So, someone affiliated with the Firebirds (or elsewhere with appropriate connections), please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's boo-LAH-tuh-vitch.

So, I am not allowed to weigh in?

Try: boo-lah-to-vitch

NORTH CENTRAL roster is up. Six new varsity players to which there might be a slight degree of future fluidity due to pending injury recovery.

Only took me showing up to harass say hello to Coach Raridon yesterday afternoon to get it out there. :D

Actually, a little birdie told me the other day that NCC SID Clark Teuscher had been bugging Coach R for about a week for an updated roster.   ;)

Can somebody set me straight on which Bulatovic syllable should be emphasized?

Quote from: WUPHF on November 04, 2021, 07:33:32 PM
The Serbian spelling may make the name easier to pronounce: Булатовић.

It is likely that first syllable is emphasized slightly.

Do remember that the ic is pronounced ich.

I'm pretty sure I effed this up his freshman year, because when I prepped for their trip to Naperville last year I remember it showing up differently in the pronunciation guide than how I'd done it the year before.

After consultation with my linguistics expert, my understanding is that the name is pronounced Boo-LAH-toe-veech in the native language, and in English it's Boo-LAH-toe-vich.  8-)

Given his reaction when I asked yesterday if he had a roster handy, I'm inclined to agree. :P He said it was on his to do list, I just think it's funny that I come and ask, and the next day it's ready.

Yes, toe-veech is more like it.

I was asking that to and ich to do too much.

Boo-LAH-toe-vich places too much emphasis on the Lah.

The better way do pronounce would be say Boo Lah Toe Veech as separate words and then begin to eliminate the pauses in between.  But hey, you guys say it however you wish.

Yep. That's exactly how Carthage's sports information department has instructed us (NPU broadcasters and announcers) to pronounce it as well via their pronunciation guide.

Pronunciation guides are becoming more or less an expected thing among CCIW sports information departments. There's no solid evidence that we in CCIW Chat are directly responsible for that development, but I'd like to think that we played our part in it.

Yep, that matches up with what I had last year... which means I effed it up his freshman year.

Still not as haunting as going back to listen to a sound check against the IWU women and realize I said Mia Smith's name wrong for half a decade.

My -a or Me-a? LOL

It's supposed to be pronounced "MY-uh." I'm sure that she's used to having her name mispronounced in most gyms her team visits.

Which is funny, because no one ever called me on it when I spent half a decade messing that up. I only noticed it going back to listen to an IWU radio broadcast of a game at NCC, realized "Oh God, I've been saying her name wrong all this time," and made sure to get it right from that point onward.

And then a couple years after that, when I asked for pronunciation help before a game, Rebekah Ehresman (at that point a GA I think) made sure to point out that it's "My-uh" in addition to going over all the players' names. Appreciated her doing that.

Mr. Ypsi

Blame it on soccer superstar ME-uh Hamm! :o

Even I, of total Green blood, have to double-check every season which pronunciation is correct. :P
