Elmhurst coasted to a routine 66-50 win over Olivet at Faganel. Dom Trellenberg led the way with 26 and 7 for the 'jays, who come level on the infant season at 1-1.

WI Lutheran has four graduate students on its roster and they played well during a lot of minutes during last night's debacle.  I watched the domination in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.  WL shot only 9/18 treys, so the 114 points consisted of far too many easy layups, put backs, and 12-15' jump shots.  NP displayed complete disunity once WL passed half court.

It strikes me that this season's Wis Lutheran team closely resembles last year's Elmhurst team.

How is that? I think only Ocean Johnson and Zapinski were there the whole time. Then they got Pemberton and Mitchell as grad transfers. Even John Ittounas transferred in a year or two ago, right?

Johnson actually went to Loras his freshman year, and Ittounas was at Whitewater and a JUCO his first two years. The resemblance stems from the fact that I think two of Elmhurst's starters last yr were seniors and 3 were 5th yr/grad students. Mitchell, a non-starter was also a grad student. Lots of experience as with this year's Wis Lutheran squad.

Greek Tragedy

OK. Fair enough. Aside from the experience, I didn't think there was a lot of resemblance. I mean, Elmhurst had a lot of transfers come in and I don't think WLC had that. I don't think that happened much, definitely during the Covid era, where a team stuck together for that long without a lot of moving parts.

Friends in the NW advise that tonight's NCC opponent, Whitman, often likes to play zone D. Another obstacle for the Cardinals to overcome. We'll see how they handle it.

Handled it fine.

After giving up a go ahead layup with 6.9 seconds, Terrance Moncrief went coast to coast and hit a layup of his own at the horn for a 73-72 NCC win. (Or so they claim; we had peak #d3problems as the camera guy didn't pan over in time.)

Moncrief: 21 pts, 9 reb, 5 ast
Sean Molloy: 12 pts
Ethan Helwig: 11 pts, 7 reb

Talk about your edge of the seat, hang on every point game, this was it. The game featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes. The Cardinals shot 45.7, 39.1, and 68.8 compared with the Blues 44.6, 42.3, and 68.8 in a game about as statistically close as the score. The Cardinals almost left the game on the line missing 10 FTs as opposed to Whitman's 5 missed charity tosses. Terrance Moncrief has now led NCC in scoring in both of the first two games and tonight he also garnered a team high 9 rebounds to go with his 21 points.

In a prime example of situational irony, viewers didn't get to see Moncrief's winning basket. As lmitzel touched on above, the Whitman camera operator was naturally shooting the home team's basket when they made a layup to go up by one with 6.9 seconds remaining. The ball was quickly inbounded to Terrance who raced up court. However, the camera operator inexplicably didn't start turning the camera toward the NCC end right away and had only gotten the picture to about half court when the announcer yelled "He puts it in!" Heard it, but didn't see it. 😧

Because I'm not sure how well the evening will go for the CCIW, this might be a good time to point out that, at 14-5, the CCIW's non-con winning percentage is a fairly robust .700.  Let's enjoy that while we can.

UWL: .461/.267/.765

NPU was outrebounded by 18.

It's never a good idea to post while angry, so I've deleted my earlier post.

All I'll say is that I'm extremely disappointed thus far by an NPU team that I watched in practice for a month and a half, a team I felt -- still feel, in fact -- is capable of being infinitely better than they've shown thus far. I'm not shocked that they've started 0-2 -- I'm shocked at how they've started 0-2. And it has nothing to do with the level of competition, either, as the Vikings haven't played well enough to compete with teams a lot worse than Wisconsin Lutheran and UW-La Crosse.

With a strange 11 a.m. start time, IWU took down UW Stout in Menominee, 69-57.

For IWU:

Roper finding his stride today 23
Hakim Williams 9
Marko Anderson 8
Bazzell 8
Fridman 7
Funk 7

With both regular PGs in foul trouble in the first half, David Williams got extra minutes today.

IWU shot 37% from the floor, 27% from three, and 67% from the FT line.  Not really stellar.  However, the Titan defense held UW Stout to 26% from the floor and 13% from distance.  Not so stellar was enough this morning.

IWU goes to 3-0 on the year.

Elmhurst toppled Mt. St. Joseph, 69-56, at Faganel. Great balance for the Bainesians, as they finished with five players in low double figures: E.J. Marshall and Sebastian Blachut each had 13, Aidyn Boone had 11 and 7 while Tagen Pearson scored 11 as well, and Dom Trellenberg chipped in with 10. Jaiden Malichi contributed 8 rebounds to lead EU.

Wisconsin Lutheran dropped Wheaton by 15 (I think) at King Arena. Live stats from Wheaton are down, so no final or stats to report.

WLC has started off its season with three wins over three CCIW opponents. I don't remember that ever happening before.
