Actually there are only 18 players according to the CCIW program listing players as All-conference all four years in CCIW ball.

Those honored four years with only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team recognition:  Chris Martin, Drew Carsten, Jason Wiertel, Corey Coons........Grant, Lira, Sikma (Jack), Yess, Pierce, Warden, Thomas (Mike), Johnson and Schaffer.

Those who were honored four years (with at least one year honorable mention): Shaw, Horst, Lotchin, Greer, and Post.

As for those on the first team this year.....this is Martin's fourth year as an All-Conference selection, Third for Amelianovich, Dauksas, and two years of recognition for Harrigan and Simmons.

If I may add a personal comment:

1.         If there was any injustice in the line-up, Dauksas not being an anonymous  pick is beyond unbelievable.

2.         I remain opposed to the coach of the year and the MOP going to the conference champions, just because they are conference champions.  Its as if everyone wants everything to be on "automatic".  If a good discussion occurred as to whom would receive these awards, great-----I am satisfied.  If not, I remain disillusioned by the lack of respect to the honorees that such lack of consideration would imply.  (I am not saying that I am disappointed with the selection.  There are good causes for these selections, but I would hope that the decision were arrived at by discerning discussions.)  This comment is not intended to detract from the selections.  To them a special congratulations on the deserved recognition.

Congratulations.

*If I have left out anyone on the listing, I send my regrets.

In the words of Emily Latella...its "unanimous" pick, not anonymous ....so  "Nevermind!"

Mr. Ypsi

If COY is AUTOMATICALLY the coach of the champion, I agree that that is silly - we already know who won the hardware, but who did the best job?  (USUALLY it would be the title winner anyway, but to make it automatic destroys the value of the award, IMO).

The MOP, I'm pretty sure, does NOT go automatically to a player from the winning team, though it is understandable why it USUALLY would.  With due respect to Harrigan (a deserving candidate/winner), I would have voted for Simmons.  Without Harrigan, Augie would have struggled to place 4th; without Simmons, tournament champion NCC might well have finished 7th.

WONC will have live coverage from St. Paul beginning at 6:40pm with the Cardinal Chase for the Championship pre-game show. Tip-off at 7. The link is www.wonc.org.

P.S. I'm not too pleased with the NCAA about all the traveling I personally have to do now, but it's exciting to cover a tourney team so I won't complain (too much anyway).

Congrats to Tony Bollier and Jordan Kemper for their being named to the 2nd and 3rd all-conference team.  It was quite a year for Wheaton and we saw some great leadership in Tony and some over-the-top performance from Kemper.

Late nite

I have seen a lot of Augie games this year---Harrigan has had a terrific year and earned all the accolades that he has gotten, but the Vikings are no different than any other very good team---They are more potent when they get multiple contributions---The struggles of late have been because they have not gotten the production from other starters or the bench that they were getting earlier this season---I agree that Harrigan is their leader, but they must have some others step up if they hope to advance in the tournament

Some may argue that Carroll could be the #2 team in the nation.

Though IWU is coming from the mighty CCIW and Carroll hails from the small MWC, don't underestimate them.  The top two MWC teams are definitely legit.  :-[

They lost three games to Lawrence by a combined 12 points (or so) and the only other loss was to Oshkosh...by one.  I'm hoping for a IWU win since Carroll knows how to beat Whitewater (beat them earlier in the year).

I have ordered my Whitewater regional tickets and I hope to meet the likes of Titan Q and other IWU posters.  You can shake the hands that have held the last two national championship plaques! lol  ;D  Former coach Jack Bennett will also be in attendence.

While I don't think that the coach of the champion should automatically get it (i.e. not looking at all the circumstances), in the CCIW this year, I think Coach Giovanine deserved it.  IWU was heads and shoulders the favorite not only for the conference, but the National Championship before this season... and for GG to get his team to play in a way to not only win the league but to run away with it the way that he did is really remarkable.  Because especially on a team like Augie, who prides themself with defense, that's gotta be coached.

But I see your point... should the coach who has the stacked team, who was favored by everyone, and who's team goes ahead and wins the conference get the COY?  I guess that depends on the other situations... has a perrenial dormat made a run and missed a piece of the championship by one game?  ... actually, that's the only situation I can think of where a coach other than the Championship coach would ge it, but....

PS,

I agree with you - I'm saying that Grey Giovanine got screwed out of TRUE recognition if the COY goes automatically to the conference winner.  We all know his team won the conference - do his peers think he was the best coach?  (I'd say probably yes, but the award is totally meaningless if it SIMPLY duplicates the standings.)

I'd go with Harrigan as Player of the Year and Raridon as COY. Simmons is a great athlete and will be the odds on favorite to win it next year with all of the other first teamers graduating. I would think that NCC will be the favorite to win the conference next year, as they seem to have the most key players returning. The other first division teams this year, IWU, Augie and Elmhurst, lose some big time competitors, particularly IWU.

Now that the inaugural CCIW Tournament is in the past and the CCIW was able to field 3 teams, what are all of your thoughts about the Tournament idea?  I have always been in favor of it, and I think this year is a great example why I think the Tournament benefits the CCIW.

79JB, would you have been in favor of the tournament if Augie would have beaten Elmhurst in the championship and neither NCC or IWU made the tournament?

Re:  Coach of the year.

I've always felt it was more deserving for a coach to get it if his team was predicted to finish 7th or 8th and he gets them up to, say, 2nd or 3rd, than for a coach who's team is predicted to finish 1st or 2nd and gets that team to finish where they are predicted.  More credit goes to the coach who has less to work with and isn't expected to do anything, IMO.

If IWU treats Carroll like they did the rest of their non-conference (pre-season as Greg Sager likes to call them) opponents....

The only thing I liked about the Carthage/Carroll road trip was the cheese soup at one of the local truck stops.

Quote from: LU 05 on February 28, 2006, 12:19:43 PMI for one do not mind the occassional transfer player, but I think to have as many as they have had goes against the values of the midwest conference and division 3 in general.

That's both arrogant and ridiculous. It doesn't go against the values of D3 at all. There are no rules in D3 that curb the number of transfers a program can have.

Transfers are not lepers. There are any number of reasons why a student switches schools, and to make a blanket statement that they collectively besmirch the academic stature of an institution is outrageous. If a student has the academic credentials and can do the work, there should be no stigma whatsoever attached to that student if he's a transfer, as compared to his peers who attend the same school for all four years.

Quote from: markerickson on February 28, 2006, 10:57:24 AMHow has CCIW-dormat Carroll transformed itself into a winner?

Coaching. Dave Schultz is a dynamite coach. Carroll really struck gold when they hired him to run their men's basketball program.
