As to the University/College nomenclature discussion, for what it's worth, I was always led to believe IWU's use of University stemmed from having multiple Schools of study e.g. School of Liberal Arts, School of Fine Arts, School of Nursing, etc. rather than any reference to graduate level programs.  I don't have any strong feelings one way or another as to which is the proper distinction, just offering some perspective.

Plenty of colleges call their academic subdivisions "schools", though. It's hardly a university distinctive. Traditionally, a school with subdivisions is considered a university if it's designed on the Oxbridge model -- semi-autonomous residential colleges with their own administrations as well as faculties.

Roper landed awkwardly on his ankle. BobQ believes it is a severe ankle sprain, which obviously could mean he misses multiple months. Hopefully it is not so severe.

If it's a sprain which ultimately keeps him out for that long, it's undoubtedly a high ankle sprain wherein an external rotation injury tears the syndesmosis ligament between the fibula and tibia. Hopefully that's not what occurred as it could cost most of the season, so good luck to Mr. Roper.

BobQ ???.  Is that the IWU head trainer?
So young hero, ask yourself............................Do you want to go to college, get a good education, and play (basketball)(football), or do you want to go to college, get a good education, and watch (basketball)(football)? 🤔 😏

BTW Gregory, freshman Jacob Nabor saw extended action for the Pios tonight.  There's an entire subgenre of sly asides sitting on the tee for you when Paradisio Dante and Nabor are standing side by side on the floor.

I don't think I'll be able to top the flash of insight I had earlier this month during a North Park women's basketball game. NPU's opponent, Dominican, has a guard named Heaven Knox. I called her name on a play, then stopped and a moment later said, "Heaven Knox ... that sounds like a hymn, not a basketball player."

Quote from: kiko on November 30, 2022, 11:21:19 PMAlso, how is it possible that Paradisio Dante hails from a town that sits 6,224 feet above sea level?

... unless it's a high ankle sprain in which he damaged his Kent Raymond tendon, in which case he'll miss three games. ;)

As far as I can tell, Illinois Wesleyan has always been known as a University.  Only later did they organize schools.  I have to think it was more aspirational by the founders rather than anything else.

This aspirational aspect seems a reasonable likelihood as the Law School and College of Music were established within a reasonably short time (if you consider 20ish years a reasonably short time) after the Univerity's founding.  I'm sure there's individuals much further steeped in the history of the institution than I am who can offer a more accurate summation.  But that's enough non-basketball conversation about my beloved alma mater for this board.

Apologies I believe I misspoke when I said school, as the correct terminology should be College of Liberal Arts, Fine Arts, Nursing, etc. which do operate quasi-independently under the University umbrella rather than "School of...."  Again, it's no hill I'm at all interested in dying on and for real for real this time is my last comment on the matter.

Aspirational. Yes, that's a good description.  ::)
I remember a few years ago when you would look at an Illinois Western roster. Nobody could major only in things like Political Science, Biology, or Biochemistry. A kid would be listed as a Poly Sci major, but then in parentheses it would say (Pre-Law). After a kid listed as a Biology major it would show (Pre-Med), and after a Biochemistry major it would have to say something like (Pre-Pharmacology). Couldn't have just a plain old Poly Sci, Biology, or Biochem major!

Is it really so pretentious to think the school does indeed offer different concentrations and course tracks within a major where yes, there are different Biology concentrations for students pursuing teaching careers vs medical careers for example?  I know it's become chic to bag on the school and those who support it lately, but the pettiness is just silly at this point.

Agreed. I suggest we move on. We have plenty of basketball material to talk about now.

This Saturday:
   4 pm starts
Carthage @ Elmhurst
Illinois Wesleyan @ Carroll
   7 pm starts
Millikin @ Augustana
North Park @ North Central
Calvin @ Wheaton

This is a perfect opportunity for Pete McBride to have a throwback Saturday in which he attends two CCIW games in one day. (I'd join him, but I have a full day ahead of me on Saturday, and I'll be lucky if I can make time to see the NPU @ NCC game on my computer.)

Gregory,
Due to the recent CCIW decree,  are not the traditional CCIW 4:00 starts now scheduled for 4:15, and the old CCIW 7:00 tip-offs now set for 7:15?

Also, does attending a playoff football game and a basketball game that same day count?  :D

Good point ... except that the CCIW website is only showing MU @ AC as a 7:15 pm game (and that just changed a little while ago). Fortunately, both NPU and NCC show a 7:15 tipoff.

As for the women, all of the late games are scheduled for 5 pm (not 4 pm). At least the CCIW website and the individual schools are in agreement on that.

I think all the schools individual websites show either 4:15 or 7:15, whichever is applicable.
As Wheaton is playing a non conference foe, they should still be OK to go at 7:00.

Aspirational describes basically every college or university at its founding.  That is why so many 19th and early 20th century buildings are modeled after European university buildings.

I would defend the use of pre-med and pre-law as more than a marketing ploy.  A Biology degree alone will no longer qualify you for one of the AAMSE medical schools unless you take a psychology class for example.  And every law school-bound senior should have an advanced writing course and so on.

OK, on to basketball...

No, they don't. The Augustana, Millikin, North Central, and North Park websites all show their respective women's teams as playing at 5 pm, just as does the CCIW website.

Well, surprise, surprise. Given that this is the MEN'S basketball board, the various MEN'S schedules were logically what my post was referring to. Why would I reference schedules pertaining to women's teams in the MEN'S room? If I had wanted and/or intended to dissect the various women's schedules, I would have properly done so in the women's room. Additionally, you, yourself have always been a proponent of doing proper research before posting which I did by checking each of the MEN'S basketball websites before making my post. Lastly, although you might not remember doing so, I think you've chided people in the past when they've discussed women's issues in the men's room, and vice versa.
