Wesleyan and Augie's roster is the best of Illinois that didn't go to Division I schools; they're at those two schools," Lawrence coach John Tharp said.

A lot of names come to mind of Illinois natives that aren't on IWU's or Augie's rosters...

Chris Martin, Elmhurst
Anthony Simmons, North Central
Jabari Saunders, St. Xavier
etc

Then there are the D2 stars at Lewis, Quincy, SIU-E.....

A little hyperbole from coach Tharp there!

I love how coaches talk about the opponents before games.  Our HS football coach used to talk up a conference foe that hadn't had a winning record in 5 years (while we were the back-to-back MN State Title holders) like they were USC...hyperbole is the name of the game as a coach.  :D

i had been away since North Central's exit last week...but all this talk about bosses and teachers not knowing how long it takes to do projects is great. I agree. at a job i held during the summertime while i was in college, i would work MAYBE 2 hours total during the day.....my boss wasn't computer literate, so he figured things i had to do for him would take WEEKS when they actually only took a few hours. i kept a running talley of my solitaire scores and also started to formulate a theory about how the hearts game on computers cheats.

I had the same type summer internship.  Except my game was freecell and I played that all day long.  Too bad I didn't know about this site back then.  I would be an All-American, not just a starter!

That reminds me, how long until I move to All-Conference?  ???  Anyone? Bueller?  :D

Nice story out of Appleton, Bob.

I'd like to see Wesleyan play Lawrence at the top of their game - just leave the memories of those 2 Wheaton games in the dust.  Oh, and as a matter of fact, Augie fans should do the same! (wow, does it feel good to say THAT!)  ;)

I said this year, because all the top teams in d3 were beating the top teams in NAIA this year.  Just from the scores reported it seems like we had a good year.  Sager pointed out that it hasn't always been this good, but for one year, d3 seems to have the upper hand.  I did hope I clarified, that the NAIA schools would not compete for a title in d3.  They do have good, solid programs, but this year, they aren't up to the level of the top five or ten programs in d3.  I'm not trying to be offensive with that statement (I did that with others earlier on).

I don't know if anyone has compiled the stats from earlier years (and the stats reported were only from NAIA-2, not NAIA-1), but from the first pages of the d3 vs. everybody thread I found:

2001-02: d3 118, NAIA-2 58
2002-03: d3 92, NAIA-2 60
2003-04: d3 93, NAIA-2 62
2004-05: d3 67, NAIA-2 70 (d3 16, NAIA-1 22)
2005-06: d3 119, NAIA-2 118 (d3 22, NAIA 31)

Two things strike me:

(1) the d3 dominance over NAIA-2 slipped a bit from 2001 thru  (winter)2004, but crashed and burned after that.

(2) why a sudden increase of 100(!) games between 2004-05 and 2005-06?  [My speculation - the record-keeping may have improved dramatically.]

If anyone can fill in the d3 vs NAIA-1 records, or records for either pre-dating 2001, it would be greatly appreciated!  (Though the d3 vs. everybody board would be the more appropriate place to do it.)

Actually none of this ever happened or even exists.  This is all an elaborate plot being executed by a disgruntled former student.    :o

Congrats to the Josten winners.  Wonderful college careers on and off the court for both of them.

Yes, time to clamp down on Mr. Josten this weekend.  :)

Quick report from Appleton:
1) The burgers at the Wooden Nickel in downtown Appleton are as good as Schooners'.

2) The floor at Alexander is good, the lighting fair, and the chandeliers are small and unimpressive.

3) When I walked in and saw the "end zone" bleachers for the first time, I thought I was in a movie set for "Chariots of Fire." I don't know where LU got them, but they have to be at least 50 years old. Wooden and the scafolding (sp?) is very thin. I assume they will support a lot of weight but I wouldn't bet on it.

4) The parking is nonexistent except for maybe 30 unreserved parallel spaces. I can't understand why LU doesn't simply pave the grass area that surrounds the circle driveway that leads to and out of Alexander. I guess LU likes to get their money's worth out of their maintenance crews to mow the grass.

5) Appleton is a neat town with a lot of big old homes. I assume it's a fairly wealthy city.

6) My prediction is that Keelan A'ovich is going to have a monster game vs. LU.

7) If Wessels doesn't play, and the latest is that he won't, I agree with Titan Q that Augie will be at a big disadvantage. That's a big blow for Augie, but they do have some depth at guard. Hope Kolze is on the travelling team as I think he will be needed.
