Thanks, Q, for posting the King speech.  I remember it vividly.  I was there, visiting IWU as a high school senior at Monticello High School, invited up as part of the admissions process by David Hughes, then an Admissions Office Counselor.  At the time, I was Central Illinois Conference President of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.  I had a part time job processing milk in the Country Charm Dairy in Monticello and the guys there gave me a hard time for going . . .  saying, "why would you want to go hear that N ....  . " Yes, it was a rude awakening to the attitudes of my co-workers at the time.  The speech was very inspiring, and I got to meet King, thanks to our family's ties to then IWU President Lloyd Bertholf, who was instrumental in inviting King to campus.  I got to work with King later in Washington, D.C. during the Poor Peoples' Campaign on the National Mall, during the summer of 1967.  His approach to racial justice, voting rights and non-violent civil disobedience has always been a great inspiration to me . . .  and to many others in the Class of '70.

Heading for The Shirk soon . . . should be one of the best games of the year -- IWU hosting Elmhurst.  Coach Rose and almost everyone back . . . save perhaps for Cory Noe.  We'll see.

May Dr. King's legacy endure . . .

I think today is IWU's last game w/out starting SG Cory Noe.

Cory (14.4 ppg, .509 FG) is key to everything the Titans do.  He's a terrific shooter who keeps defenses honest in how they guard IWU in the post. Big moment shot maker and FT shooter.

Gotta grind one more out w/out him.

Suddenly we are midway through January and in just six weeks the conversation will be about who is in or out of the NCAA Tournaments. Conference schedules intensify as teams try and position themselves for conference tournaments.

All this while COVID still impacts games and changes conference rules or allowances for postseason tournaments.

On Monday's edition of Hoopsville, we talk to a few more teams still flying a bit under the radar along with one who is just hoping to survive the conference schedule in the best shape as possible.
Plus, we react to the latest Top 25 men's poll in the Double-Take with Ryan Scott,D3hoops.com, and Bob Quillman, IWUHoops.com. And we preview not only the upcoming NCAA Convention but our special on the topic.

Agreed.  Some great playing but all the missed free throws were perplexing.

The last EC play, down by 2, was a head scratcher to me.  I thought they might try to run Hooker off the ball if Rhode couldn't get anything.  But Militello? Really?

They are going to think about that play all the way back to the Western suburbs.

That was one heck of a game.

I am sure I am not the only one who wanted to see OT.

Yes, especially considering who was missing them. Dominic Genco, an .879 free-throw shooter, missed one at 6:27 with Elmhurst up by three. Fifteen seconds later, with the 'jays now up by one, Jake Rhode, a .909 free-throw shooter, missed two of them.

Both teams were clanking foul shots right and left all day, but it's misses like those that really stand out. Plenty of other weird things, too -- like Illinois Wesleyan coughing up the ball 23 times but still winning, Elmhurst outdoing IWU on the offensive glass by a huge 14-6 margin but still losing, and Wesley Hooker, who was shooting all of .235 from downtown coming into the game, going 4-6 from range.

It was actually Bryce Drews that threw up that 25-foot airball. He just panicked. He had nobody directly in front of him, IIRC, or at least nobody to his right, because the Titans had slid to his left to get the ball out of Rhode's hands. Drews had the time and the open lane to either penetrate or draw in closer and attempt the shot from a more reasonable distance, but his nerves got the better of him.

As long as it did not go more than 3 OT's, I wouldn't mind if the game had to go to OT to settle it.  Just the same, IWU shot 64.4% (29 of 45 from the field) for the game, but committed 23 turnovers and still won by 4 points.  That takes some grit.  (Of course, Elmhurst turned the ball over 14 times in their own right, but thanks to a 16-2 edge in points off turnovers in the first half, the Blue Jays won the points off turnovers category for the game, 27-12).

Please ask Ron Rose the field for next seasons Jack Sikma Invitational on Hoopsville. This season was so good, I'm already looking forward to next season.  He might not answer, but it's always a free question right  ;)

I think we know YU is coming? The other two though?

Yes, a great game at The Shirk, ragged at times, some weird officiating too (going both ways), yet, a game worthy of Elite 8 or Final Four level of intensity.

Rhode is just so tough to guard, making 8 treys, scoring 30.  But, Lambesis had the final say on the steal and the clear path foul by Rhode late in the game, though IWU didn't really capitalize on that play, Yoder missing two tech free throws.  The key FTs came later from Cody Mitchell.  Really two heavy-weight teams landing blow after blow . . .

Yes, a concern of IWU with 23 TOs -- either good defense surely, or some unforced errors too, perhaps due to the intensity of the game.

For EU:

Rhode 30, 8-14 from three
Hooker 20

For IWU:

Leritz 27 and 10, playing carefully after four fours with six minutes to go.
Yoder 27
Sroka 16

As mentioned, Titans shooting 64% from the field, 43% from threeball-land.  Winning the rebounding line, 35-30.  I'm sure the re-match up at Elmhurst will be just as intense.

A nice crowed of very rambunctious students . . .and the minimal Titan Band doing their thing, helpful out with the atmosphere of an otherwise rather limited crowd, with covid regs/protocols still in place, and a Monday afternoon game.

Really proud of the Titans for being so gritty, coming back from 10 down, grinding it out 'til the end.  Luke Yoder always amazes me when he seems to sense that he must score more . . . as he did today, taking threes, driving hard to the hoop, in ways that he normally doesn't always do.  A great performance . . .

Now 12-2 -- up to NPU on Wednesday.  Perhaps Cory Noe will be back.

-Matt Leritz: 27 pts, 10 reb, 3 assists
-Luke Yoder: 27 pts, 6 reb, 5 assists
-Ryan Sroka: 16 pts, 5 reb, 2 assists

-Jake Rhode: 30 pts, 7 reb, 5 assists
-Wes Hooker: 20 pts, 3 reb

FG:
-Elmhurst: 26-64 (.406)
-IWU: 29-45 (.644)

IWU was kind of out of sorts most of the game - 23 turnovers, which is just crazy for this team.  But boy did the Titans find a way.  IWU has some talented, tough, competitive guys and they made big play after big play first just to stay in it, and then to take the lead.

Matt Leritz hit 3 tough FGs just to keep the Titans in it down the stretch.  Cody Mitchell hit a big jumpshot and 2 huge FTs.  Ryan Sroka was great as well.

I thought IWU PG Luke Yoder was just tremendous.  He is a great player.

Big win for the Titans.  In every championship run there are a few games like this where you just have to find a way...and IWU did today.

Thank you TitanQ. Another good field. I apologize if I missed this somewhere a while back.
