That translation is hilarious! I'm still trying to figure out what word could possibly be translated as 'eaves', since no English word would seem to fit both of the usages. And by what bizarre mechanism does 'team' become 'equipment'?! (But congratulations to Adam on his apparently successful sex-change operation!)

If you go back to Ye Olde English................ Eaves is a possible translation for graduate.

Well, I don't really know, but "equipe" (accent over the first e) is how you would say "team" in French. Obviously there has to be some sensical etymology somewhere, but I will leave that to some really bored person to look up.

I don't regret studying French at all, leaves that random vague hope I have of getting involved in UN politics open... but I do definitely plan on studying Spanish once my in-state residency kicks in this fall, so that I can be one of the cool people who don't require the translation headsets at all the US-Mexico border meetings I attend for work. 8)

Indeed, Spanish for team is equipo.

Also, April, you could work in Quebec.

Alero is the word for eaves -- alternate translation is mudflap, I kid you not.

In context he is described as an alero tirador -- tirador is shooter. Could be outside shooter, but from googling the phrase and having seen Amelianovich play, I wonder if it's a term for "swingman."

The translation to 'eaves' occurred twice: (both are) 'eaves of the University of Illinois Wesleyan' and (Keelan) 'is eaves gunner'.... Both ARE guards - might that be the commonality? (While Adam probably COULD be a swingman, he never has been.) I may be stretching a bit, but eaves do 'guard' the house from rain damage.

These automated translation programs can come up with as hilarious outcomes as students relying solely on spellcheck without proofreading their papers! My personal favorite: the student who wrote that 'juvenile records are atomicly expunged when they reach 18' (I responded: My God, have they never heard of paper shredders?!) Either that or the student who wrote 'women and their male contraband' - from the context it was clear she meant 'counterparts' (I responded: Ah yes, my goal in life is to be Elle McPherson's contraband

).

The translation says "Base and eaves" -- Dauksas is the base and Amelianovich the eaves.

Since homes in Spain have their roofs coming down in front rather than the side as we do in the US, the eaves are in front of the house, therefore they are "forward." and hence KA's designation as an eave.

All the MWC fans will be glad to know that I passed up a chance to do a story on Dauksas and Amelianovich out front that would have given three CCIW stories in a row. The NBA GMs feature story wasn't something I could pass up. Jason Bailey did a great job with it.

I guess that while I was on vacation I missed the memo that the CCIW was skipping November, December, January, and February this coming year so that it could proceed straight into March.

Pat, Chuck takes a beating from you for his obstinate refusal to concede that Jack Sikma wasn't a D3 player, but on the other hand the issue of historical status is something that should be applied with consistency. Randy Pfund should not have been described as a "D3 alumnus" in your front-page tease for Bailey's feature story. Pfund graduated from Wheaton in '74, and he therefore played his entire career under the auspices of the NCAA College Division. The following season, of course, was when the College Division was split into D2 and D3 for the first time.

Still wasn't something I could pass up.

I looked at Wheaton's game-by-game results for that year and decided it worked out well enough considering
a) The NCAA was divided into three divisions in 1973
b) Wheaton played under Division III rules in terms of number of games.

You are right that the first men's basketball championship in Division III was not held unitl 1975. However, the auspices of Division III began before the first men's basketball championship was held.
