In real time, I thought it was a blocking foul and not a flop.  There was contact, and from my POV, odds are not good that the defender is going to get a charging call at that point on the court as the offensive player wasn't really driving to the basket.

And calling that while swallowing the whistle (to the Cardinals' benefit) on the final shot seems... inconsistent.  But no complaints here.

Well, one complaint.  This should not have been a one possession game at the end.

Perhaps the next benefactor that pulls up in front of Old Main with a semi truck full of dinero will desire and designate that it be used for a new Fieldhouse. The last five loads of cash gifted to North Central were earmarked for the new Health Science & Engineering Building, new Science Center, New Hall dorm, the Residential-Recreation (Res-Rec) Center, and the Fine Arts Center.

I am familiar with the recent additions and am glad to see the science center and fine arts center in particular replacing badly outdated facilities.  They were 100% the right priorities.  And I'm not expecting groundbreaking anytime soon.

My broader point, though, is simply that DeVos is a beautiful facility, especially when compared to the others I see on my screen whilst muttering at the single camera operator to keep up with the action. :)  It was akin to Hertz giving me a Jaguar for my rental vehicle, and then I turn in the keys and return home to a big ol' nine passenger station wagon with wood paneling and 220,000 miles on it.  It's functional and familiar and still runs fine and probably has a lot of great memories.  But it is a very different driving experience.

Wheaton definitely deserves their ranking . . . playing really good defense and just a very crisp offense, everyone knowing exactly where to be when. . .  I was impressed.  Their offensive sets remind me of Wash U in their heyday.   Perhaps Wheaton is even a top ten team.

IWU just doesn't have a clear leader, a clear identity just now, after their first 10 games.  Very poor perimeter defense.  If this is how it plays out and remains, I don't think there's much chance the Titans will win the CCIW.   Neither U of Chicago or IWU played very well the other night . . .  IWU lucky to get the win in OT.

Congrats to Ron Rose on his 300th win as IWU's coach, however ugly or ragged it was, a win is a win.   He's almost half way to the IWU record of 636 wins or whatever it is by Dennie Bridges over 36 years of coaching at IWU.  Rose in his 17th year now.

Greg, NPU has a great record so far . . . now comes the bigger tests, esp. the January 4th game with Wheaton.   It will be interesting.

The Titans have two games at the end of the year out in the Pacific Northwest.   Let's hope for two Ws and some real improvement in IWU's play out West.   I think it's Linfield and George Fox . . .

I've been in DeVos Fieldhouse and it is indeed a superlative facility.

Some years ago, 2010 I believe, I was one of few to be privy to being shown renovation blueprint plans for NCC's Merner Fieldhouse, AKA The Hangar. Besides seating, a major part of the overall plan was to level the balcony, and convert it to coaches' offices with picture windows overlooking the basketball court. While a new Fieldhouse facility would have been, and still would be, a welcome addition to campus, three conditions arose which have kept (complete) Merner renovations from becoming a reality.

1. Initial cost. Merner was built in 1931. If memory serves me correctly, the portion of the engineering study done on the building that dealt with the balcony conversion to coaches' offices found that the floor supporting the balcony consists of about a foot of solid concrete. Evidently, concrete thickness was a common construction method at the time. Problem #1 centered on the fact that the man hours needed to chip away at that mass of concrete would have eaten a major percentage of the total cost of the project.

2. Just after the plan was originated, and blueprints were drawn, the powers that be determined a new Res-Rec Center was a more pressing need for the College than a renovated Fieldhouse/Gymnasium. Hence the money on hand at the time was designated to go toward the construction of the Res-Rec Center.

3. Each subsequent Brinks delivery since that plan has been earmarked by its benefactor and/or the College as being designated for a different project. Thus New Hall, the Science Center, and the latest edifice on campus, the Health Science/Engineering Building.

* As somewhat of a concession to the Athletic Department, the success of the 2013 basketball team in reaching the Final Four was used as the impetus for approval of funds to improve the Merner seating capacity and dynamics. In the summer of 2013 or 14, the new bleacher seating was installed on the north side, and at both the east and west ends of the court, and seat back chairs were added on the south side, thus creating something of a bowl type arrangement consisting of 1,270 total ground level seats. The 1,150 balcony seats bring the total Hangar seating capacity to 2,420.

As a football guy I am well aware of how much force it requires to knock someone flat on their backs. In basketball, I am always amazed at how little contact so often results in an obliterating knockdown of a defender. FWIW, soccer is much worse. SMH.

And, as an atomic physicist I am well aware that it takes much less force to effect an obliterating knockdown of a 170 pound basketball guard than it does to successfully knockdown a 320 pound football nose tackle in an obliterating manner.
And as this particular study involved a basketball play, we indeed have a situation where it's entirely understandable that the amount of force that was applied to the defender's body was certainly enough to send him reeling, obliteratingly or not. Additionally, we must consider that unlike football where contact may be initiated after only a step or two, the collision in this particular case occurred after the offensive player was able to build speed and force over at least half the length of the basketball court before coming in contact with the defensive player. With that degree of speed and force being brought forth, and introduced into the equation it's not surprising that what might have appeared to be minimal contact resulted in the above referenced obliterating knockdown.   ;)

(Originally posted at 10:10pm CT on 12/23/22):

That was a flop every day of the week and twice on Sunday. The defender had legal guarding position (2feet on the floor, facing his offensive player). There was marginal contact that was not illegal by either player. The reaction by the defender was significantly greater than the actual contact and clearly was intended to deceive the official.

Good call - not an easy one as most officials will not call that in that game situation.

I thought you were a private investigator ...

Almost all of my career was indeed spent working as an investigator. However, for a short time after graduation, I worked in my degree field, specifically in Remote Sensing. Remote Sensing is basically the acquisition and analysis of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object. I specialized in using satellite based sensor technology to gather both emitted and refracted electromagnetic radiation levels from terrestrial, atmospheric, and aquatic ecosystems. After a couple years it got boring, plus it sounded pretty nerdy to people I tried to explaining it to. So, I decided to find something a little more exciting.
Merry Christmas, and thanks for the little present.  :D
