You may want to double check my information, I've been told that Campbell isn't playing basketball for Carthage due to financial reasons. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think I've ever seen so many "H's" in one name before:Lalhnehpuia Chhakchhuak

LC, as everyone calls him on campus, has been a mainstay of the North Park JV team since he first showed up three years ago, and since he's still practicing with Team Black (the likely JV players) and has not been assigned a varsity number, it appears that he will be a four-year JV guy. He has never set foot on the floor in a varsity game, nor even dressed for one. But I'm well aware that, as a senior, he will undoubtedly dress and perhaps even start on Senior Night.

And, believe me, I dread that moment. Nothing against LC, a guy whom everybody seems to like and respect. A part of me roots for him, because I'm as much of a sucker for the hard-working-underdog story as anybody, and LC is the South Asian basketball version of the protagonist of the film Rudy. But that name ... I wake up some nights in a cold sweat thinking about having to say that name on the air during live action.

That would really be too bad. I liked him a lot when I saw him play. Hopefully with all the NIL money presumably available, someone could help him out.

Received a call earlier today from an old high school friend who read the above post. He is a Dubuque graduate and has been an ardent supporter/booster ever since. He said that, while he doesn't have a tongue twisting name, Dubuque has a GA coach this year whose "playing" career mirrors Mr. Chhakchhuak. His name is Nick Hawn, and he is a 2024 graduate of CCIW member North Central. He advised Nick was a four year member of the JV team who never dressed for a varsity until Senior Night when he both suited up and started. He then evidently scored the second basket of the game causing the bench to erupt in wild celebration. He was removed after about 3 minutes finishing his career with a perfect shooting percentage.

IWU at #16 in the pre-season poll.  Carthage in ORV.

Looking forward to the season.  IWU has a strong group coming back.  I think it will depend on PG play and whether some of IWU's bigs have improved their post play.  I expect Roper to have a huge season. Three point shooting will also still be an issue I would bet, save for Bazzell.

Here comes the season -- exhibition games -- both men and women -- starting this weekend.

Carthage has 3 D2 transfers coming in.

Arnold and Montgomery played a combined 27 minutes last season, so I don't think we're going to see a lot of playing time out of either unless there's an injury, someone transferred out, or, in the immortal words of Herb Brooks, "someone's game goes to 'heck'".

Riley Brooks, on the other hand, played good minutes at NMU and could be just what SteveD needs to replace some of the void left by Fillip Bulatovic.

Looking forward to this season. Carthage returns a lot of pieces. Johnson, Johnson, Nesbitt, Campbell, Sigel, Williams...should be a fun year (just) north of the border.

Now can we do something about those Saturday 4:00 starts??

None of the transfers are on the roster...and neither is Campbell.

But no Freshmen are listed yet either so the transfers will likely appear when the roster is complete. Campbell, though, is a significant loss.

1. IWU (5)
2. Carthage (4)
3. Elmhurst
4. Augustana
5. North Central
6. Carroll
7. Millikin
8. North Park
9. Wheaton IL

Actually, NPU and Millikin are tied for 7th in the poll with 19 points apiece -- which most certainly doesn't make the Vikings feel any happier about it.

Yikes. When is the last time Wheaton was predicted to finish last in the CCIW?

Quote from: robertgoulet on October 28, 2024, 04:04:13 PMYikes. When is the last time Wheaton was predicted to finish last in the CCIW?

Dunno, because the online CCIW archives for MBB don't include preseason polls that far back, but if I had to hazard a guess I'd put my money on the fall of 1992. In 1991-92 Wheaton finished in eighth place for the third season in a row, and the last-place program in 1990-91 and 1991-92 that had cushioned Wheaton's fall, Carroll, had just left the league. Plus, Wheaton's star center Joel Groen graduated in spring 1992.

Of course, second-year head coach Bill Harris started Wheaton's upward climb in 1992-93, leading the Orange and Blue to an 8-6 record and third-place finish in a very balanced CCIW (aside from national runner-up Augie) that season. That 1992-93 Crusaders team was led by Groen's replacement, budding sophomore superstar center Nate Frank; a decent big-man sidekick for Big Nate in P.T. Hopkins; a good three-point threat in Ronn Smith; and an undersized but scrappy point guard by the name of Mike Schauer.

The CCIW MBB coaches poll has always been notorious for its inability to forecast a sudden rise in the standings like that, and it would've been especially true in this case, because the other coaches in the league barely knew Bill Harris at that point and it's highly likely that they greatly underestimated him. The biggest reason why Wheaton made such a rapid progression from doormat to contender in the space of a couple of seasons was that coaching change from Bill Harbeck to Bill Harris, which for Wheaton was like going from a horse and buggy to Doc Brown's DeLorean in terms of coaching quality.

In their initial exhibition game against D1 competition, IWU plays well, going down to DePaul 76-60.  The Titans have another exhibition at Butler coming up shortly.  Looking forward to a great season for IWU.

North Park unveils its new roster this evening down in Carbondale, as the Vikings will take on Southern Illinois in a D1/D3 exhibition at 6 pm. It's the first half of an adventurous preseason slate, as the Vikings will then scrimmage D2 Lewis in Romeoville on Thursday.
