We used to go to Principia each year for a dual track meet.  As Dennis said, it is truly a beautiful campus.  They also used to host a fine international relations conference for mid-western schools (pol sci majors).

On one visit my roommate (a high jumper) had a headache and wanted aspirin.  We somehow didn't have any, so he went and asked their coach--obviously unaware of medical practices among Christian Scientists.  He did not succeed in getting medication, but the coach did recommend meditation.  And, their white pew chapel high above the river was a picturesque spot for meditation.

It was also interesting to observe license plates in the student lots.  Just about every state was represented.  And, I do remember throwing the javelin in competition with one Californian--Jody McRae, the son of western movie star Joel McRae.

Please don't remind me there were only 48 states at the time.

But there was a bright golden haze on the track.

We did play soccer at Principia one year and it was interesting to see that they had no training room, no ice for injuries on the bench.  I had to ask for ice in some drinking water which we used later for ice.  I was worried about what would happen if we had an injury, but we did not.  They did and the coach went out onto the field and with several players, prayed over the fallen player.  He got up and continued but you could tell that he was really hurting.  While I don't agree with Christian Science, you had to admire the fact that they really did practice what they preached.

The other thing that I remember about that game was the fact that their coach had one eye.  That is to say, one eyeball.  He did not have a glass eye.  When I had met him in other settings off their campus he always wore a modified patch over his eye, but while on campus he did not wear anything over it.  It was very hard to carry on a conversation with him, without feeling like you were staring at the empty socket.

I will concur with Dennis that their campus is one of the most spectacular I have ever seen and the town (?) of Elsah is beautiful as well.

Joe --

At a football game against Carthage, at Carthage (Illinois), a Principia player suffered a broken leg.  He was taken to the Carthage Hospital where a physician set the leg.

Evidently they did use medical treatment for situations such as fracture.  I do not know what follow-up treatment (if any) was administered.

Now you've got me wondering whether one of the tenets of the Christian Science sect is a ban on prosthetic devices.  ;) I suppose, though, that a glass eye could in a religious sense be considered more of a cosmetic bauble than a prosthetic device in that it's strictly for show (i.e., vanity) rather than biomechanical function.

It's hard to imagine even Christian Scientists having a problem with setting a leg.  The real question would be if they allowed x-rays or pain medication for the kid.

I had a scoutmaster who was missing an eye due to a japanese bayonet.  He had a glass eye but almost never put it in because it was uncomfortable and he didn't wear a patch, he kind of looked like Popeye without the forearms.

Greg,

The question about protheses occured to me as well, but I couldn't think of an appropriate way to ask about it.  Some of our guys picked up literature on Christian Science beliefs and it made for some entertaining discussion on the way home from Elsah.

There was an outbreak of measles on Principia's campus the next year and they had to quarantine the campus because they would not allow innoculations.

emeritusprof

A quarantine wouldn't be difficult, since the place was practically quarantined perpetually.  If a guy wanted to take a date off campus he had to be accompanied by a faculty or staff chaparone.  And, the entrance was properly protected by a 24-hour guard house.

I have no idea whether any of those things remains, but it was kind of fun recalling old experiences.

Okay....Okay....I will ask and bne the "straight guy" for this one.

What was the plastic cone used for?  What was its purpose?

Couldn't help but it was one of those questions that is begged to be asked!

Wheaton's 06-07 Sched is up:

http://www.wheaton.edu/Athletics/mbasketball/index.html

Uhm, yeah.  :-\

We're only playing 4 non-conference in region games.. and that's only if we end up matching up with Franklin in the Pfund.

Stout's schedule is out and from what I gather, they only play ONE non-conference in-region game.  Finlandia is a provisional member and when they played Eau Claire three times last year, none of those games were in-region, so I'm guessing their game against Stout isn't in-region either (though their status might be different last year).  I'm sure the Northland game is, but I have no idea where Jamestown is.  Bemidji State, Northern Michigan and Viterbo are all non-D3 schools...and of course, Wisconsin isn't either!  Of the nine possible nonconference games Stout can schedule, only one is in-region (not sure about Finlandia) and no idea who they play out in Vegas.

The 2006-2007 Schedule for the Stout Blue Devils is already up!!! Wahoo!  It's time to pick apart and analyze! lol.  ::)

They get to play Wisconsin this year!

Other nonconference games:
at Bemidji State
at Northland College
at Northern Michigan
at Finlandia

2 games at the D3 Desert Shootout
Stout Holiday Tourney
Jamestown College
Viterbo (North Central is also in the tourney but not in winner vs. winner format)
Wow, only two nonconference home games (6 away/neutral)

Mr. Ypsi

The Jamestown Jimmies (of course - how original!) are an NAIA II team from Jamestown, ND.  Beyond that, I know NOTHING about them (except that Ypsilanti, ND, is only 10 miles away ;D).

And, yes, Ypsi, ND, was named by settlers from MY Ypsi. :P  Only a few miles away, you will also find Adrian and Grand Rapids - quite a number of Michiganders settled in SE ND after the Civil War.

Mr. Ypsi

dennis,

You no doubt explained it somewhere in the previous 368 pages(!), but I've forgotten, if so.  What does MW stand for?

BTW, we finished 3rd in the country AGAIN - what's it gonna take to get you back to 'green with envy'?? ;)

Dennis, the white plastic cup on top of the vehicle seemed quite unusual to me.    Unfamiliar with the religious tradition of Principia , other than many of the perceptions some of which may or may not be accurate, conjured up many situations which truly made me chuckle.......sorry for any disrespect but one in my mind wss......"If you hit the car with the plastic cup on it, use the holy water in side" rather than repair!

Sorry that my mind went strangely awry, please excuse me.

Ypsi,

I think that it is "Meaningless Words," but I'm not sure.
