Pat and the D3hoops.com crew need our help...

https://www.d3hoops.com/notables/2020/12/d3sports-needs-your-help

I signed up for 1 of the 4 levels today...hope you will consider doing the same.

Thanks!

Sure thing.

I wanted to bring to everyone's attention that the the DIII Championships Committee has decided that basketball has to have 60% participation for the NCAA tournament to move forward. That means if 40% or more call off playing, the tournament will pretty much be done.

Roughly that means we need 250 schools to still be playing - or not lose more than about 170.

Currently we have about 60 or so schools who will not be playing: https://www.d3sports.com/notables/2020/11/winter-is-coming-but-who-will-play

Just for fun . . . in Normal, ISU over D3 Greenville, 177-108.  Apparently Greenville plays a Grinnell style game . . . so the Birds had basically no resistance on lay-ups.  Greenville launched 55 threes.  I think this total score and ISU's 177 won't be matched for some time.

Crazy is what crazy does.

Greenville has now lost four straight to D-1's by a combined 263 points.  That's 65.75 points per game.  Does anyone truly benefit from this?  Frankly, this is an embarrassment to D-3.

"Apparently"? Dude, Greenville has exclusively used the Grinnell system for five full seasons now. (This will be the sixth, if the season ever actually takes place.) It's not as though the Panthers have been keeping it a secret. Nor is this some sort of amazing discovery for fans of other Illinois-based D3 men's basketball programs, as Greenville has played any number of games against CCIW teams during that time ... including your alma mater's.

You really need to get out more, Mark. ;)

As an aside, I think after this semester, it is time to drop Grinnell from the description of the System.  I know they wrote the book, but who reads books anymore?  If anyone gets invited for a podcast to discuss the System, it is going to be Coach Barber.  At least for the foreseeable future.

Illinois State was the first team this season whose announcers appeared to actually be listening to Dr. Barber in the pregame.  They had lots to say about d3, the Greenville program, why they play this style, and how it benefits the students.  I know George was talking to everyone before every game, but I'm glad the ISU guys were listening well enough to use it in the broadcast.

Greenville gets 30+ kids regular minutes between their varsity and JV programs.  It's a bad roster year for this opportunity to happen as Greenville graduated a really stellar class last season.  This is a lot of young guys and guys in new position on the team trying to learn on the fly.  Every team that plays The System adds tweaks and changes to make it unique to them - what Greenville does works much less well when the opponents have several 6'10" guys who aren't easily deterred from the layups the System defense tends to give up.  It's also harder to get good shots off against a D1 team playing five out.

I don't think its overall a bad thing for d3.  People know - and the announcers seem to readily repeat - that Greenville is not a high level d3 squad or from a major conference.  It's not like they're scheduling Duke or anything... although I'm sure Dr. Barber would make the trip if Coach K came calling.

GC v ISU.  GC and ISU made 26% and 57% of treys, respectively.  ISU made 86% of all shots and had 57 rebounds.  GC started five guards.

Greg, I'll leave "getting out more" to you.  Does anyone really care about what Greenville is doing or has done over the past few years?  Or even Grinnell for that matter.

Wishing all here on the Board a happy holiday season, upcoming.  Do take care and stay safe and well.  The virus is raging pretty much everywhere.  So "getting out more," is not exactly a wise course of action just now, especially for someone of my age and girth.

Considering their first season using the "System" they surprised Illinois Wesleyan - leading to one of the more enjoyable conversations with Ron Rose I've had on Hoopsville ... I'm a little surprised those who follow CCIW don't know Greenville plays this way.

Also, the way Greenville played against Augustana in the first round of the NCAA tournament a few years ago.

I completely understand Sager being pretty surprised you weren't that aware.

I'm not so sure that "those who follow CCIW" merits a plural, D-Mac. I won't say anything definitive, because I can't prove it, but I suspect that we're only talking about one specific person who avidly follows a CCIW team and actively peruses this board.

Considering that Greenville has played nine games against seven different CCIW programs over the course of that five-year period -- including the grand unveiling against Illinois Wesleyan in 2015-16 and the narrow loss to ninth-ranked Augustana in the opening round of the 2017-18 D3 tourney that you mentioned -- I just doubt that anybody else who frequents this room was unaware that Greenville uses the Grinnell system.

It might be more fair to call it "the Arseneault System," as I have from time to time on the boards, to give due credit to its now-retired inventor. I wouldn't be surprised if George Barber is currently the System's most high-profile exponent, though -- especially since Scott Van Pelt has been turning Barber's Panthers into a media darling on SportsCenter.

You're probably right, Greg.

Just so you know, Grinnell continues to use the Aseneualt System - Dave Jr, now the coach, has implemented some of the analytics based knowledge he learned coaching in the G-League, which aims to make them more efficient all-around.  It might not always look like Grinnell of old, but they're evolving in the spirit of the original "System" regardless.

Does anyone here have a winning/losing percentage for the teams that use the "system?"   It would be interesting to know if it is, in fact, successful . . . or just a funny experiment, a kind of fanciful and bizarre outlier.

I surely don't ever claim "Hall of Fame" status here, so will leave all the details and knowledge of the "system" and its recent history to all of you.  I only dip in and out of the board randomly and infrequently now.

Happy holidays to all.  Let's hope somehow we have a season starting in January, though it looks extremely unlikely to me.

On D3hoops.com it's very easy to find year-by-year W/L records, and position in conf standings, for Grinnell and Greenville.

Greenville finished 2nd in the SLIAC last year.

Grinnell finished 4th in the MWC.
