"I have Division I offers, but I might take the Division III route strictly for academics," Scarlata said. "I want to study business or medicine and Augustana has a great medical school. I kind of want to get [the decision] out of the way before playoff time."

Mr. Ypsi

Love the "medical school" memories! ;D

Despite the news lately being Covid-19 24/7, alas there are other tragic ways of dying as well.  Just got word this evening that a girl I coached in youth soccer (now 28 or 29) was killed in a head-on crash by a pickup going the wrong way on a divided highway in Nevada - RIP Elizabeth.  Her older brother was best man at my older son's wedding - he called my son who called me, since I had coached both Josh and Elizabeth. :'(

In brighter news, a 113 year old woman in Spain (believed to be the oldest person in Spain) has fully recovered from Covid! ;D  The article didn't say whether or not she had contracted the "Spanish" flu at 11 or 12.  ("Spanish" flu was always a totally bogus name for the pandemic - soldiers in all WWI armies were dropping like flies before it ever got to Spain, but war-time censorship covered that news up (don't reveal manpower weaknesses to the enemy :o), so Spain (neutral in WWI) revealed the pandemic first.)

NCC RECRUIT

Played in 12 games before being sidelined for the remainder of the season in concussion protocol.
PPG — 15.0

Also, as was widely surmised, and under the heading of No big surprise, I have heard from a trusted source that there will be two Boyds suiting up for NPU next season.

Looks like someone has been asking Todd Raridon about his tracers. ;)

And, of course, Scarlata not only quit the basketball team halfway through his junior season, he graduated from Augustana as a communications major. :D

Big win for North Park over NCC in the battle for the Boyds.

Jalen Boyd could turn out to be a very good player for North Park. Position-wise, he was stuck behind Loras's leading scorer, Ryan DiCanio, and Rowan McGowen as a freshman, and behind the two leading scorers for the Duhawks, J.T. Ford and McGowen, as a sophomore. But people tend to forget that he was a bigger scorer than his brother in high school at St. Joe. Of course, that means nothing now, but it really all comes down to opportunity. Jordan and Jalen are two different sizes and have two different games, which meant that one was always going to get a better opportunity than the other early on at Loras simply due to roster makeup.

NPU has a hole at the 3 spot, and Jalen Boyd could very well step into that hole and do quite nicely for the Vikings.

Per Augustana ... probably doesn't help the "medical school" conversation when there is now a building on campus called "Peter J. Lindberg M.D. Center" LOL

Scarlata wasn't crazy in discussing the medical school; he was just ahead of his time.  :-)

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

With the number of significant retirements on the men's side of Division III basketball, there is plenty to talk about in the month of May. Thus, we needed a "Part 2" this month.

On this "Hoopsville Podcast: May Edition (Part 2)", we talk about what is arguably one of the most significant retirement classes of coaches in the history of Division III - especially on the men's side of things.

Pat Coleman, Ryan Scott, and Bob Quillman join Dave McHugh to chat about those who retired, the number of wins and the high-level of success they had, and even if trying to have a Mt. Rushmore of DIII coaching who might be considered (some coaches you may have forgotten about are mentioned).

Plus - if not for the number of significant retirements, the biggest news in Division III off-season so far would likely be Eric Bridgeland picking up and moving to Southern California. Bridgeland joins Dave to talk about his Whitman program, the success, and the decision to start anew at Redlands and the SCIAC.

Hoopsville broadcasts from the WBCA/NABC Studio. All guests are featured on the BlueFrame Technology Hoopsville Hotline. The offseason plan is to do a podcast each month. The shows will be audio-only leading up to the start of the 2020-21 when we will restart the video shows.

Congrats to North Central's 4th year graduate Matt Cappelletti. Overshadowed at times, "Capp" embodied what it means to be productive STUDENT-athlete.

Career Points -- 1,253 (16th all-time)
47 point game -- 3rd highest single game scoring total.
1st team All-Conference  2X

Academic All-Conference 4X
Magna Cum Laude graduate

"My time at North Central has taught me how to better myself as a person. Using the new skills I've learned, the new relationships I've built and so much more, has helped me be the best version of myself. Some advice for other students would be to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Whether that's making new friends, participating in class or joining a new club, being comfortable with being uncomfortable will
help you find your true self." -Matt Cappelletti, Class of 2020 #NCSeniorStories

That's sound advice coming from a young man. Well said, Matt.

IWU's holiday trip in 2020-21 is to Oregon.  The Titans play at Linfield December 29 - https://golinfieldwildcats.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule/2020-21.

The Titans will also face George Fox on this trip.

The IWU men have never played Linfield or George Fox.  And I'm not sure if the Titans have ever played a game in the state of Oregon.
