They're definitely still usable -- just not in that space. They've been way too small for the Shirk since jump.

Regardless of their age, they are most certainly NOT the same scoreboards as the one in this photo:

My "Spider-Man sense" tells me that the scoreboard in the picture displays the visiting roster of the NPC Vikings... any old timers concur? Most likely from the Wed. night game the night before.

Correct. Bernie Greene, Dale Peterson, Dave Franzen, Paul Rockwell, Jon Ecker, Paul Armitage, and Bruce Swanson formed the NPC rotation in 1965-66.

Great historical work, guys.

Yes, Pat, the new ones are somewhat larger . . . and surely much brighter with better illumination, good for old geezer alum eyes like mine.  The new ones are now next to an equal-sized video screen, a kind of jumbotron. . .  so they had to re-arrange all the banners to make room for these two newer and bigger boards.   Now six banners on one end, and the two national championship banners -- men in 1997 and women in 2012, -- at the other end.  It looks real nice . . .  and the floor has been completely sanded and repainted, so the Shirk Arena looks very bright and good right now, ready for the new season.   You'all come . . .  !  :)  A great place for D3 hoops . . .

Could it be that the bleachers at Wrigley Field have heretofore held the ever sought after "Fountain of Youth" (a protocol consisting of warm beer; meat-substitute hot dogs; hard-as-a-rock large pretzels; and 2nd-degree sunburns) that allows a bi-centenarian such as Sager to easily quote the rotational players from the NPC roster of a team SIXTY. YEARS. AGO.

Good God, Man. How olde are you?!?!?! (I'm assuming old enough that it requires me to spell "old" with an "e"!)

I am also assuming that the Alfred Nobel Prize Committee should be investigated for incompetence in not already awarding the Nobel Prize in Medicine for Sagers "Fountain of Youth" discovery!!!

There's always the off-chance that a frequent poster is also a very serious student of history, particularly vis-a-vis an institution and its athletic programs.

Thanks, Mr_b, yes, some of us do have great joy in the history and traditions of our school's athletic programs.  Mine goes back to pre-Sikma days at IWU in the late 60s, when we still played ISU in basketball.  That was the Tommy Gramkow, Fred Evans and Sheldon Thompson team days.   Long trips to Kansas City instead of trips to Salem.  I believe I'm even a few years older that Mssr. Sager, the man of multiple eye rolls.  But, he is very olde.  As I'm "iwu 70" you can easily calculate my age . . .

I did hear a WGLT report recently on the renovations now going on at the old ISU Horton Fieldhouse, so that high school basketball tournaments and games could be hosted there.  The ISU Athletic Department official describing the renovations even said that ISU was planning on approaching IWU again to see if a cross-town basketball renewal might be possible . . .  we do now play ISU in baseball, but not in basketball since 1969 or so, when IWU beat ISU in that last game . . . with Tommy Gramkow hitting the winning jumper from the free-throw line, as time expired.  One of the best days in IWU basketball history . . .

Some students, I won't say who, were able to sneak a white chicken into the game under the cheerleaders' pompoms, and said chicken was tossed out on the playing surface just before tip - off.  Said students had a big banner that was paraded around Horton with the words, "The Real Redbird."   The series was being cancelled by ISU.  We had some fun in those days . . .

It doesn't bother me, all in good fun, but it is pretty funny how many times this story gets brought up on these boards.  Perhaps we can change the stats under our posting names on the left side to reflect this:

pgkevin, I like your idea . . .  I think you had to be there.  :)

Looking forward to the new season . . . creating new memories.

... and that a relatively new poster knows a lot less than he prefers to let on. ;)

And there it is, folks: the 3,754th retelling of the 1970 ISU/IWU chicken story on CCIW Chat.

Shall we start a pool on when either Chuck or Mark regales us with retelling #3,755?

You should - although I doubt you could get the pool created and have time for even the most enthusiastic of us to enter said pool before they told it again...

Next Man Up

NCC/Lake Forest scrimmage on 11/2. I believe it was originally scheduled for The Hangar, but I'm hearing there might be a need to switch to LF.
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

Mr. Ypsi

Don't know if this will constitute a conclusion to the not-yet-posted poll, but for the record I have probably referred to/recounted the last ISU/IWU game no more than a dozen times (it WAS a helluva game, with a buzzer-beating shot by Tommy Gramkow), but, not having been a participant in the chicken prank (unlike my classmate and fellow poster ;)), I've recounted the chicken story AT MOST twice.

For the sake of current residents of BloNo, I hope the rivalry will resume.  I can understand why it ended at that time - ISU certainly had nothing to gain and much to lose as a newbie to D1 by playing a strong D3 team - AND the students DID sometimes get a bit out of hand (NOT a reference to the chicken prank - that was responded to in kind as a harmless, funny prank).

While I've referred to the final ISU-IWU game several times, I have probably referred to the IWU-Kentucky State game (NAIA tourney where we gave the eventual national champion, with TWO future NBA players. a closer game than anyone else did) and the IWU-Hope game (Hope being ranked #1 in the d3hoops.com poll) in round one of the national tourney AT the DeVos in double OT (probably the most exciting game I have ever seen in person).  So I've probably offended non-Titans more with those than with ISU-IWU! :o ;D

The latter story at least bears the virtue of being relevant to D3, as well as being directly of interest to d3boards.com's large Hope basketball contingent.

The other stories fall under the benign stereotype of forgetful elderly gentlemen telling the same ancient tales of their youth over and over again to a captive audience. If this board was a live medium, we'd cut you off with shouts of, "Not that one again!" or "We've heard that story a million times already!" barely after you got started. As pgkevin said, it's all in good fun.

I will say this: over the years, you and your classmate have done me a favor by being a great object lesson as to why I shouldn't delve into telling too many NPC national championship stories on CCIW Chat. ;)
