Ron Rose and the Titans have landed 6-7 Nick Roper from MICDS HS in STL.

As a SR averaged 12 pts, 8 reb, 4 assists.

Long, athletic, and skilled player.  Chose IWU over D1 and D2 opportunities.

Huge one for the Titans.

One of the 60 Minutes segments yesterday was about Dave Kindred, IWU baseballer in the early '60s, who became an award-winning sportswriter(Wash Post '77-'84, among other papers). he's been writing about a girls hi school basketball team(Morton,IL) since retiring.

It seems IWU is now hoarding 6-7 players. Leave some for the rest of us.

Sad news about a former Carthage basketball player.  Prayers for his family - I can't imagine what they're going through right now:

Sad story. The guy died a hero. My heart goes out to his family.

Not that it's important, but I'm not sure that Pete Rosengren ever played varsity ball for Carthage. He's not listed on the all-time Carthage lettermen page, and former Carthage SID Steve Marovich, who created that page, was as meticulous about recordkeeping as any SID I've ever encountered. I suspect that if Rosengren was actually in the Carthage men's basketball program at all it was in a JV-only capacity. Interestingly, if indeed he was in the program, he likely would've been in Bosko's first-ever freshman class at Carthage.

Again, though, that's just an aside to the background info provided in the Daily Herald article. The focus here is on the man's tragic death.

It's possible he didn't see any playing time, but Carthage's own stories reference him being on the team.

Yeah, I suspect that that's where the Daily Herald writer picked up that tidbit of background info.

I should point out that perhaps the standard for lettering at Carthage was higher than simply appearing in a varsity contest; lettering is not a universally-fixed concept in American high school and college sports in terms of qualifying criteria. But this article, from Rosengren's sophomore year, doesn't list Rosengren on the roster at all.

Ronk, thanks for the alert.  Yes, I saw the 60 Minutes segment on Dave Kindred.  It is a beautiful piece and story about the Hall of Fame writer and Sports reporter.  Very compelling = "Writers Write!"  Very poignant too about his work with the Morton Potters, high school girls team, and about the death of his grandson.  I'm so glad all his papers, notes and photos from his long career, including all the stuff on Ali, are now in the IWU Ames Library Archives.  I was able to attend the ceremony at IWU Homecoming @Ames Library, when all that material was passed over to the IWU Archivists, and got to take a look at some of it.  Great stuff -- lots to sort and preserve -- a true, exhaustive collection of US sports legacies, personalities and history.   The Archivist there, Meg Miner, is doing a terrific job for IWU generally . . . and with these specific, valuable materials from Dave Kindred.  What an amazing career he's had, is still having . . .

Hope everyone sees the 60 Minutes segment . . . I posted it on my FACEBOOK feed.  You can find it easily on the 60 Minutes website or on YouTube, I'm sure.

Happy Spring, all!

Q, thanks for the interviews you are doing.  Good stuff!

Sure looks like Ron and the Titans are having another good recruiting class, incoming.

All best for Spring, for more golf soon in warmer and less windy climes.  I played ISU DA Weibring the other day, with one of the retired IWU professors, and almost got blown away!

I go to 2nd round US Open qualifying in MD each year and remember watching DA Weibring one year(believe he had a hole-in-one or an eagle holeout from the fairway but I don't remember seeing the hole-in-one. At that time, the tour had just played the Kemper Open that weekend in the same area, so all the tour regulars who had to qualify for the open stayed over at this site for the 36 holes. It was the best viewing bargain in sports - free, 36 holes, usually an additional multi-player playoff, and u could walk with the players in the fairway as long as u didn't distract. For example, Nick Faldo was to compete one year but he received a special waiver from the USGA at the last minute. Most of the European golfers didn't usually qualify then for the USGA Open merely on PGA accomplishments.

iwu70

Yes, DA Weibring, an ISU grad, has been very generous in funding key upgrades to the course here -- it's really nice, a true championship level course now for high school and college tournaments all the time, ISU's matches in the MVC . . . I enjoy playing it . . .though not in 35+ mph winds.

Happy Easter to all.

The English Department at IWU talked him into teaching a sports writing class for a semester. He did it, but I don't think he relished it.

Ron seems to have a foothold in the St. Louis area. Hope it continues.
