Sam Johnson: Try ludicrous. There's no law that says a private college can't have both "world class academics" and adequate athletic facilities. I could name you quite a few that have both.

Greg: I imagine my comments about LU's gym might have touched a raw nerve as NPU has the same problem.

Late Nite: "One game away from the Final 4" = Elite Eight.

I find this to be ludacris.

Thanks all who pointed this out.  I did indeed find the discussion to be "rap-tastic".  ;)

I really kill the world class academic thing when I pull out an error like that.  I blame the 2am posting time.  :)

You can squeeze 1,100 into the crackerbox if the temporary endline bleachers, which haven't been used since Bosko left (gee, I wonder why), are brought back out. Alexander can, and has, actually held about 1,400. The reason why capacity (and thus ticket sales) are listed 300 seats lower than that for this coming weekend's sectional is because of the Appleton fire marshal's restrictions, as Q said earlier.

Slight correction here Greg, during the "Rob Berki era" at NPU, the stage bleachers were regularly used for conference games. I remember this vividly because at one point a Carthage female fan wearing not much more than a sports bra in the endline stands yelled at me while on the free throw line: "fat AND bald...what a combination!" I couldn't help but laugh while shooting, I'd never been that accurately insulted.

I think the old places have a certain charm.  Alexander sure seems to.  Why change if the facilities fit the needs.

Chicago's old arena had seats on just one side.  The new facility is nice, but there are parts of the old one that I missed.  North Central's gym is old and often criticized, but it too holds it's own uniqueness that would be missed with a new facility.

Mugsy: Remember that it's the other Michigan IWU fan, Mr. Ypsi, who is the certified statistician. If he had made the typo error, it would have been inexcusable.
Old School: No, the U. of I. couldn't draw 60,000 fans to Memorial Stadium unless it was an April celebration...
Diehardfan is back in the good graces of the CCIW faithful now?  That's cause for celebration! lol.  ;D :P
Lol... Lanny, Annette, and I have always been good buddies, like many of the 40+ group ;) of IWU fans, they are extremely sweet, kind, and giving people. Though I am still waiting for that IWU-Wheaton game tape to appear.:'( :D  If IWU makes it to the Final Four this year, I owe them at least one meal for disappearing on them after the Wooster game two years ago, and then standing them up before the NCC game last year. :o

Lol... that's when it is started! :D Actually though, for most Wheaties, it's done at 8am on Saturday, and during all sporting events. ???

diehardfan,

Glad to see you're back to your old self.  Although the picture is gone; the limit of online pick up lines must have been reached.

I haven't been on line for a while, but want to congratulate IWU and Augie on an outstanding start to the NCAA tourney.  They are holding the banner high that the competition in the CCIW is as we have said all year strong and worthy!  It is a real shame that should the two could win their next game, and I am not prejudging either game, and that the way the brackets are set we could not have been challenged in brackets that don't meet before Salem.  But, We take what we are given and do the best with what is on our plate.

I would suspect that the rest of the league feels the same as many of the Elmhurst crowd does..........Go Augie,   and has hard as the rivalry is.....Go IWU.

I do hope that both the IWU crowd and the Augie crowd cough up the dollars to see both games this weekend.  After all, we are at this time of year---family.  And what's the price of another ticket when we are talking family.  (If I could get there, I would buy two tickets myself!)

When we fight amongst ourselves we are each others worst enemy.  When someone comes a beating on our door, we are the best of brothers and sisters and support each other.  Such is the case here.

So, although I am not a spokesperson for all of Elmhurst, good luck to the CCIW's best:  Agustana and Illinois Wesleyan.....I shall wear Green, and the Blue and gold this weekend as I listen to what should be two fantastic games, God willing!

Good luck, gents!

Check out the track record of UPS the past two years and you'll see a great program
LN -  Third year straight year in the sectional round for UPS; still looking for a win at this level, but know we have quite a challenge this year as well.  On the bright side for Augie fans, the team to eliminate the Loggers the past two seasons has won the national championship.  Damn that UWSP! :P

Should be a great game, wish I could make it out.

UPS lost a great player in Jeremy Cross from last year.  They could have been a lot more intimidating than they already are.

Loggerville,

Conversely, on the bright side for Logger fans, Augie's played in eight previous D3 tournaments and have been eliminated by the eventual champion six times!

How about Illinois Wesleyan???  I have utmost respect for Lawrence University, but they are certainly not in a different class than IWU academically.  Heck, US News has them virtually deadlocked.  I'm not commenting at all on Alex vs. Shirk, just saying that it's certainly possible to focus on both academics and athletics.

It certainly is, and my post was not meant to demean IWU's academics.  But in the last 10-15 years LU has engaged in several substantial building projects including a new social sciences hall, a new science hall, completely renovating the old science hall, completely remodeling the interior of the library, completely remodeling the interior of Main Hall (the original building of the University), a new art center, and a new suite style dormitory.  The majority of these (including the largest, most expensive) projects were completed in the last 5-7 years.  At the same time LU's endowement was struggling.  Thus, the priority of the University has not been on athletic facilities.

I don't believe the way our previous administration (through 2004) handled the funding of the athletic dept was appropriate...we may not have been able to afford major renovations, but smaller improvements could/should have been made.  That aside, I still find it absurd that anyone could insinuate (especially lacking knowledge of LU's building history and financial situation) that they are automatically remiss for not improving the athletic facilities.

I'm glad institutions like IWU, Hope, Illiniois College, Monmouth College, etc are able to improve their facilities.  I hope (and as an alum will continue to demand) that the same attention be given at LU.  But I also realize that my school has faced other realities that impacted athletics.  Not having a renovated gym is not automatically a sign of lack of commitment to athletics, its often a sign of a different set of current priorities/needs.
