Great job by the Titans for 30 minutes.  Unfortunately, the Illini size took over the last 10 minutes of the game.  If IWU plays this well against DIII opponets, it sounds like we could very well have the special season everyone is expecting.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Mr. Ypsi

FDF,

I THOUGHT I remembered correctly (but I met so MANY posters for the first time); yes we were in line and I was wondering about when Andy Phillips would return.  My name change was at the dictate of sac - who's gonna argue when a HoFer tells you your name is Mr. Ypsi?!

Mr. Ypsi

Congrats to the Titans - what I expected (hoped for)!

Held with them MUCH longer than most expected.  No one expected you could actually win.  Helluva game!

It was a very special evening in Champaign for Illinois Wesleyan.  That game is something I will never forget...to see the Titans on the floor at Assembly Hall with 16,000 people in the stands was really something.

The Titans were down 36-30 at halftime and to be honest, could have been a lot closer.  The Titans just couldn't make their free throws - 7-15 in the 1st Half.  It was clear there were some nerves working.

In the 2nd Half, the Titans started zone after playing man the entire 1st Half and it really seemed to confuse the Illini for a while.  Jason Fisher hit a 3 to tie the game at 41 with 14:38 and then Fisher hit another one to make it 45-44 Illini with 13:23 to go.  That's when the orange and blue (fans, players, coaches) seemed to kind of start wondering what was going on.

The Illini went on a 26-7 run over the next 7 minutes to take control of the game.  During that stretch, IWU post players Steve Schweer and Zach Freeman fouled out.  They just had to use so many fouls early in the game trying to contain Illinois' huge post players that it really hurt in the game overall.  And not having Cory Jones did impact this game just from a standpoint that having that extra post body in there would have bought IWU a little more time.  Zach Freeman was only able to play 22 minutes in the game due to foul trouble.

Overall, I think IWU's MVP was Chris Jones.  Chris battled with the Illini big boys who were 5 and 6 inches taller and 20 to 30 pounds of muscle heavier and did an outstanding job.  He made it very hard for their power forward trio of Warren Carter, Shaun Pruitt, and Marcus Arnold to get position and to score.

Adam Dauksas also had a great game I thought.  He was defended exactly like a CCIW team would defend Dauksas - try to trap and get it out of his hands 30 feet from the basket.  He was under that kind of pressure from Division 1 athletes all evening and really did a nice job.

And Keelan Amelianovich, for the way he was guarded by Illinois, was very good as well.  The Illini actually used Dee Brown on Amelianovich for stretches to get right in his face and stop him from getting shots off.

IWU did the CCIW and Division III proud this evening.  The Illinois people, including Bruce Weber and Dee Brown, were extremely complimentary to how talented IWU is and how hard they played.  It was a great evening.

North Park will be scrimmaging against the same two opponents whom they've met over the past few preseasons: Wisconsin-Whitewater and Dominican. The Vikings take on UWW in the crackerbox next Tuesday afternoon at 3:30, and then they'll face Dominican in River Forest on Saturday the 12th at 9 am.

The scrimmage against UWW should prove to be a good early indication of where the Viking program is after the 2004-05 disaster. In last year's scrimmage up in Whitewater, the Warhawks won both halves by about 20 points each, and one of the NPU coaches described the Vikings as looking like "a deer caught in the headlights". Scrimmage or not, it presaged just how bad the Vikes were going to be.

UWW is picked to finish 2nd in the WIAC this season in their conference SID poll. Low-post superstud Scooby Griffin is gone, but All-WIAC honorees Jeremy Manchester and Melvin Williams return for the Warhawks. They'll give the Park all they can handle, and then some.

I'm not expecting too much from the Vikings, especially given that it's only preseason and we're talking about a newbie-dominated NPU team that's not 100% healthy. But I won't be peeking through my fingers and gulping down antacids the way I would've last season.

Greg, didn't you say that Craig Anderson was a Covie? It looks he has returned to Whitewater this year.  That adds a modicum of sideshow interest to Tuesday's scrimmage.  Also, what has come of Corey Wilks? Was he part of the Viking purge at the end of last season, or is he still in the mix?

And congratulations on what sounds like a very impressive showing in Champaign by the Titans.  It sounds like Titans the Illini knew to key on were still able to do the things they do.  Q or anyone else who was there  -  any sense, in the end, of how many Titan fans were in attendance?

Yes, Covie (and attendee of Dennis Prikkel's church, in fact) Craig Anderson will be making his first appearance as a Warhawk in the gym that he almost ended up calling home after transferring from Youngstown State. I'm curious to see how well he performs.

Corey Wilks didn't come back to the Park this year, and it doesn't appear that there was a lot of lamentation around the program regarding his loss. His game regressed from his freshman to sophomore seasons, to the point where he was basically told that the team would go in a different direction at point guard in 2005-06.
