With a perfect 4 of 4 from the line Wed night against Carroll, North Central's Matt Helwig has now hit his last 60 consecutive free throws. So far this season, Matt has made 96 of 101 attempts, or 95.05%.
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

That is extremely impressive.  That % would place him top 10 all-time for qualified shooters in Division One!

Bulatovic in street clothes sitting on the bench as Carthage warms up.

He sustained a concussion in practice a couple days ago, and is in the associated protocol at this time.

The Titans turning up the pressure, running away with it in the second half.  No answer for Leritz.  Titans shooting 52% from the field, keeping it rolling on the road.  Any road win in the CCIW is a good win . . .  two more road games to go this week, @Carthage, then the big one @EU.  Many miles to go . . .

For CU:
Mendoza 18
Sturgeon 9

For IWU:
Leritz 19 and 7
Heflen 11

The Vikings almost coughed up an 18-point second half lead, as a furious Bennies run over the final ten minutes put the visitors in position to tie or win with the last possession. But the Vikings defended well, knocking the ball out of bounds at the scorer's table with under four seconds left, and the distance coupled with the lack of time caused the shot that BU took from downtown to be a rushed, not-squared-up clank.

The Vikings were pretty spotty today -- stretches of great effort and execution at both ends of the floor coupled with stretches of absolute cringe basketball -- but they'll take the W. Frankly, it's just good to have the starting five back on the floor for the first time in five weeks.

North Park wins a roller coaster contest, 68-66, over Benedictine.  BU jumped out to a 22-10 lead at the 12:25 mark of the first half, but the Vikings clawed their way back to a 39-all tie at the break.  The Vikings opened the second half with a 21-3 run, only to see the lead dwindle to two points with five seconds to go.  BU was in good position for a game-winning three-pointer, but the ball rimmed out and the Vikings came away with the two-point victory.

North Central 90
Carthage       79

NCC led the entire game. Matt Helwig topped the Cardinals scoring with 28. He was closely followed by his brother Ethan with 27, and Blaise Meredith added 20.

The visitors shot 55.4% overall, including 46.2% from three compared to 50.9% and 36.7% respectively for the home team. They also held a 36-24 advantage on the boards.

As indicated, Carthage was without the services of Fillip Bulatovic this afternoon. A definite disadvantage.
Matt Helwig's consecutive string of free throws unfortunately ended at 61.

The Helwig brothers are a load, especially for a young team like Carthage.   Meredith was very efficient too with 20 points, 8 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Carthage rotation today of 10 players included 4 freshmen and 3 sophomores.   They are having a tough year, but I like how hard they play.   They have some nice pieces to build on and with some of the talent graduating around the league, they could make a nice jump next year, led by Bulatovic.   The addition of the transfer, Nesbitt, will add to that jump.   He started today and had a nice line over 22 minutes with 11 points.   He is different than the rest of the young guys as he can take defenders off the dribble so as he gets more time and becomes more comfortable, I think he will have some big games before the year is over.

Bernero is getting limited minutes as he rounds back into the rotation, but he is another player who has a bright future.

Wheaton fans were complaining about Carthage broadcaster John Weiser mispronouncing Nyameye Adom's last name. Well, in the interest of fair play, it needs to be pointed out that Wheaton broadcaster Don Crowder is mispronouncing Dominic Genco's last name -- and "the Consigliere", like Adom, is a senior who has started multiple years for his program.

What are the broadcasters going to ask Coach Schauer if Wheaton loses this one?

WUPHF

That was an awesome game, book-ended by some sloppy play, but still awesome...

These two teams have played two of the best games I've seen all season -- both one-point decisions that went down to the final buzzer.
