I have a question. I haven't been to very many games, and the ones I did go to I can't remember what was going on during the free throws. Are you all implying that while the visiting team is shooting free throws, everyone in the gym sits there quietly and never says a word? That is how we used to play when I was in high school, but I can't remember the last time I saw a quiet gym during free throws.  I do remember a story about one of the gyms. There is a stage behind one of the baskets. When the home team is shooting baskets at that end, the curtian in closed. When the away team gets that basket, the curtain magically opens and the stage fills up with students. I'm sure they all sit there quietly during free throws. Are all you guys saying that the only one in the entire CCIW talking during free throws is Coach G?

Dennis, I think you start this whole "Coach G is a jerk" thing evey year about this time. Judging from some of the things I've seen you post here, I'm kind of surprised to seeing you throwing stones.  :P

Pat, is there any chance that you could provide a banner each year at around this time saying "Coach G is a jerk, and he yells during free throws."  That way it would save everybody time and effort of having to post and argue that point.  I've been reading the same posts for at least the last four years.

Build a bridge and get over it.

For the 2 or 3 posts about where the EC students were-

First, Elmhurst started their semester today the day after the game. Before this they were in Jay term which a lot of students opt not to take, therefore were still coming back to campus yesterday. Outside of the following of a select group of students, (i.e. the 3 rows of students who stood the whole game and cheered). It is just some social event that the others really don't seem to get involved in. When we travel to other schools their whole student section chants when about a third of ours chants at our place. Plus EC is mostly a commuter school. I think 2/3 of enrollment are commuters. Even their next home game when they are in session, EC students probably won't fill their section. Last year when our team was making a good run at the end of the year the students weren't there then, I guess why should things change? Truthfully it's sad to see.     :(   With only two home games left I don't think much will change.

Giovanni's team is undefeated.  He has the power, he has the ego, he can yell whenever, he can stomp whenever.

He has the full backing of the Augie crowd while screaming during free throws.

The man is Almighty!!

Leave him alone!

Armywife---there is a HUGE difference between fans yelling during ft's and coaches.

I saw this in person here in Holland last year, I sort of brushed off all the talk on here about Giovanni as just fans looking through shaded glasses.  But the truth is he does it and it is poor behavior and not professional.

I'll add that at least he does it when his kids shoot ft's as well.  Perhaps he just doesn't realize he's doing it but he does.  All the other stuff is just an intense coach.......we have our share of those in Michigan too.

Just the best way to combat smack talk, with pure deification.

Any good coach uses the dead ball time during both teams free throw attempts as his extra timeouts during the game to instruct his players on what he needs them to execute.  With that said,  " if " it looks or appears like he is excessively yelling while his opponents are shooting FT's,  that would render him semi-bush league in his behavior which has nothing to do with his ability to coach.

And this is an example of how not to counter smack.

...i think his effort is great.  He simply lets the game come to him and it just looks easy for him.  There are players who are go go go go all the time and there are players who are smooth and allow the game come to them.

I totally agree with you regarding Chris Martin's effort.  He is a smart and extremely talented player, and he knows that when he is double-teamed, as he was virtually every time he touched the ball vs. Augie, one of his teammates will be open.  I also take offense to the fact that Martin "has not played well in big games."  Let's get serious.  Two out of the three biggest games of the years he has played unbelievably (one being vs. IWU in which he single-handedly took over at the end of the game while having the stomach flu and one being @ NCC where he put up a mere 29 points and hit a clutch 3 to ice the game).  But that's ok, when Martin has a bad game it is due to lack of effort, however when KA and Harrigan play poorly it's totally to blame on opposing teams playing good D... no fault to them at all.

Dennis- I wasn't around to see the size of the crowds then. I'll take your word they were good size, I guess I just wonder why we don't have the same support as we did a few years ago from the students.

I was at Elmhurst between 1998-2002 and the mascot during Knuppel's glory year.  We had a decent student turnout 80% of the time.  I know Jterm is slow and half the campus is away, but we still had a good crowd.
For some reason ( and I don't have the answer), our fans are fair weather fans, that only come out of the closets when the team is close to winning something big.  Very sad, but very true spoken from a die hard Alum.
Look at NPU, We were up by 20 something and they haven't had great teams of late, but they have a nice student section most of the time.

Looks like the new Top 25 poll is out....

#5 Augustana  (they received 1 1st place vote and were 2 points shy of #4 Hope)

#8 IWU

#14 North Central  (2 points ahead of WPI)

#27 Elmhurst  (10 points out of 25th)

Johnny Augie

The CCIW has pretty good representation in the Top 25.  As an Augie fan, it is great to see Augie in the Top 5.

iwumichigander

Nine (9) straight weeks with three (3) CCIW teams in the Top 25

Six (6) straight weeks (#s 4 - 9) with at least one CCIW team recieving votes.

Four (4) straight weeks (#s 6 - 9) with two CCIW teams in Top 10

For a conference, it just does not get much better than this!  A team goes from good to great when it gets challenged every time it steps on the court.  And not on any given night but on every night CCIW teams have stepped up and challenged the leaders.
All the CCIW coaches and players deserve a round of applause :o
