WOW! Lose the first two games of the season and it's a very quick out the door. Honestly, I was a little surprised he lasted as long as he did. Since joining the CCIW, he was 21 games under .500 overall, and 20 under in the CCIW. Additionally, he seemed to have a little bit of a goofy reputation around the conference as evidenced by his behavior in the Towelgate incident, referred to in the post above.
I sense we will see him as an assistant someplace else fairly soon.
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

Don't surround yourself with yourself. 🧍🏼‍♂️(Yes)

I wish I knew. Very new to the program and unfortunately little to no insight. I watched them in a Whitewater scrimmage a few weeks ago and they were very competitive against a good team.

Not the case this past weekend. And I know they struggled last year.

I'll try to get a better understanding in the next few days and update if I do.

A "goofy reputation" is hardly a disqualifier as far as being a successful college men's basketball head coach is concerned -- and that includes the CCIW.

Heck, I look at Grey Giovanine, and I sometimes think that the problem with unsuccessful CCIW head coaches is that they might not be goofy enough. Mike Schauer? No man in this league that I respect more, but if the word we used to describe Mike's in-game demeanor was also the name of one of the Disney dog characters, it wouldn't be Pluto. ;)

And if a turbulent (or at least truculent) personality during the forty minutes when the game is being played, like Combs has, is a no-go, then how does one explain the success of John Baines (most mild-mannered guy in the league unless his team's playing a game, when he transforms into the most technical-prone coach in the CCIW) or Todd Raridon (whose endless whining made him the bane of officials in every gym in the league)?

Being a college men's basketball head coach means embracing a very weird profession. It's got a strong appeal for control freaks, it's heavily steeped in traditional machismo, and yet it has a strong element of exhibitionism and encourages an attitude of victimhood and melodrama. More often than not I look at a college men's basketball head coach and I think to myself, "Yeah, there's a guy who definitely does not belong in an office cubicle or a boardroom."

We'll... there are now TWO D3 openings in the Milwaukee-area as Brian Millet is stepping down at MSOE.  This one we know is a resignation/retirement.  Combs... not so much.

It's a very odd move. I have to think there is more to it but I rather let it play out instead of speculate. I would think he would've been given a bit more slack coming off of a down year last season.

Just an FYI, I got confirmation that the NCC game at Whitewater this weekend is at 5 pm, not 7. Whitewater's website has 5 pm while this site and NCC's site has 7. Should be a great game of Helwig U vs Barnstable U.

Since I was scorned for criticizing ArmyWife's self-congratulatory flag waving, there is zero reason to cite Israel's "Right to Return" policy in this basketball forum.

Not sure what you're on about, Mark. I expressed neither approval nor disapproval of Israeli citizenship policy. I simply mentioned it in light of IWU70's speculation that Zevi Samet might've played for one of Israel's national youth teams despite the fact that Samet lists Monsey, NY as his hometown on the Yeshiva roster.

If anyone is interested in following my adventures in the Wisconsin D3 Basketball Challenge, I moved the thread to the multi regional section since it is multi regional after all. It mostly involves teams from the WIAC, MWC, NACC and the two Wisconsin based CCIW teams.

As expressed by others in this forum and to me by the private msg feature, you have a repeated tendency to obfuscate/ignore/dismiss/fail to understand the position others have.  The Right to Return policy is highly sensitive and inflammatory, not to you (of course), but to others like me, and has absolutely no business being mentioned here.

It's just a fact that he could potentially play for Israel - commenting on whether that's good or not would be inappropriate, but mentioning right of return in the course of stating a fact, not problematic.

Sort of like saying, "Donald Trump owns a golf course," is not inherently controversial.

I fully understand that Israeli citizenship policy is controversial. And I took no position, pro or con, on it whatsoever. Had someone responded to my post with an opinion about that policy, I would've been the first to suggest that we move the conversation elsewhere, because, as you said, some people consider it to be highly sensitive and inflammatory. Starting an argument over matters for which people hold passionate beliefs, but which have nothing to do with D3 men's basketball, is a path down the wrong road -- that's been our general consensus here since the very beginning, which is why we try to dissuade people from making political comments.

Nevertheless, I must say again that Israeli citizenship policy was completely relevant to the subject at hand, which was the other Mark's speculation about an American D3 basketball player possibly competing for Israel. And that is the only reason why I mentioned it. I'm not dismissing your concern at all. I'm simply saying that I mentioned that policy for informational purposes only, with no intention of it becoming a topic in and of itself in this forum.

Last night the CCIW dispatched another System team, as Millikin took down Greenville, 120-85, in Greenville. Drake Stevenson nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 25 and 10 with a nice 8:4 ratio, plus four steals to boot, and he was joined in double figures by Frazier Ott with 23, Laurence Cole with 22 and 9, and Landon Hullinger with 15. J.T. Welch dished out nine dimes to only three turnovers, and Nate Straughter nabbed four steals for the Big Blue.

I typically defer to the NCC guys when it comes to posting a Cardinals score, but, since none of them have mentioned the game yet, last night the Cards were upset by Aurora in overtime, 81-79, at Thornton Gym. AU's Julian Gatewood hit a jumper in the lane with three seconds left in the extra session to procure the victory for the Spartans; Ethan Helwig missed a trey at the buzzer that would've pulled the game back for North Central. Matt Helwig led the way for the Cards with 31 and 8, with Ethan Helwig contributing 20 points to the cause and Shea Cupples adding 10, while Brian Johnson led NCC on the boards with a dozen rebounds. Among the four Spartans who scored in double figures was former North Park PG Michael Osborne, who had a 12 and 7 night with a 4:1 ratio.

Elmhurst plays at Marian in tonight's only contest.

If all goes right, I'll be heading over to Fond du Lac for the game. It should be a big deal because playing in the NACC, I'm sure they don't get very many ranked teams to visit. Concordia WI and Ripon both had good crowds, hoping Marian does as well.
