Mr. Ypsi

Well, I don't know whether it is still baseball season (I'm a Tigers fan; the season usually ends by June!), or whether it is now football season (I'm currently 5-11 on the OAC pick-ems, so football is obviously not my forte!) - but it is obviously silly season on the bball board!

And, much as I love bball, I say hurray!  It is still warm (and the days are still FAIRLY long), and for that I CAN wait for bball season!  While I love bball, going to AND coming home from work in the dark, and scraping ice off my car both times, is something I DON'T eagerly anticipate.

So treasure the silly season - the alternative is a dead board, or snow!  ;D

It'll be a struggle, TBF, but I suppose that someday I can recover from my wounds.

Devildawg, in response to your question... one COULD argue that "since God gave Kent those gifts, wouldn't God want Kent to use them to the best of his ability."  But, as God was the bestower of such gifts, could He (God) not also desire for Kent to NOT use them, if He so desired?

On an entirely different topic (but one we've discussed recently) some current and former UWSP basketball players will be playing in a charity game against the Harlem Ambassadors (I guess they're LIKE the Harlem Globetrotters... but not(?)  ).  It will be a free game and they will be accepting donations for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Greg,
From you? No chance, cash only.

Dennis,
It's more likely that I'd take Greg's credit card than I'd admit to travelling.

Unfortunately I have to interrupt the current discussion with some very sad news.  The Wheaton College community is sad to learn that, former player, Will Landry passed away yesterday.  Our hearts and prayers are with the Landry family.

I believe he couldn't have been more than 25 or so, as he played just a few seasons ago.  It's always a tragedy when a young person passes away.  In a sincere manner, do you know what happened?  Was it an accident or health reasons?

74impala

I do not know any of the details.  Someone close to the program just let me know of his passing.

Just wanted to stop in and introduce myself.  Started lurking about a year ago, but haven't posted yet.  I have to say, though, that in addition to definitely improving my knowledge of D3 bball, you guys are a thoroughly entertaining bunch.

Probably still won't post often as it just isn't my nature, but wanted to give kudos to everyone for a most entertaining off-season.

Oh my, what an imappropriately timed introductory post on my part!  My condolences to the Wheaton community.

I met Will Landry's parents at the Wheaton/Williams game last year, even though Will had graduated the year before.  What wonderful people they are; you could certainly understand where the nice things that everyone had said about Will came from.

It is a tragedy when someone with so much of life ahead of them passes on, but the recent discussion about God's will on this board is now put into a different perspective.  Sometimes God's call is far more difficult than whether or not to play basketball.

On behalf of the Gordon College community, our condolences, best wishes and prayers go out to the Landry family and the Wheaton College community.

Will turned 24 just a few days ago. He graduated in 2004, and stood like right next to me and my brother at our graduation.

Will has to be one of the most tragic young deaths I have ever heard of. He was a math/computer science major with a GPA off the charts, a four year starter for Wheaton, an was active participant in the Wheaton ministry that builds relationships with juvenille offenders at a local detention center through basketball... and just a really nice guy. Totally one of those people who you makes you wonder how much talent can exist in one body.

The Landrys are an incredible sweet couple, who dearly loved the Wheaton basketball program, and have been to more than a few games since Will graduated. They were both avid lurkers here at one point, and loved CCIW Chat and WETN for helping them stay in touch with their son. Mrs. Landry and I first conversed when she sent me a really sweet encouraging email when I just mentioned in passing on Posting Up that I was having a rough time. I've exchanged emails since then, given her big hugs at games, even exchanged cookie recipes. We first met at Will's Senior Night... wow... a night of so much remembering, so much hope.

Such a beautiful, beautiful family, now incomplete. I honestly don't know how people live through things like this without the sufficient grace of Jesus Christ and the hope of heaven. I hope these truths are especially real to them now.

They might still lurk here anyway, but I will let her know, when I send an email to her now, that people have left thoughts here for them. I'm sure they would appreciate hearing from those who knew Will, and/or saw him play.

And if anyone learns details about what happened, the memorial service, etc. I would really appreciate a post or an email. Thanks in advance.

I just want to echo Joe and April's sentiments.  I got to know Will when working Wheaton's basketball camps a few years ago and I had the chance to room with him for one week in the summer.  He was immensely blessed in many walks of life and he used those gifts to the best of his ability.

My condolences and prayers go out to Wheaton College and his family.

I too, want to add my thoughts and prayers for the Landry family, and the Wheaton family.  I know how easy it is to become close to the guys on the team, and can only imagine how difficult this time must be for the Wheaton supporters, coaches, and players.

May God grant all of you the peace that passes all understanding.

Being a Wheaton Basketball Alum, the news of Will Landry's death was sad to hear...I really got to know Will the past two summers working basketball camps at Wheaton and we became good friends. He was a man of God and to know he is with the Lord at this moment gives me peace. My prayers go out to Will's family, Coach Harris, Ferg, Handy and Frank and the Wheaton Basketball Program.
