Hoops fan, I am not sure how many Titan fans will be at Assembly Hall tomorrow, but it will be a pretty large number.  For huge road games within a 3 hour drive or so, I think it is fair to say IWU has a following of 1000+.  I think about the 2nd Round NCAA game at Wash U 3 years ago where 70% or so of the crowd listed at 2190 was in green...and the games at Wheaton every year where about 40% of the crowd of 2500 is rooting for the Titans.   So if you take all of those people and add in the "casual" fan who just wants to see the Titans play the Illini, and if a large % of those people found tickets, I think it is safe to say IWU will have a large contingent there.  Most Titan fans I know have found tickets somehow - many from Illinois season ticket holders, some from ticket brokers.  The group that seems shutout is IWU students...I've heard from many who cannot find tickets.

Every ticket that was available on Ebay and the ticket broker sites (Stubhub.com, etc) is gone.  Yesterday a set of two in the C section (highest section) went for $120/ticket on Ebay.  And you know those aren't Illini fans!  Playing Illinois Wesleyan isn't exactly a real big deal to them...although the fact that this is the Illini's first game since the national title game vs UNC is significant to many.

The game is officially soldout (capacity 16,600), but there will be some Illinois season ticket holders who have not sold or given away their tickets who don't show up.  I'm interested to see how full Assembly Hall will be - I think there will be 15,000 or so.

Wondering what the largest crowd a Division III team has played in front of is?  This might be it.

IWU v Illini was shown as "sold out" even before the 9:00 am opening for individual ticket sales.  And, since IWU got a really small number of tickets primarily for family members of players-- unless an IWU fan holds an Illini season ticket, knows someone with a season ticket willing to give it up, a student with a season ticket will to give it up or bought the few on e-bay or other sites, the choice is to listen to Titan Q on WJBC!

IWU fans attending this game had to "find a way to win"

P.S. - I found a way last night!

The Titans are making the 45 minute drive to Champaign-Urbana this evening for a 6:00pm practice at Assembly Hall.  I asked Coach Trost if he'd have Matt Arnold get on Zach Freeman's shoulders, hand Arnold the tape measure, and point out to the guys that the baskets are 10 feet but I don't think he's going with it.

Old School,

The Red Men name dates back to the time when Carthage was in Illinois and their rivals were the Blue Boys of Illinois College. At least that's how it was explained to me.

5:45 CST - Illini ticket site @ fightingillini.com  -- now showing "a limited number of tickets available" @ $22.50 each (probably section C upper level seating) - these will not last long

It might be it, but it also might not last long.  On Dec. 21, Earlham will play DePauw at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  It has been explained to me that this will be the undercard, with the main event being a game between the Indiana Pacers and (I think) the LA Clippers.  I don't know how big the Fieldhouse is, or how well the Pacers draw, but it should be a pretty good crowd at least for the second half of the EC/DPU game.

Notice the sly boxing reference; I may not keep up with the NBA, but I am not entirely unaware of the Pacers!  ;)

Mr. Ypsi

David,

The Pacers draw pretty well in general, but if the opponent is the pathetic Clippers (often considered the worst run franchise in all of pro sports), I'm sure the 'undercard' was added in hopes of SOMEBODY showing up!

The Earlham-DePauw game may outdraw a game against the Clippers!

Aurora clips Augie at Augie 79-72 in first preseason game.  Although it is preseason it's still a good sign for an Aurora team who will have to find its identity early.  I understand that I'm preaching to the converted but the CCIW is always a conference of tough teams that rebound especially well, which has been a weakness and a weakness to continue to observe as this Aurora team progresses.  Good win for the Spartans in what should be a fun year.

On the train this morning, I was talking with a bunch of big sports fans, one being an Illini grad.  He knows all about Illinois Wesleyan and is concerned that his Orange and Blue might not look too good against the best D3 has to offer.  He is also keenly aware that the Titans have been together for 4 years and will come to play.

It feels funny to say this, but I'm actually a Titan fan this week (or at least until the Wheaton/Wesleyan soccer match on Saturday)!

Any Augie fan have a scoop on the scrimmage against Aurora?  I know Aurora is very good, but I'm surprised at the score, especially at Augie.  I would've guessed they would at least win by a few. ???

Every year I do an IWU/CCIW Preview piece for IWUhoops.com.  Here is the 2005-06 version...

Great press for the Titans in the Trib this morning.

BTW, I think you have to register w/ the Trib online to read this article so I'm not sure if the link will work or not.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

My loyalties remain intact, but there's no reason why I can't wish IWU well under today's circumstances.  I'd love to see that game.

It's hard to know what to expect on the court tonight.  I can picture things getting ugly real quick, and I can also picture the Titans playing very well and hanging around.

The Titans will keep it respectable if...

1) They stay within 5 rebounds of the much bigger Illini - if the Titans get killed on the boards, they'll be in big trouble.

2) They push the pace - the Titans cannot have this be a halfcourt game.  Illinios is way too big.

3) They make Illinois beat them from the perimeter.  Luther Head and Deron Williams are in the NBA...make McBride, Randle, and the new guys make some shots.

4) They shoot well from beyond the arc - Amelianovich, Dauksas, Fisher, Arnold, and the Titans will have to make a bunch of 3's.

Probable starters:

We'll have the game on WJBC this evening with pregame coverage starting at 6:35pm.

There is a "Gametracker" on the Illini website...
