I don't care what they call it, it's not in Chicago. It's perfectly reasonable to refer to it as Concordia (IL) ... as distinguished from Concordia (WI), Concordia (MI), Concordia (NE), Concordia (NY), etc.

Greg - your're pretty much on target on all accounts. However, sadly, but not unexpected, Concordia (NY) (and Concordia OR) have closed in the past few years. :(

Concordia does appear to have adjusted their name for promotional reasons.  I have no problem with that.  Didn't North Park College re-brand to university for similar promotional reasons?

Nope. North Park rebranded from "College" to "University" in 1997 to: a) reflect the fact that it had added several grad programs with stand-alone departments and sizeable enrollments and now offered a doctorate as a terminal degree, which essentially meant that the school met the two traditional American criteria for what constitutes a university (although the undergraduate liberal arts college was and is still the largest academic entity on campus); and b) the two places that were North Park's biggest sources of international students (Scandinavia and South Korea) both have scholastic traditions that more closely hew to the British model, in which a "college" is either a privately-owned high school or a smaller academic unit within a university, with the university being the degree-granting entity. North Park alumni from those countries were complaining that a bachelors degree coming from someplace called a "College" was being given the stink-eye by prospective employers.

Hmm. Didn't know that. Sad to see. So many schools falling like dominoes these days.

Franklin 67
Millikin 65

The Big Blue led most of the way over in Indiana, including by double digits late in the first half, but coughed up the lead late. They fought back from being six points down with less than a minute and a half to go, but then, with the game tied, gave Lynn King of the Grizzlies three bites of the apple in an attempt to win the ballgame underneath the basket, with his third attempt going in for the game-winner. A wasted effort on a night in which the Big Blue shot a sparkling 11-26 (.423) from downtown. They were paced by JT Welch who had 19 (including 4-9 from range), Nate Straughter with 17 (including 4-7 from range), and Chase Travis, who had another big night with a 10 and 13 double-double.

Coe 73
Augustana 62

The Kohawks led from wire to wire in Cedar Rapids, and they kept the lead in double digits for the final twelve minutes of the ballgame. Augie was led by Tyler Knuth, who had 17 and 6, Chase Larson, who added a dozen points, and by Mikey Hamilton's 8 rebounds.

Wheaton 86
Lake Forest 65

It's hard to believe that the Foresters were averaging 92 ppg after their first two outings, because they looked like an absolute trainwreck on offense tonight. And, considering the fact that they don't play any defense (they gave up 114 to Lakeland and 107 to Benedictine in those two games), it's no wonder that this game turned into a rout. But, bad opponent or not, this has to be a real morale boost for a very inexperienced Wheaton squad. Schauer's boys were led by RJ Veliz (22 and 7, plus a 6:3 a:to), Kyle Neibch (20 points, including 6-11 from beyond the arc), Connor Braun (a sterling 14 and 13 double-double in which he went 5-7 from the floor), and Soren Richardson (12 pts).

The CCIW is now 14-5 (.737).

Congrats to Kolden Vanlandingham of NPU as the first CCIW POW for the 2023 season. He averaged 23 and 4.5 over the season's first two games with limited action in game 1.

This may have been answered before, but what's going on with all of the 4:00 and 4:15 Saturday starts? Who wants to go to a game before supper?

Another way of looking at it is that Vanlandingham is currently averaging 1.18 points per minute. That means that, if he was playing the standard-issue 30 minutes per game typical of a starter, he'd be averaging 35.4 ppg right now.

Of course, nobody should expect him to be able to maintain this torrid pace once the NPU schedule gets more difficult (i.e., Friday vs. Wabash and Saturday vs. either Illinois College or Coe).

I kinda liked the 2:00/4:15 double headers last year. It's up to the host school on conference Saturdays if they want to do that or the traditional 5:00/7:15.

I wish Millikin would start games at 2:00 and 4:15. The travel would be easier.

Aurora 69
NCC 57

And it was not as close as the score suggests. Started great; North Central opened the game on a 17-6 run, but then went ice cold and Aurora fought back, leading 33-27 at halftime. The Spartans then proceeded to score the first eight points of the second half and it was pretty much over from there. AU led by as many as 21 before a late 11-0 Cardinal run at least gave the home fans something to cheer about. Ultimately... 4-23 from beyond the arc isn't going to get it done (espcially when Aurora goes 8-18).

Ken Thomas: 15 pts, 5 reb
Brian Johnson: 11 pts
Ethan Helwig: 10 pts, 6 reb

Noah Butler: 17 pts
Josh Holmes: 15 pts
Michael Osborne: 13 pts, 4 ast

Aurora 69
North Central 57

The Cardinals suffered through a clankathon tonight in the airplane hangar, shooting a mere .368 from the field and .174 from range. They did have a double-digit lead early, but it evaporated quickly, and the Spartans were up by as much as 21 in the second half. To their credit, the Cards did hold AU scoreless for about five minutes down the stretch, but because of their own shooting ineptitude were unable to make a sufficient dent in the visitors' lead. Ken Thomas looked good in the early going and ended up leading NCC in scoring with 15, but he came out of the game with 13 and a half minutes to go and never got off the bench again. I'm not sure why; he didn't appear to be hurt. Brian Johnson added 11 and Ethan Helwig contributed 10 and 6 in the losing cause.

Ripon 76
Carthage 71

The mystery of Carthage's unimpressive trip to Pennsylvania deepens. Over a ten-minute stretch in the latter stages of the first half up in Ripon the Red Hawks went on a shocking 29-6 run to turn a three-point Firebirds lead into a 20-point Firebirds deficit. Carthage did manage to claw its way back into the game with second-half runs of 11-0, 6-0, and 9-0 to close within a point at 70-69 with just under two minutes remaining, but from that point on the Firebirds went ice-cold from the field while Ripon took care of business on the boards and at the FT line to close it out. Julian Campbell paced CC in the upset loss with 20 and 8, while Fillip Bulatovic contributed 14 and 6 and AJ Johnson registered 10. Carthage was only 6-28 (.214) from beyond the arc.

UW-Whitewater 86
Carroll 77

I was more impressed by what I saw of Carroll tonight in a loss than I was when I watched them win handily over Greenville last week. Although UWW led the whole way, the Pios fought back after trailing by 16 early and for quite a bit of the game stayed within one or two possessions of one of the best teams in the country. The closest they got was one point at 66-65 following an Eckahelo Simpson layup with 6:50 to go. But they couldn't get over the hump, as the Warhawks pushed out the lead again, and even though the Pios got to within three with a couple minutes and change remaining they got a bit too desperate and took some bad shots, while UWW clamped down on the boards. Still, although they couldn't manage to bridge the talent gap, Carroll played harder and (for most of the game, at least) smarter than the formidable Warhawks. Aaron Wafford paced the Pios with 15, with Kobe Simpson and Justin Steineke (14 apiece) and Jacob Naber (12 and 8) contributing double-digit points as well.

It was an odd night to watch games on the computer, because by now I'm used to almost every school having someone call the game, and yet the only game with PBP and commentary was Aurora @ North Central. The Carthage @ Ripon game didn't even have sound at all; the camera mic was turned off. At least in the Carroll @ UWW game I was able to enjoy hearing some of the older UWW fans spit vinegar at the refs throughout the contest.

After one week of games, ODAC teams are 20-10 in non-conference games. This includes the game between RMC and VWU. Discounting that game the record is 19-9. The only official ODAC contest so far is Bridgewater's win over W&L on Tuesday.
