Here is the half court heave buzzer beater by Rhode to beat Wheaton. Gotta tip your cap to the guy for this shot:

I saw Rhode make virtually the same shot at the half-time buzzer during Elmhurst's loss to Calvin last week. Now if he does that a third time this season . . . .

00:00   Elmhurst RHODE,JAKE made 3-pt. jump shot   34 - 51

Dude's been doing this for years. He hit a half court shot at the halftime buzzer in a game at the hangar like 3 years ago. The only logical explanation is that Jake Rhode is a vampire.

I could only catch the second half on the computer, but Id love to know what the confrontation between Baines and Schauer was all about. It occurred after an unremarkable loose ball foul on Wesley Hooker. Schauer is seen vociferously pointing Baines' direction and when the camera pans over, Baines is all the way over on the Wheaton side of the scorers table, giving it back at the Wheaton head coach. Not dissimilar from Baines' confrontation with Bosko a few years back.

There's definitely a battle royale going on right now for the title of "most colorful CCIW coach" in the wake of the retirements of Bosko Djurickovic and Grey Giovanine, and John and Mike are right in the thick of it. Some people are likely willing to plunk down their hard-earned cash on Todd Raridon, and Paul Combs makes for an interesting dark horse, but for my money it's the two guys who are separated by four stops on the Union Pacific West Metra line.

They're clearly going to have to up their games, because Bosko and Grey were absolute legends in the color department. Sparring with each other at the scorer's table is a nice start.

Baines is sort of like the classic car, in that while he might spend long stretches in third gear, he is certainly capable of shifting into top gear and blowing past everyone on a moment's notice. From what I've seen in games vs Elmhurst, Schauer seems more like an automatic transmission city car, highly dependable in handling the stop and go demands of rush hour traffic. I mean this as flattery to both!

Elmhurst was outstanding on both ends in the middle part of the second half and built up an 11 point lead, before Wheaton fought back. The way Alioth was hitting 3's, I was certain he was going to bag the winner on one from downtown. Incredible end to a great game.

I believe the dustup was not necessarily between Schauer and Baines.  It had to do with some sort of comment that Hooker made to Schauer after the foul was called.  You can see glimpses of Schauer speaking back at Hooker (rarely advisable I would imagine) and Hooker exhibiting some glee in the successful provocation of the Thunder coach.  I'm guessing the animated speaking to Baines had to do with complaining about the Elmhurst coach's own player, but that's just a guess.  Baines' "What do you want me to do about it?" look seems to point that way.

In any case, a tough way to lose for Wheaton but an unbelievable shot by Rhode who made several key baskets and plays down the stretch.  Wheaton had their chance to better secure the victory.  But missed FTs by Adom and Anthony made the difference.  The play of Alioth vs Lavon Thomas was worth the price of admission by itself.  It seems Wheaton brings out the best game for LT every season.

You're right. I forgot Schauer and Hooker had words before the two coaches squared off.

Reminds of me my closest friends group - who in 20 years or so will probably celebrate a bachelor party, a retirement party, and a child's graduation party all in the same weekend.

Wheaton cruised to a W at Carroll 81-57.

Nyameye Adom led the Thunder with 20 pts in 28 mins of play.  Tyson Cruickshank and Cade Alioth both had 15 pts with Alioth one short of a nation leading 8th double-double with 9 boards.  Wheaton shot 53% from the field.

The Pios were led by Ryan Mendoza with 15 pts, 7 rebs.

The Thunder got this one out of the way for the big home date on Saturday with the #3 team in the country.

Greg,

I was at the game and can comment.   First off, the free throw shooting I've seen this year from multiple teams has really been poor.  Both teams tonight shot 47% with that barely being better than what NP shot overall from the field and just less than Carthage shot from the field (50%).

Bulatovic is a really good player, but his FT shooting tonight (3-9) really hurt (missed two down the stretch to tie it up).  He is shooting around 45% for the year.  When you can get past your man as easily as he typically can and draws plenty of fouls, he needs to make them.

Slyder drew up a great play at the end of the game with NP up by two.  Osborne had hit a driving two in the lane before that to get them up by two and then Bulatovic missed his two FT's on the other end.   North Park got a timeout after a missed shot and Osborne, who was on the wing, along the baseline, cut around some screens and was wide open under the basket for layup and a foul.   It happened so fast I didn't see the whole play, but it worked to perfection.

Carthage got out rebounded 37 to 28.  Without Bernero, they are hurting underneath to keep teams off the boards.  Bernero was on the bench tonight, but was moving around on a scooter as his ankle was wrapped up.  It was noted in the paper today that he will be evaluated in a few weeks, so maybe he can make it back before end of year.

Colton Sigel has some range and really can be a weapon from deep.  All his eight shots were from three point range.  He nailed a few tonight that I thought NP did a poor job switching off screens and let him get a wide open look.  He shoots from NBA range so you have to be on him all of the time.

NP had some moments when they try to much one on one, but they also had some nice runs too when they were getting move around to the open man.  Johnson had a nice game and they did have 4 guys in double figures with Sanders just one point shy of making it five.

Yes, NPU's free-throw shooting has been atrocious this season. The Vikings are now 70-188 (.593), and, considering that close games are kinda their thing, it's a more serious problem than it is for most teams.

FTs are important. NWU almost came back from 9 down with under 30 seconds to go last night, because BVU missed the front end of the 1 and 1 repeatedly.  Teams are definitely going to make you pay for that.
