Georgia is in Europe for FIFA purposes.  Probably fair to call it a transitional nation.

It is true, geographically, there is one Europe and the Caucuses are on the outside looking in but culturally and economically, there are at least two Europes if not three.

Longtime participants here will enjoy this...

Owen Handy texted me this am to let me know that Josh Lawrenz is officially a member of the medical school faculty at Vanderbilt.  Josh's father is the late Dave Lawrenz ("Wheaton C"), who passed away really unexpectedly several years ago.

Josh is still a kid in my mind, so I don't know where all that time went.  Our friend Dave is certainly looking down, proud of Josh.

That's very cool, Bob. Thanks for passing that along.

Q, glad to hear that about Josh.  Super.

On the EC and IWU prospects for next season, seems to me EC would be the favourite.

Sure hope IWU gets all those injured guys back full strength.   And, hope Grant Wolfe can return, but must be dicey given the nature of his injury history.  Yoder and Bair back for sure, right?

Bright future for both programs.

Stay safe, be well, all -- and washy washy on those mitts.   A long long way to go . . .

It seems very close.

If I think back to the neutral court game played in the conference tournament (a game decided in the final minutes), and I subtract Dotlich from Elmhurst, and add Wolfe, Yoder, and Bair to IWU, I'd like IWU's chances as the favorite in that next one.

Even if Wolfe can't go next year, just adding Yoder back in - having a pure PG on the floor - and getting Bair back in (most likely as the 6th man) makes it very close.

Being an Elmhurst fan, I think it would be a tight race between IWU andEU next season. If Grant Wolfe was able to come back and play. I believe the coaches preseason poll would lean to Wesleyan . The fact that they would be at full strength and the loss of Derek Dottlich for Elmhurst would be the deciding factors.

NOT BASKETBALL/D3SPORTS RELATED, BUT RATHER RE COVID-19

Just got a note from a friend on staff at the Cornell University (Weill) Medical School in NY City..
He advised they just received a report from a Vienna (Austria, I assume) medical lab where a group of physicians is studying the records of many of the Italian citizens who have died from COVID-19. The report indicated that the vast majority of the victims had Ibuprofen in their systems. Evidentially they took this medication when they initially began feeling ill. Of those studied who recovered, Ibuprofen was not present. In the United States one of the major brands containing Ibuprofen is ADVIL. The report recommended that people experiencing symptoms like headaches, fever, cough, runny nose, joint pain (who may or may not have Covid-19) take Paracetamol rather than Ibuprofen. In the US, Paracetamol is called Acetaminophen. One of the major US brands of Acetaminophen is TYLENOL.

I was glad to hear this because my go-to med has always been Advil as Tylenol does nothing for me.

In discussing the above with my sister-in-law today, she advised she has a friend whose daughter is a nurse who has been experiencing possible Covid-19 symptoms. When she called her physician this morning, the first thing he told her was to make sure she does NOT take Ibuprofen!
Evidently another study just completed at Vancouver General Hospital found that this medication may actually somehow be "kickstarting" the virus symptoms into pneumonia.

The bottom line here thus seems to be if you experience flu like symptoms, avoid taking Ibuprofen based medications such as Advil, at least for the time being.

** IWU70 ——-> If you read this, the medication sold in Hong Kong that is Acetaminophen based is marketed under the brand name Panadol from GlaxoSmithKline.

I looked this up.  It was a conspiracy theory,  but with some merit,  so scientists have been looking into it.  As yet the WHO hasn't given any specific warning against Advil.

It seems like a "maybe" at this point.  I guess better safe than sorry?

Yea, if I don't see it/read it from the CDC or WHO I pretty much think its highly doubtful.

Thanks, AO.  Luckily, I'm OK so far, still on the CUHK campus, in a quasi-quarantine zone, self-imposed.  I do use Panadol.   We have had in the last 3-4 days a very worrying spike in cases, mostly the imported ones, related to travel, evacuees from Hubei Province, and now a rush of HK students returning from the UK, US and EU locations.  Bound to have more cases, further spikes.  We're at 356 cases, 4 deaths and about 100 recovered, returned home after hospital care.  I expect further spikes in cases in the next few weeks, as more returnees come back to Hong Kong.  We now have stricter bans on all tourists, non-residents, further ban on transit passengers, and also on incomings from Macau and Taiwan too, in addition to all the others.  Basically the entire world now, only HK residents able to return.  I expect closures of bars and restaurants, almost the kind of "shelter-in-place" regulations now in the US, ordered by the HK Gov in the next few days.  We had done so well up until these last 4-5 days, then let our guard down a bit, and you can see what can happen quickly.

Be well, stay healthy all, . . . and wash those hands like Lady MacBeth!

Greek Tragedy

So all this talk about IWU and Elmhurst.  Are NCC and Augie dead in the water? I know NCC loses their top two scorers (and rebounders) and also Chang and Jones while Augie loses their top 4 guys (?). These programs reload, not rebuild. So both won't make runs?

I was merely answering Q,s question on Wesleyan and Elmhurst. However ,Augustana and North Central along with Wesleyan and Wheaton have always done a very good job of recruiting outstanding players. Which always keeps them in contention for conference and ncaa tournament possibilities. Elmhurst is trying to join that group as consistent contenders. North Central and Augustana,s cupboards aren't,t empty for sure. They will be in the hunt for cciw gold.

I might also add Wheaton has good talent returning and I think Carroll could surprise some people.

It was a general question. It wasn't directed at you. Sorry if you felt otherwise. Thanks.

No one said that at all.
