weeks left in the term, which seems to be best-case at this point.

3. There would need to be workable solutions for all sports -- not just basketball.

4. In two months, many student-athletes across all divisions will be a few weeks away from moving on to the next phase of their lives.  Their focus needs to be on setting up what will be next in a very uncertain economic climate, not on hedging their options based on whether/when a tournament may be re-started.

5. I do feel badly for the players, but the cancelled tournaments are approximately #84,329 in the list of what schools' concerns -- and more broadly, our concerns -- should be in the current climate.  Having your college career/season abruptly ended early is raw and emotional at the moment, but is a small speed bump over the arc of a lifetime.

But why not just postpone? If we are two months down the road and we aren't in a better position - cancel. If we are one month from now and this has subdued - Figure something out to play.

I am not convinced you have fully grasped the breadth and depth of exactly what we are dealing with here.

Agreed. I mean, seriously, BigRedScots. Take a look around you and think about it. Is this really something that you want to be pushing right now?

I don't believe that anyone is. Are we over reacting or are we positive in what the future looks like?

China had no idea what was coming and 8 weeks later the China pro basketball league is back up. We knew it was coming. Hopefully we are back up before China.

My point is we just don't know for certainty how bad this will be. Just feel like we rushed for the most drastic measures.

Look, I'm bummed the tournament got cancelled both for selfish reasons (I wanted to announce a Sweet 16 game) and selfless ones (I feel awful for all the seniors, especially the NCC guys who had their run taken out from under them). But if we look back on all of this and say that we overreacted... it means we actually did the right thing here.

That doesn't make sense.

If we over reacted and cancelled seasons when we could have paused them...how is that the right thing?

I agree in over reacting rather than under re-acting. I just think pausing was a more rational answer rather than cancel.

As I have said several times ... I don't have a problem with their decision to close the gym to fans ... I did have a problem of them blaming it on Maryland cases 60 some-odd miles away AND continuing to play other events on their campus. Their concern, understandably with one case known ahead of time and another popping up related to Yeshiva on the day of the game, was Yeshiva and likely their fans especially from New York. You just couldn't tell for sure who had been in contact with whom and such. But they didn't say there was a concern with Yeshiva's connections at the time to the coronavirus. They blamed it on something else in Maryland that NO ONE in Maryland was reacting to - including themselves with other events (despite being an outdoor lacrosse game, people weren't sitting ten feet from one another).

Their actions also only spoke of Yeshiva ... like cleaning/disinfecting the gym between the first and second game, but by all accounts (including myself being one of the last to leave) NOT doing it after the second game that Friday night.

Again ... no problem with the decision to close the gym, but the decision to point the blame elsewhere was problematic.

Missouri hs hoops post-season is still being played.

"Gatherings need to be less that 50."

-play the games with no crowds
-postpone till a time you feel ok with playing with no crowds

Here in Illinois there is a large petition going around to reverse the decision to cancel the IHSA final 4. I talked to one of the coaches and he didn't feel like he was given an adequate answer as to why it was cancelled rather than postponed.

Good for them. Are there a lot of teams getting into airplanes in the Missouri HS tournament?

Pat, if you are saying that air travel isn't safe right now then by closing every college in the country that would be a bad move. Numerous students are hoping on a flight home and thus putting them in harms way. I don't think flying is any more dangerous than going for a walk right now.

Again, I'm not saying there should be games being played right now, but i strongly disagree with everything being cancelled. Maybe there is information out there that we don't know.

There are also reports of other countries sending us fake reports to scare the USA. We live in a weird time - that's for sure.

Not sure how this is related to the Missouri HS state title or your insistence that we could play the NCAA Tournament somehow someday later.
