I graduated over 4.0 as well, but its this 5.1 business that's making me laugh.  They added the extra possible point for honors classes, so what's up with the extra, extra point?  I mean if this continues are we going to see kids graduating with 9.456 gpa?  Will it mean anything anymore (not that it means too much now)?

Hoops Fan- some schools are on a 5-point scale. For example, at my high school, an A was worth a 5, and an A in an honors class was worth a 6. I had no idea until I went to college that at most other schools there was a 4-point system. This was over 10 years ago so I don't think it is anything new.

I don't think that Brooke Shields is much of an ideal comparison for hitting a baseball no matter what her age.

Now if you had said Tawny Kitaen, that might have been a different story.

No, he said hitting a baseball; not hitting a baseball player. ;D

I'm glad someone got the reference.  I always wonder just how obscure I can get before I look foolish.  I knew there had to be at least one Indians fan on here who would know what I was talking about.

Hoops fan, I got an extra grade point for taking honors classes in the 1960's.  I graduated with a 4.17 out of a possible 4.17.  The Salutatorian in my class who went to MIT had a 4.53 out of a possible 4.53.  Nothing new.  My high school honors classes helped me place out of 40 hours of College Class credit. I did not have to take College English! ;)

In fact, my nephew took freshman college English at the local junior college as a substitute for the Senior High School English.

I was glad I never took HS honors classes.  In my HS the honors students were the ones that ended up with a combined 850 on their SAT's.  They were great regurgitators of facts but couldn't think for themselves and couldn't think out side of a box.  This was the majority, there were some that were extremely bright but overall the honors students were doofususususus's.  I was ranked 226th out of 268 students in my class but seventh in SAT score and in the top ten percentile my senior year in the nation.  I slept through half of high school, something about relearning things I learned in elementary school and Jr. HS being a waste of my time.  Yes I had a bad attitude.

We were graded on a 0-100 number scale, A=92-100, B 84-91 etc.

Actually, Hoops Fan, I'm a Cub fan. Interestingly though, Chuck Finley has a Quad-Cities (where I'm from...or is it "from where I'm"?) connection. The California Angels called him up directly from our Class A team in 1986, which was pretty unusual.

Being the resident Cleveland fan, I got it too, HF.  I laughed, and I may have given you a karma point as well, but I didn't comment since there was no chance I could improve the joke.   :)

Trivia: the Cleveland Professional Baseball Club traded this particular problem to the Cardinals in 2002 for minor leaguer Luis Garcia and the ever-popular "player-to-be-named-later."  That player turned out to be current Red Sox heartthrob Coco Crisp.

Just an addendum on the over 4.0 (or over 5.0) question - there are also schools which recognize an A+ grade, assigning 4.3 (or 5.3) points.  (Whether or not any schools use both - so that at a 5.0 school someone could conceivably graduate with a 6.3 GPA! - I do not know.)

Titan Q

Scott Trost will be on WJBC's Sportstalk tonight at 7:40 Central...

Trost looked like his head was going to pop off during the forst half of both games at the regional in Appleton.   I thought he was going to have a coronary.

I am still surprised at the move by Trost.  He did well at Wesleyan and I thought was poised to take this year's group of young players to another strong 4 year run.

How many scholarships can a D2 program give out for basketball?  Obviously this feature will help Trost in recruiting the Chicagoland area - the buzz will soon be out that there is a good D1 alternative in the area and I think we'll see some good names showing up in Romeoville.

The D-II basketball scholarship limit is 10.

Sad to see Scott Trost leave IWU, but happy for him for numerous reasons I won't elaborate on. IWU will always have a very good basketball coach, but, IMHO, will not find a coach any better than Trost.  I'm sure  that a national search will reveal many interested coaches, some of whom will be suprising and, in some respects, overqualified. The basketball job at IWU is better than most D2 jobs and quite a few D1 jobs considering all aspects.  For a school like IWU, a national search for a job is no big deal. I still think that there is a decent chance that the next coach could be an IWU grad with a local connection, or least an IL connection. And I imagine the next coach will be named in less than 3 weeks. Just my guess as I have no clue on the time frame.

Pat Coleman

I am sure there are personal reasons why Trost made this decision.

I'm also similarly sure they aren't things that should be speculated on here.
